The book literally fell apart when I opened it

Fell apart the first time I turned a page

I found this book to be very helpful for my Holidays Around The World unit. It gave key information for Christmas traditions in different countries.

This is a great book to read a few pages at a time in teaching students about how different cultures around the world celebrate Christmas. In my classroom, we enlarged the map from the back of the book so we could velcro icons from each country's celebration to the country on the map.

I was looking for a book to teach my children about how other countries celebrate Christmas. I grew up in Germany, so I started out by reading the section about Christmas in Germany and was very surprised to learn that, according to this book, children in Germany try to listen for Kris Kringle who comes through the window to bring gifts. By the time the kids go to bed on Christmas Eve in Germany, they will have opened their presents that were left behind by "Christkind" (Christ child), since they open their presents on Christmas Eve. There is no "Kris Kringle" in Germany.After reading this, I decided not to even bother trying to use this book for my children - if they got the part about Germany so wrong, I wouldn't trust anything else in this book to be accurate.

I'm about a third of the way through studying this book and it is amazing me with the complexity of the human hearing system. To learn more would require becoming involved in the medical profession. To me, this book was well worth the investment.

"From Sound to Synapse" describes the transformation of sound waves into neural impulses that is performed by the mammalian ear. The story begins with the arrival of sound waves at the external ear and eventually leads to a characterization of the response of primary auditory neurons to speech sounds. Along the way, the basic mechanisms of the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear are discussed, using experimental observations of vertebrate ears and computed results of theoretical models to illustrate the discussion. Geisler's fascination with the mammalian ear is evident in the way he reveals new insights to the reader. His comprehensive overview provides a good theoretical basis for understanding the various processes involved in hearing.The book is written in a style that does not require the reader to have a strong scientific background. For each one, the authors explain what it does from a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective (e.g., strengthens the kidneys, drains dampness) and which health issues you can use it for (e.g., losing weight, or recovering from illness). You can use the index to look for a recipe by ingredient or by health issue. They also give you variations on each recipe. I have even made up my own recipes based on the information/ingredients presented in the book.Ancient Wisdom, Modern Kitchen is written from the perspective that food = nutrition = medicine. You can enjoy it simply as a cookbook of East Asian dishes, or as a component in a healthier lifestyle (the recipes are mostly quite low fat and feature lots of veggies, herbs, and whole grains), or as therapeutic for specific conditions.The only drawback--and this isn't a problem with the book but with trying to eat an Asian-style diet in the USA--is that some of the ingredients can be hard to source and rather expensive. The authors do their best to help by giving you pictures of ingredients that may be unfamiliar, as well as showing their names written in Chinese so you can recognize them from the packaging. I happen to live in a city without a good Asian market though, and have found it difficult to get some of the herbs locally. They can be ordered online, but some (like ginseng) can be really pricey. However, this is your health we're talking about, so it's up to you whether that's worth the cost. Most of the recipes can be made without hard-to-obtain ingredients and they'll still be tasty food, albeit maybe not as medicinal. I am a licensed acupuncturist and practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and I prescribe various recipes from Ancient Wisdom, Modern Kitchen. My patients love the recipes and information as much as I do. Food is medicine, and the first part of the book describes different foods' qualities and healing properties. The pattern differentiation of each recipe reflects the individualized treatment strategies used in Chinese Medicine. The miso tahini green bean recipe is one of my favorite dishes ever, and I make it at least 1-2x/week in the warmer months. I just ordered a few copies for wedding gifts. Yuan Wang and Warren Sheir were 2 of my favorite teachers at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, and having this resource allows their teaching presence to remain in my life.

I have had this book about 3 weeks now and I decided to write a review to encourage people to take a leap and buy it! The recipes are delicious! What I like best are the mineral-rich broths, and that they use the soaking liquids in the recipes. For lunch today, I had Cool-as-a-Cucumber Salad, Terrific Tofu and Mushrooms, Seaweed-Sweet Potato Simmer, and brown rice. I could not get anything that good at any Chinese restaurant I know of. I was fortunate to have Yuan Wang, one of the authors, as one of my teachers. This cookbook is exactly what I would expect from such a great instructor. The directions are very clear. The recipes are quite simple and delicious. As a practitioner of Chinese Medicine, I appreciate the information regarding the properties of each dish. It's very nice to see the Japanese uses, as well. I've made several dishes from this cookbook and all have been delicious and very easy to prepare. I highly recommend this cookbook for the lay person as well as practitioners of Chinese or Japanese style medicine.

I am a practitioner of Chinese medicine who has had long time interest in food therapy. This book, not only presents therapeutic recipes for healing, but they are also very easy to make and tasty! I recommend this book to my patients and they have had nothing but positive remarks! Other Chinese medicine cookbooks in comparison use ingredients that are almost impossible to obtain in the West. These recipes and commentary make cooking in a Chinese manner easy and fun, and above all teach you how to integrate herbs and other tricks to heal your body and soul.

I'm really enjoying this book. The title fits perfectly. You can look up a disease in the back of the book and it will give you the page number for different recipes that help that disease. Easy to read, lists ingredients and directions for cooking. Have fun with the book and on your trip to an Asian market :)

Great book! five plus stars......the only thing more I would want in such a book would be Western equivalents for substitution of any or all foreign food items. I love foreign foods! But realistically if you do not live where they are easily obtained, Western substitutions are necessary to be cost effective and useful. Some are given but more choices would be helpful .....more and bigger pictures too!

This is a book about all that can go wrong with the human body when it’s exposed to the most extreme conditions possible—including places where no human can survive without the benefit of modern technology. The medical science provides plenty of tidbits of fascinating food for thought, but it’s the stories of survival (or, sometimes, the lack thereof)—many of which the author, Kenneth Kamler, M.D., was present for—that make this a gripping non-fiction read.There are only six chapters, addressing survival in the jungle, on the high seas, in the desert, underwater (diving), high in the mountains, and in space. There’s also a prologue that sets up the book with examples from Dr. Kamler’s experiences at high elevation (specifically Mount Everest.) Each chapter is full of illuminating stories about the threats to human life that exist in all of the aforementioned environments. The author is a hand surgeon who made a secondary specialization through expeditions to extreme environments to deal with the maladies that are largely unknown to the average person’s day-to-day existence—from pulmonary edema to exotic Amazonian parasites. A few of the chapters feature mostly stories of Kamler’s own experiences. These include the chapters on the jungle, deep-sea diving, and high altitude climbing. For other chapters Dr. Kamler draws together fascinating cases of survival and perishment in extreme environments such as living in a life raft on the high seas.Besides considering what might kill you in extreme places, this book also reflects upon a couple of other interesting tangential questions. First, what adaptations (cultural or physical/genetic) do the locals have who live at or near these extremes that allow them to live? A fascinating example of this seen in the explanation of how Sherpas of the Himalayas differ from the Andean Indians who live at high elevations in terms of their biological adaptations to elevation. These two peoples living under similar conditions share some common adaptations, but other adaptations are quite different. On a related subject, Kamler also looks at what adaptations other species have developed to allow them to be so much more successful in some extreme environments (e.g. seals in water.)Second, the role that x-factors like belief and will to survive play are never shunted aside as irrelevant anomalies by the author. Kamler devotes an epilogue to the subject of will to survive. Dr. Kamler was at one of the camps above base camp on the day of the 1996 Everest tragedy in which 12 perished. Kamler saw and advised on the treatments of Beck Wethers and other severely frostbitten climbers. Wethers’s story is particularly fascinating as he lay freezing in the snow overnight in a blizzard, apparently snow blind—though it later turned out to be an altitude related problem with an eye surgery (radial keratotomy)—before climbing to his feet and shambling into the wind (his only guide to where the camp might be.) Kamler considers the science of how Wethers neurons might have fired to get him to his feet against what seems like impossible odds, but concedes there’s much we don’t understand about what separates survivors from those who succumb.I found this book to be fascinating and would recommend it to anyone interested questions of what a human is ultimately capable of. If you’re interested in medicine, biology, or survival, you’ll likely find this book engaging.

With a chapter apiece for intro, jungle, open seas, underwater, desert, high altitude, space and a conclusion, Dr. Kenneth Kamler touches on both the physiological and the psychological; the former, concretely, specifically, and most impressively, clearly. The latter, he covers in a more theoretical way, one man’s belief at how and why the brain can have such profound effect on the body, when precedent and science say otherwise, such as in the case of Beck Weathers getting up from a hypothermic coma, in high altitude, despite all reason.I have to admit, I read the chapters out of order (sacrilegious, I know, though I did go back and hit the ones I started with in their appropriately sequential location) and I’m glad I did, but that’s mostly due to personal comfort levels. I find the concept of pulmonary edema (high altitude) interesting; whereas a discussion of tunga flies (jungle) and cannibalism (open seas) might have had me balking too early to finish.The book is occasionally hilarious, often disturbing, more than often disgusting, and there’s a few lines in the conclusion of the jungle chapter that read a little uncomfortably like a noble savage schtick, though generally speaking Dr. Kamler remains both interested and respectful.He is both scientist and storyteller. Being the former myself, I would have preferred the book skewed more in that direction, but each chapter holds a healthy amount. More often, it reads as a series of short stories—true, in all cases—of stranded adventurers and their survivals or ends, accordingly. That he includes both makes each story a potential surprise, and he explains the ‘why’ in a generally respectful, informative way.Overall, I found the book to feel both authentic and interesting. A book I would definitely pick up again...though I may skip the jungle chapter and its tunga flies...

Surviving the Extremes by Kenneth Kamler, M.D., is full of both riveting and interesting stories of the survival of the human body and how it adapts to and overcomes (and sometimes fails to overcome) extreme conditions. The book itself has six chapters stressing survival stories in the jungle, on the high seas, in the desert, underwater, at high altitude, and in outer space. Each chapter includes an amazing story of survival (and sometimes the lack of) paired with an analysis of the biological responses that each individual experienced. There is an apparent theme of the wonder of the human body and its survival capabilities. However, there is also an emphasis on the “x-factors” that play an important role in survival. Specifically, Kamler stresses the so-called “will to survive” and how it was solely responsible for the survival of Beck Weathers in the Everest Tragedy of 1996. Simply put, this is a fun read. The stories are utterly gripping and the explanations are exceptionally interesting and educational. I personally loved the book because of Kamler’s narrative ability to combine his scientific knowledge with exhilarating stories that push the human body to its limits. The educational elements would that appear in this book make it an excellent choice for any anatomy-related course or for anyone interested in the limits of the human body.
