Young Mary Quinn was saved from the gallows and brought to a school where she was taught many things to help her improve her life. Once educated, she was given a chance to belong to the Agency which was organized as a private investigations firm staffed only by women.Mary's first case puts her in the Thorold household as companion to Angelica Thorold who is the bored daughter of an invalid mother and a businessman father. Mr. Thorold is suspected of smuggling antiquities from the Far East along with his other more legal shipments.Mary finds that she has entered a house of secrets. While investigating Mr. Thorold's office she encounters James Easton who is also investigating. James and his brother George run an engineering firm. George has decided that he's fallen in love with Angelica and wants to marry her. James wants to make sure the Thorold's business interests won't cause problems.Mary and James decide to work together since their interests coincide but neither quite trusts the other and James is a typical chauvinist of his age and time. Their investigations take them to warehouses and to a home for aging Chinese sailors among other places. Mary learns something of the past she has been denying. The story was filled with action and was an interesting historical mystery. I liked the way Mary has to deal with the conventions of the time. I also liked that Mary was smart, daring and resourceful. I liked the realistic romance that was beginning between James and Mary and how it was resolved.

I quite enjoyed this book. It was a fast and easy read and is an appropriately gentle escapist historical mystery for teens and tweens. The plot was engaging and the romantic element was light and full of fun banter. I thought the concept of a heroine who was half Asian was interesting, and raised thoughtful points about what it means to be of mixed race - something that is relevant to YA readers - but it didn't force the issue down readers throats. As for our protagonist not being enough of a Victorian lady, most YA readers won't care. If you care about that, read a primary text from the era instead. Appropriate for all ages.

The first point about this story that I enjoyed was uniqueness of Y.S. Lee’s approach to the mid-1800s. She doesn’t focus on all the aspects that most authors tend to romanticize. Her protagonist, Mary Quinn, is an orphan of Asian immigrant – who were a very mistreated minority at the time. The Agency itself is a stab at the sexism in that period, as it uses the fact that people underestimated women to their advantage. It also includes a romantic aspect, although that’s by no means the main point of the story being told. I approve of her love interest, as he’s not threatened by Mary’s strength – although perhaps surprised. The bantering between the two makes for some humorous moments. There’s also very good attention to historical detail that made me extremely interested in that time period. Lee brilliantly uses every part of that era to the benefit of the story.Although there are some moments where Mary messes up, she follows into the stereotype of a protagonist following almost too naturally into role of investigator. There is suspense in finding out who committed the crime, but I never felt worried for any of the main characters’ safety. This hurt the attempted tension in some of the major scenes. With that said, Mary is still presented as a very sympathetic character who I’ve personally grown to care for.Overall, it’s an interesting plot with a likeable protagonist in a brilliant time period. The fact the main character is of Asian heritage makes me so excited because that is so underrepresented in Victorian Era literature. I’ve already bought the second (and third…) and would strongly recommend this to be put on anyone’s to-read list!

Author Y. S. Lee presents an intriguing idea in her series of mystery novels called The Agency. The essential gist is that of a specialized private agency that employs women as spies in mid-nineteenth century England. The rationale for the characters is that the heads of the group believe in two truths: that women should have more opportunities than just wife, governess, or poverty; and that women are never taken seriously. This two-fold belief leads to the ability to hire out the services of this mysterious group's female agents because no one will bat an eyelash at saying things in front of women that they will say in front of men. Is this sexist? Yes. Is it realistic for the time as well? Also yes.The first book, A Spy in the House follows a young beginner agent named Mary Quinn. Miss Quinn has escaped a very harsh and tragic life on the streets (and gallows) when the Agency took her in as a student and later teacher. Upon finding out the truth of what the school does, Mary jumps at the opportunity presented to her to become an agent. As she is untested, and a novice agent, her first mission is a simple one: she is to observe what occurs around a family that a senior agent is investigating, and report back any suspicious activities she observes. It is a training mission, really. Nothing more. However, a convergence of factors, including her pride and a new possible ally, lead her to a far more involved role than she, or her superiors at the Agency, were prepared for.I really enjoyed this novel for a few reasons. One is that it isn't steampunk, but still dealt with some neat themes. Please do no not misunderstand. I am starting to love steampunk as a genre, but so often the cool stories with strong women characters, chivalrous men, and compelling interpersonal plot lines taking place in the past are steampunk. That this author did so in a very realistic portrayal of 19th century England, is terrific.I also appreciated that this wasn't some screed against men, and didn't excuse bad women simply because they were mistreated. It is a work that has both good and bad men and women as characters, and treats them thusly. When a character does something particularly selfish, it isn't just passed off as her being a "strong woman not submitting to a man", but seen for what it is, bad behavior. The research the author put in was obvious, and only served to strengthen the work. In fact, the only real criticism I have is that is still don't understand why the one bad guy didn't put a stop to the other bad guy's plans. Yes, there were legal issues, but nothing that should have made the one just endure it so pathetically. But, in a way, the one bad guy not being QUITE as ruthless works to the book's theme. And that's all I'll say about that. Also, the ending was a tad rushed. I really would like some more wrap-up than what this book gave us.Other than the above, the work was terrific, very meticulously researched, and well-worth a read.

This is basically a “making of” book for her Mekong River documentary film. She describes each segment of the film with background and behind the scenes stories along with her usual comedic take. Unfortunately, if you haven’t seen the film so that you have some idea of what she’s talking about, it’s probably going to be a rather frustrating read. You’re better off just watching the film as I’d say the book is only for her most devoted fans.

I'm not a reviewer, just a first time Sue Perkins reader. This book was excellent. I just finished it and you should too. Next up, as I am now a fan, Spectacles, which according to actual reviewers, is excellent as well. Seriously this book is so good.

Really enjoyed the book. Also fast service.

Here Comes Holi: The Festival of Colors

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-In this story within a story, a mother tells her child and several of the child's friends the ancient tale behind the Hindu celebration of Holi. This faithful if prosaic retelling recounts how the evil King Hirnakasyapu tried to kill his son Prahlad because he had acknowledged God Vishnu rather than the king as "the strongest in the whole world." Ultimately, it was not the prince who died, but his father and his aunt, after whom the festival is named. Notes about Holi and a glossary round out the work; it is unfortunate that this information was not worked into the text. The dull format features undistinguished, impressionistic illustrations, generally pastel watercolors on textured paper, that cover the entire left page of each spread. Only libraries serving large Asian Indian populations will want to consider this title.Diane S. Marton, Arlington County Library, VACopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I ordered this book expecting a simple story on the playfulness of Holi for kids...the colours of Gulaal, splash of Pichkari , and the fun of singing songs. I was disappointed because it went in great detail describing the Prahlad Holika story, the cover page is quite misleading in that way. Not sure if there is a need to have books on the Prahlad story especially when there are other titles for childrens books available on that subject. Sadly, I had to return it.

I like how the both covers a variety of things which can come your way whither they be unnatural disasters or monsters in general. I never took the time to research just how many bad movies SyFy has made over the years, it's like I'm reading an mini encyclopedia. The book is divided into two parts, the first focused on unnatural disasters (which is divided into subsections - Fighting Mother Nature and When Earth Attacks,) which include the following:Antdemic, Arachnoquake, Bataclysm, Beeclipse, Boaricane, Dinoami, Sharknado, Whalestrom and then Extreme weather Vortex, Firenado, Ice Twister, Metor Storm, Polar Storm, Stonado, Stonehenge Apocalypse and finally a Swamp Volcano. Then you have part time which is on monsters and divided into subsections- Death if by land and Destruction if by Sea and include the following: Basilisk, Bigfoot, Manticore, Mega Python, Mongolian Death Worm, Mothman, Prehistoric Cave Bear, Rock Monster, Saber-toothed Tiger, Dinoshark, Elektrokraken, Gatoroid, Ghost Shark, Piranhaconda, Pteracuda, Redneck gator, Robocroc, Sharktopus and Swamp Shark. Each disaster or monster has a description on what to expect from them and how to handle each situation.

If you care about your own future or the future of mankind, you must be prepared to survive onslaughts of startling phenomena or creatures at any time. Thankfully Andrew Shaffer with the help of noted shark survivalists Fin Shepard and April Wexler are on the case. This book takes up where the other more conventionally accepted survival manuals and manifestos leave off. Whether dealing with the new weather dynamics of Firenadoes, Ice Twisters, or the dreaded Stonehenge Apocalypse, Shaffer and company have actionable tips that will see you through. The book really shines in its dealings with horrifying creatures, starting with the titular Sharknadoes commonplace in Los Angeles and New York City. I was particularly pleased to see the book conclude with an advanced analysis of the recently recognized threat of Space Sharknadoes; it was wise to leave that for last as that is fairly advanced material. If you think this book is a one trick pony, though, think again: everything necessary is covered here, from the dreaded Mongolian Death Worm (they are slow, so just stay clear of their twelve-foot tongues) to the barely believable Rock Monster (see especially the valuable information contained in the text box titled "Who said it? The evil wizard Dimitar or Kanye West?") I happen to enjoy vacationing on cruise ships, and if you're like me you will definitely want to study up on the Elektrokraken, Piranhaconda, and most terrifying of all, the dreaded Ghost Shark. I just received my DVD documentary titled "Ghost Shark" in the mail, in fact, and am preparing for further study of this worthy adversary before my next seafaring adventure. This is a great book that can save your life with advice you can't possibly find anywhere else.

I now feel well equipped to handle any emergency that might befall me. Having survived an actual tornado, I was a little terrified at the thought of sharknados. Of course, living 300 miles from the ocean makes this highly unlikely. However, this book also offers sound advice for surviving other disasters such as the Stonehenge Apocalypse, Redneck Gators, Beeclipse and Bigfoot. This last is a true possibility. I know people who have seen Bigfoot. Did I mention I work in the field of substance abuse? Hurry, buy this book. Your life may depend upon it. I'm off to buy my life-size cardboard standee of Brad Pitt from World War Z for inspiration.

I heard about this as I was watching Sharknado 2 this summer, so I immediately grabbed my Kindle Fire and ordered it. Love it. A good day is when the SciFi channel runs cheesy movies all day long, especially of the shark ilk. I need to catch up on some of these movies. This is a good thing to turn to when I need a laugh or to put my life into perspective. (Being a teacher has a lot in common with Sharknado life.) Now I need to find other Sharknado souvenirs...there's a great Sharknado Cat Hat on Etsy, if anyone's interested.

Last week, there a Sharknado that attacked St. Louis and the Arch, but I was one of the few survivors thanks to this book. Buy it if you value your family's life!

This book is funny- it was a prize I gave out at my Sharknado Party! A teacher friend happen to win it and she said she is going to try to use it in her classroom

Really good book. Funny to share with people but also very interesting to read all the stories inside.

If you're a fan of the movies "Sharknado" (as we are), of course you need this book for your collection of shark-stuff!!! It's great!

Love Allende's books but this was not one of my favorites. Sometimes when I read her novels, I am transported and I can't put them down. With this one I found myself checking to see when the end of the chapter would appear so I would have a good stopping place. Not a good sign, but if you love her writing, it is important to see what she is up to now. I'm going to a lecture with her this week. Maybe I will get some better insights into the book...

Facil de leer,no pasara a la historia ni es uno de los mejores libros de Isabel Allende. Lo mejor del libro es la historia de Evelyn la Guatemalteca.

#13,378 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I pre-ordered this book almost a year ago (back in March of 2017), and am so happy that it's finally out! Although I've already transitioned to my silver hair and just passed my three-year dye-free anniversary, this is such an invaluable resource -- for those who are thinking about transitioning, for those who are in the process, and also for those who have already finished. If you're not familiar with Lorraine Massey, she's the author of Curly Girl: The Handbook and the creator of the Deva Curl line of hair products. Her book helped launch the Curly Girl Method of not using silicones or sulfates on your hair, and helped me make the transition to embracing my natural waves when I first discovered her book over seven years ago. This new book does the same thing for the silver-hair movement that her previous book did for the curly-hair movement, and is a wonderful guide to embracing your natural silver hair. The book is organized into several main sections:* The Glories of Being Silver -- explains the benefits of going dye-free* Enlightened -- provides suggestions for how to grow out your hair without adding any chemicals* The Highs and Lows of Transitioning -- explains how you can use highlights and lowlights to help with the growing-out process* Silver Streaks -- explains how adding a few streaks can help make the transition easier* Pixie Magic -- shows examples of how cutting your hair short can help start the process* Dyeing to Be Silver -- highlights (no pun intended) how adding silver can jump-start the transition* Glorious Grey to Stay -- includes homemade recipes to help keep your hair healthy and shiny, especially if you want to avoid silicones and sulfates* Silver Wear -- covers how to select clothes and makeup for your new coloringWhat's great about this breakdown is that it covers all the various techniques that are out there for transitioning so that you can make the best decision as to how you want to go about it. For me personally, when starting the transition process, I had considered adding highlights or going for a pixie cut, but decided in the end to cut about 13 inches off my waist-length hair and to gradually grow it out. The first few months (when it looked like I was just lazy about coloring my roots and had a "skunk stripe," as it's called, going on) were the hardest, but using different styling techniques and cutting off most of my hair made the process easier for me. After initially cutting it to that shoulder-length lob, about ten months in, I decided to get it cut to just below my ears. The last two chapters are especially invaluable, and I also love how many photos are included throughout the book to show what the process looks like on so many different women. Seeing photos provides motivation and makes the process seem less scary. It helps to know what to expect as you start this journey. As mentioned at the start of my review, I just passed the three-year mark of being dye-free. When I made the decision to stop dying my hair at the age of 43, only a small handful of my friends were supportive; most told me that letting my silvers sparkle would age me, and there were only a few books out there that helped with the process. I decided to trust my instincts and stop dyeing, and have been so happy with that decision. Although I have much less grey than I thought I did and it seemed to take so long to grow out, the process helped me learn a lot about myself. The decision to stop coloring is such a personal one; many women stop because they can no longer handle the fumes or because they have allergic reactions to the chemicals in the dye. For me, it started because I wanted to move away from chemical color and had been doing my own henna for a few years, but it had stopped covering the grey. I finally realized that I also wanted to dismantle the stereotype that women can't look chic and youthful when they embrace their greys. Whatever your epiphany or "ah ha!" moment is, this book can help you through those rough patches that are bound to crop up.Here are a few other tips while transitioning:* If you're on Facebook, consider joining some of the grey hair groups that are out there. Checking in and seeing the process and the finished looks helped keep me on course during the process and kept me from wavering.* Take monthly progress photos. It helps motivate you to see how you *are* making progress, even when it may not feel that way. (Warning: when you were dying your hair, it seemed like it would grow so quickly and you always had to color your roots, but when you're growing it out, time seems to slooooow way down! :-) )* Start a Pinterest board of inspirational women with silver locks. When I felt my resolve wavering (and, to be honest, it's happened even recently), looking at those photos helped remind me that silver hair doesn't age you. I still pin new looks and images of silver goddesses to inspire me.* Check out blogs and websites for more ideas. Lauren of How Bourgeois in particular has some wonderful posts about the process, as well as tricks for styling your hair during the grow-out process. Her half-up style was my go-to to help hide the demarcation line.My hairstylist (who does Deva cuts for curly hair) said that Lorraine Massey may also be coming out with a line of hair products for silver hair, and I sure hope that she does!Wherever you're at in your journey, I'd recommend getting this book. The information is so helpful and important, and I know I will return to this book again and again for ideas, just as I do with the _Curly Girl: The Handbook_. Lorraine, if you're reading this review, thank you for shining your light on us and providing us with such wonderful information!

This book contains very little useful information. It's mostly a bunch of "feel good" stories about women who stopped hiding their gray hair and how glad they were they did. I stopped coloring mine a long time ago. It looks great, but I want it to look spectacular. So few salons have any experience in managing the unique needs of maturing hair and I'm trying to find solid specifics regarding toners, textures and cuts I can discuss with a hairdresser to really bring out the best in it. But, other than briefly mentioning that there are toners of various shades available and, oh by the way, a great cut will make all the difference (which is true no matter what color your hair is, so thanks, Captain Obvious), there is nothing specific I can take to the salon to achieve my goals. If you are thinking about growing out your natural gray hair and need to be told it's OK to do that, you can read about a third of this book to get all you need out of it.

A few years back, Ms. Massey walked me thru very scary unchartered waters. How to finally after 60 years of fighting my natural curls, embrace and actually learn to love them. Now, she is doing the same with how to survive the transition from coloring my hair every 6 weeks for my entire adult life to embracing my natural silver hair. Like most ladies going through this experience, it can be a very emotional ride...accepting the natural “you”, plus friends, colleagues, and family reactions to your decision. This book is truly a MUST HAVE if you are on this journey. Like others, I am so hoping DevaCurl introduces a gray/silver hair product line!

I've had gray hair since my late 20's... It's now solid gray/white. I've been coloring it forever. I've decided to let it go natural and this book really helped me to feel good about the decision.I love that it offers several "case studies" for women going gray. The book covers the many ways to handle the going natural process.I bought the Kindle version and it was great. No problems at all. I'd recommend this book to any woman, of any age, who is considering giving up the coloring process!! It's one I'll refer to over and over!!

Amazing Lorraine Massey has done it again! She is all about accepting our natural beauty. She did it for curly girls and now she's done it for silver sirens. Very helpful for transitioning from coloring your hair to natural gray.

I found this book absolutely inspiring. Michele journey to acceptance and change is real and sincere. I should know because l went to the same process almost two years ago and our experiences were amazingly similar. Going gray is exactly as she says; not only about hair, it's about the liberating experience of being ourselves and braking the chains with the notion that there is something intrinsically wrong with being natural. It's ditching the fear of being "different" because you don't die with a bottle of hair dye firmly grabbed in your hand. The multiple histories of the women portrayed in the book are humbling and empowering. Love the book! Thank you Michele.

I am at the beginning of my going gray journey. I’m in my early 50s and had been dying my hair for about 10 years. This is a very inspirational and positive book. Many of the women in this book had different reasons for going gray but what they all had in common was that they had no regrets after doing it. There are also different ways to go gray from going “cold turkey”to having your colorist assist you in slowly revealing the gray. This book left me feeling good about my decision. The reason I’m not giving it five stars is because African American women were hugely underrepresented in this book. There is only one in the entire book. This was disappointing. Part of what helps you to feel good about this journey is seeing women who look like you. Thankfully there are online resources for this.

I'm a fan of the TV show Justified, every week I would see the name Elmore Leonard during the opening credits and I would say to myself " I gotta google this guys works! ", well when I finally did google Elmore I realized I was familiar with some of his work I just wasn't familiar with Elmore. Turns out he penned a few favorites of mine 3:10 To Yuma, Run Punch( which became the film Jackie Brown) as well as a series of books which became the TV show Justified. I just received a Amazon Fire as a gift and I wanted to try using it to read and maybe even listen to a book, lots to choose from but something about synopsis for this book, Pronto, made me decide to make this my first kindle \ Audible purchase. This book did not disappoint, from the get go there is suspense and mystery sprinkled with adventure. The Raylan Givens character is such a cool bad ass, he won't hesitate to play by the bad guys rules if it comes to that. I was hoping the Raylan I knew from the show would be present in this book and he sure was, the short and skinny of why I bought this book is I F'N love this character. The story was interesting and easy to follow. A great thing about reading on a Fire pad is being able to switch from reading to listening and vice versa, I would start reading in bed or on the couch and then switch to listening when I get up to wash dishes or fold laundry and when my chores are done I can switch back to reading. I was very pleased with the narration by Alexander Adams, he did Raylans Kentucky accent spot on and his Italian accent and women's voices were totally believable. As for the pace of the story it was as smooth as silk. I can't think of anything I didn't like about the book, if I had to nit pick something it might be a few of the conversations between characters rambled on a little to long for example at one point Harry plays a tape recording of bets he took as a bookie and they just ramble off placing random bets after bets it was a lot of " I'll take green bay 40 times at 2 and Houston 30 times at 5" that goes on for way to long. A big selling point about this book for me was that from what I had read about this book, Pronto, it seemed to hint the book ends up somewhere the TV show Justified begins. I was very pleased with this book and I will definitely be reading the next book in this series Riding The Rap.

Like many reviews here, I was drawn to Pronto after being sucked into the life of Raylan Givens on tv. I thought to myself that I had to read the spark that out the fuse for such an explosive show.I enjoyed picturing Timothy Olyphant acting out the witty dialogue and capping the baddies, although the novel breathes life into Raylan all by itself and even if you haven't seen Justified, I can't imagine you'll enjoy Pronto any less. I actually noticed a couple scenes from the show that were displayed a bit differently in the book, I could still see the inspiration for the show. All in all Pronto is a great book, with funny, dangerous and like able characters putting on quite a fun show.I tip my "cowboy hat" to Mr.Leonard

One of the absolute best, funniest, and entertaining reads you will ever feast your eyes and thoughts on. This is one of those I cannot put it down books. You say to yourself over and over, just few more chapters and I will go to bed and get some sleep. Sure...And you find yourself still reading at two thirty in A.M. I am Justified junkie and I am so happy to have read this novel . I love that they took this great character and made him and some of his cohorts into a fantastic TV mini-series. Pass this book by and you have missed some great riveting entertainment. If you accomplish nothing more in life you should make a real attempt at reading all the Elmore Leonard books you can get your hands on but be warned it may place a real strain on your marriage or relationship.

PRONTO by Elmore LeonardI've never read Elmore Leonard before, but I am a huge fan of the TV series "Justified," which is based on his short story, "Fire In The Hole." The novel "Pronto," is the first novel in which Leonard introduces the Raylan Givens character (main character in the TV series). With Leonard's recent passing, I decided to dive into those novels which featured this character.Leonard had a laid back writing style that was easy and enjoyable to read. In this novel, the story is told through each of the character's perspectives, allowing the reader to see all events from multiple viewpoints. Although it is definitely Raylan's story, it is also equally the story of the other characters, all interwoven into an exciting adventure, racing from the US to Italy and back. Although I haven't read enough of Leonard's work featuring the Raylan character to be sure, I believe the final action of the novel is the set up for "Fire In The Hole," providing the reason for Raylan's transfer back to the Harlan County, KY offices of the Marshall Service.Like most novel series characters who jump to the small screen (well, some home screens aren't so small anymore, are they?), Raylan's backstory in the novels is a bit different than in the series. Winona (ex-wife) is less important and certainly described less attractively than Natalie Zea, who plays her in the tv series! Also, in the TV series, they have no children (until the 4th season, anyway), but he has two sons in the novels. However, the basic character is the same, for the most part, and I'm looking forward to reading the next novel in this short series, "Riding The Rap."No problems with editing, proofing, etc. A thoroughly enjoyable read as Raylan tries to keep the rascally Harry Arno and Arno's girlfriend Joyce, alive and out of the grasp of Tommy Bucks (aka The Zip), and the rest of the gangsters out to make sure all three return home in a pine box.

Great novel with a steady rhythm and a really good writing, a good development of the main character, but also the secondary actors, I really like the detail and closeness to the personality of the main actors, good and bad.I discover the novels after finishing the Justified television series, and was greatly pleased when I find various of the main situations in the best episodes in the series in their original form as parts of the book (and in the second one, which I'm reading now).I strongly recommend this book.

Pioneer Sampler: The Daily Life of a Pioneer Family in 1840, by Barbara Greenwood Heather Collins

From Publishers Weekly

Laura Ingalls Wilder meets David Macaulay in this thoroughly engaging book. Greenwood combines a fictional account of a hardworking settler family with detailed descriptions of nearly every aspect of pioneer life, from the working of a gristmill to making cheese, dyeing wool, sugaring off and building a house. Recipes and directions for do-it-yourself activities (candle-dipping, making ink, playing a Native American game called Knucklebones, etc.) help young readers get a real feel for the fabric of life "in the olden days." (They will also endear the book to teachers looking for ideas for those units on the pioneer experience.) Greenwood is a talented writer and her narrative passages about the family, brief as they are, convey a lively sense of character and place. Well-researched and unusually accessible, and generously illustrated with Collins's black-and-white sketches, the book contains something for every level of interest and ability. As a resource, it's a must-have for anyone with even the remotest interest in this period of American history. Ages 8-12. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8?Greenwood introduces the fictional Robertsons and, through the family's activities, describes the details of everyday life on the frontier circa 1840. This mix of story and information makes the book a natural for use in whole-language classrooms. Report writers in traditional programs will find useful facts and diagrams tucked in between the fictional segments. Food, clothing, schooling, social life, household equipment, building, and more are covered in the wide-ranging text. The detailed black-and-white drawings are both decorative and informative. Edwin Tunis covers a wider range of topics in Frontier Living (Crowell, 1976) for a slightly older audience. For younger readers, Raymond Bial's Frontier Home (Houghton, 1993) has a narrower focus; his full-color photographs of actual (and reproduced) artifacts add interest. Where pioneer living is part of the curriculum and for readers fascinated by the time period, Greenwood's title will be a welcome and useful addition.?Elaine Fort Weischedel, Turner Free Library, Randolph, MACopyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Yes, it's a children's book. And it's engaging, informative, well-formatted, and with lovely illustrations to boot. It would make a perfect companion piece to Wilder's "Little House" books, especially the first one having to deal with the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Greenwood has done an excellent job of tying in a lot of background information as well as actual history to a basic story about a representative (fictional) pioneer family, their building in the wilderness, and their day-to-day life. The different sections also have a lot of craft / how-to pages for children (and adults!) to try their hands at making some of the pioneer items detailed in the book. If you have children, work with children, have grandchildren - share this book with them. I guarantee you'll all enjoy it.

I bought this book for my third grade daughter for a pioneer study. I read the whole book out loud to her and we both enjoyed it greatly. It was filled with information and interesting details. I even learned a few new things and that's saying something because I have loved studying pioneers since I was a girl. The illustrations are handsome and the book is laid out very nicely. The narrative story of the family is done well, it is easily read over a few days time in small sessions. You won't feel overwhelmed by the information here but neither will you feel gypped either. The activities in the book are approachable without being so watered down that you wondered if they really qualified as pioneer study tie ins. Well done!

I probably can't add much to other reviews. It is simply an excellent book. Very interesting with lots of neat facts and information about early American life that both children and adults alike will enjoy learning about. The illustrations are well done. The activities are great! Hands down a great book to read to/with your children and follow up with activities.

After reading this book, I would like to get a lot more of the Barbara Greenwood books for our school library. It is rare that you can find true history in STORY FORM along with such cute photos. The artist in this book did a very good job!

Book gives destined description and pictures of various situation and common tools used in the time of settling the west. It is along the vein of Laura Ingall's stories but with a more non fiction feel and not exactly a story. It does follow a family called the Robertsons but there is mostly information regarding living. We homeschool and really enjoy this book and ehat it offers.

I very much enjoyed the historical notes and activities interspersed throughout the text. These additions make for great homeschooling activities and give the story more depth. It was also nice that they were placed in spots where they did not distract from the fictional story of the Robertson family. There were enough illustrations to keep younger learners interested. The family described lived in Canada, but everything applied just as well to American pioneer families. I look forward to reading more of this author's work.

I loved this book. My children have been very into pioneers lately and so I bought this book after a friend recommended it. I wasn't disappointed. I loved the way the author mixed a fictional story (we follow the Robertson family through their daily life) with actual facts (how pioneers made butter, what a typical home looked like, etc.). I also enjoyed the many hands on crafts and activities that were included throughout the book. I would read a little bit to my children every day. They loved it! Great book. I will definitely be recommending this book to friends.

If you or your child are interested in pioneer life, this is a great book with many facts and very nice illustrations. I gave this to an 8 year old who is an advanced reader, but the stories/experiences of the pioneer family could be read to a younger child. I read the book myself when it arrived, I could not put it down.

A great pocket guide for birds in the Sierra Nevada.

Essential item for backpack or gloves box, has key info for identification- heavy lamination. Very durable. Would buy other guides as they are great reference material to have at your fingertips.

I thought for the price it would be a book. Just a folded brochure. Not worth the price.
