In the second half ot the book, we follow his decision to go to Occidental College in California, his transfer to Columbia University and -- after graduation -- his career as a community organizer in New York City and (at 24) in Chicago's South Side. Then, on to the Illinois State Legislature, the U.S. Senate and then to running for President.This is a fairly thin paperback book -- only 134 pages -- with good-sized print. The vocabulary is straightforward at a junior-to-high-school level, and follows a journalistic style. I agree with another, previous reviewer that it's not an exciting book. But, it's fair, and indepth enough that the reader will know a lot more about Obama's life than when she/he began.Because he is now in office and the book finishes as he is elected, some will believe that the book is now too dated to buy. The younger Barack Obama struggled growing up without a father for much of his life. His mother fell in love a second time with an Indonesian man and marriedhim. Barack moved to Indonesia with his mother and step father and they had a baby girl. Barack's mother later sent him back to Hawaii to live with his maternal grandparents when he was ten years old. He lived with his grandparents until his mother and step father separated. Barack's mother came back to Hawaii and they lived a very poor lifestyle. Barack's mother decided to move back to Indonesia with her daughter Maya. Barack stayed with his grandparents and lived with no father or mother. Barack's childhood was hard and a rather lonely childhood. This background would affect his entire life. This book is beneficial to read because it shows that anyone can achieve big dreams no matter what one's background is. Barack Obama would have been the last person anyone would have expected to make it big in life. He was fatherless, he was black, his family was multiethnic, and he was not rich. He did learn a myriad of lessons by his humble upbringings. For example, his grandparents taught him "the Midwest virtues of hard word and service to one's country". I bought this copy for my mom. I'm about 3/4 of the way through the book and things are really starting to click with me. I struggled in the beginning finding the negative aspects of myself, but as I read on and DID THE EXERCISES, things started to get easier and I started connecting with the book. It's written very well and an easy read. Debbie (R.I.P.) really breaks things down to help you to get to your shadow self and find those aspects of yourself that you try to hide from the world, but mostly hide from yourself. Then she has you integrate those aspects into your life, which can be challenging, but she gives you the tools and exercises needed to do it. I used my phone to record the exercises which require either a quiet mind starting with deep breaths and your imagination or a quiet mind and access to your subconscious. It's easier to listen to the words in the exercise, then turn around and immediately start writing what your experience was. I highly recommend recording your voice for the exercises. It might sound cheesy, and you may want to wait until no one is home for privacy's sake if you're unable to sneak off for some alone time, but I guarantee it's worth it. The exercises really help and the book itself is incredibly helpful in finding that balance between your shadow self and your conscious self and integrating them. This book is for everyone because we all have a shadow self and it's a blessing to shine the light on it and let it be part of your true self.

Debbie Ford was a guest speaker at my health coaching school and her raw emotional, honest story was revolutionary and key in the work I am doing today nearly a decade later. It is not about "getting rid" of our flaws, it is about embracing, accepting and loving all of who we are. When we are trying to hide a part of ourselves, it leads us to all sorts of unhealthy behaviors, then we try to diet, be sober or regimented to be "perfect" enough for other people to accept us. There is great freedom in digging to the core of all this, fully loving yourself and letting your light shine to guide other's home.

I really enjoyed the book and the powerful, life-changing message Debbie Ford left for us. I had a bit of a hard time reading the book for the main message is reinforced over and over again. Nonetheless, I highly recommend this book: Great insights, invaluable exercises to practice (some quite difficult to face, I'll admit) and inspiring life stories shared from her conferences and gatherings. Thank you!

After a few rattling dreams, I realized my subconscious was pushing me to "deal" with my shadow side. Without any idea how to do so, I found this book and it has been powerful. The book has opened my eyes to several things about my life that is changing my attitudes, behaviors and most importantly my perspective on life. I think often times, you're told by others, "it's all perspective - that is the key to change." But it's hard to know what that means. I've followed several exercises in the book - and it changed my perspective - allowing me to let go (another one of those things people say you should do, but hard to know how.)The exercise where you own words you have judged others on by saying "I am _____" was particularly powerful for me. As I said them, I can feel these words just pushing at me at parts of my energy body. It's like something there needed to be released. The more I said it, the more it released. At times, it hurt. There was a tremendous amount of pain to release. But it was the most painful ones that was the most rewarding. As she said in her book - you felt lighter. This feeling of burying a secret inside yourself no longer needed to be veiled.It's changed the way I view people in a way I never thought possible. I now see people I dislike as my teachers - people who are brought to me to show me parts of myself I need to accept. And that has had a profound and completely amazing effect on my relationship with those people. All of a sudden, the tension lifted... and we got along better.I was also going through a period where I needed to reconcile the "old" me who was egotistical and ambitious and the "new" me who strived to be compassionate and humble. I beat myself up for having been that person, and was working so hard to suppress those old parts of myself and it was causing me to be depressed about who I am. The book made me realize that I didn't need to suppress that person - instead, it needed acceptance and there's no reason to completely put that part of myself away.It wasn't until after I finished the book that I found out Debbie Ford is no longer with us and had such a long struggle with cancer. Indeed, some may wonder about her teachings if she was sick - then could we really listen to this way of healing through shadow work? But I think it makes her human. The whole idea of the shadow is that it's always there. We will always struggle with the shadow - even the teacher.

Great! This book offers an insightful perspective on our inner landscape - the shadows and self worth we suppress, the story and belief system we subconsciously create, and the aspects of self that we project onto others. The book also provides valuable tools to bust through the story to assuage our judgements of self and others and unearth self-worth and contentment with what IS.

Just a few levels above the self help section sits this book. If you are headed down the spiritual journey path, but find yourself being blocked in various areas, this book can really help. Interesting is all the experiences we tuck away for survival in this 3D world. Highly recommend this book!

Debbie Ford has a nice manner of speaking, and is pleasant to listen to. She brings to light many of the common fears and issues that we all deal with, and breaks down tools to help work past the mental blocks in our lives. I have found her to be, by far, one of my favorite mentors.

Very informative for single source for photograph history and critique. I particularly like reading the book in Kindle software because it allows me to Google photographer images directly from the text.I would recommend this book to any aspiring photographer.

This book is a must have. It should be in every University library and on every individual's bookshelf. Why does a photographer want an education, formal or otherwise? Alone, there are so many quotable statements here and although there is some referencing, the view points from an eclectic group of experts are priceless.

This book has essays on photography by famous photographers in the mid-20th Century. An excellent read for anyone interested in the history of photography.

Esoteric... at best.

Solid and thorough writing

This book contains articles written by many photographers and critics. As a result there is a wide variety of quality.

Excellent collection of extracts and excerpts from established photographic practitioners, essayists, and educators, a great book for a beginner's photography course. Touches on a number of related issues including the image-making process, the role of photography in the arts and society, photography criticism, fundamentals of successful art practice, and the role and function of the educator, among others. Weaknesses of this collection include several frustratingly short extracts, the absence of images to support or exemplify the text, and the near total absence of opinion from anywhere outside the borders of the USA.

If a photographer might think that a picture is worth 10,000 words, why would one need a book of words about photography? Wouldn't a few well chosen photographs have obviated the need for this book? Probably not, because the aforesaid major premise is probably wrong, or at least overstated. There are some concepts that are so complex that they can't be expressed in pictures. That presumably was the thought of the editors.In his introduction Charles Traub, who is the chair of the School of Visual Arts' department devoted to photography, says that the world of photography has changed in recent years and that the writings included in the book are designed to prepare the fine arts student to enter into the world of contemporary photography. In order to do this the authors have divided the book into four parts: "Reflections on the Medium: What It Means to Photograph; How Others See Them: Considering the Photographer; Finding an Audience: Working with the Professionals; and Guide for the Uneducated: Higher Education and Photography. Each Section contains several short essays ranging from less than a half page to 11 pages. Although the editors disavow any idea of providing photographic instruction, the piece by Henri Cartier-Bresson comes the closest to instruction. On the other hand, the piece by Dave Eggers, in which he describes the thoughts running through the mind of a young women waiting to take a gritty but artistic photograph might be interesting to a creative writing student, and while a bit of fun, does not seem to be useful to a photographer. The interview with Charlotte Cotton, a museum photography curator, seemed the most accurate and insightful description of the current photographic art market. For me the most useful piece was an outline of how to critique a photograph by Ralph Hattersley.The Amazon star system is not useful in the evaluation of a book like this. The readings in this book are a mixed bag. I suspect that most photographers, including those earning a living from their work, will find little to benefit them here, although they may find some of the articles of interest. On the other hand, for the individual earning a Master of Fine Arts in Photography, and interested in entering into the contemporary art photography market, the essays may prove useful.If they have not done so already, those who want to read more about photography, with an emphasis on its history as well as its philosophy might do better to read an old classic, "Photography in Print: Writings from 1816 to the Present" by Vicki Goldberg.
