While the publisher -- Zondervan -- is seen as a leading publisher of Christian literature and theology, I was pleased to note that the authors took a fair and even-handed young-adult approach to covering Obama's life and career. Tying Obama to the rhetoric of Martin Luther King's call to the "fierce urgency of now," and his electorial success to the "unprecedented level of involvement among young people," they contend that "Obama's story is one that is profoundly rooted in his faith in Jesus Christ" and his involvement in the African-American church. The first half of the book serves as a recounting of Obama's humble childhood. The autthors write about his parents' divorce, how he learned "the Midwest virtues of hard work and service to one's country" from his grandparents in Hawaii, the confusion he probably felt from being treated as an African-American at school and as a white child at home, and having to grow up without a father (his real father died in an automobile accident in Kenya). In the second half ot the book, we follow his decision to go to Occidental College in California, his transfer to Columbia University and -- after graduation -- his career as a community organizer in New York City and (at 24) in Chicago's South Side. Then, on to the Illinois State Legislature, the U.S. Senate and then to running for President. This is a fairly thin paperback book -- only 134 pages -- with good-sized print. The vocabulary is straightforward at a junior-to-high-school level, and follows a journalistic style. I agree with another, previous reviewer that it's not an exciting book. But, it's fair, and indepth enough that the reader will know a lot more about Obama's life than when she/he began.Because he is now in office and the book finishes as he is elected, some will believe that the book is now too dated to buy. I disagree, as I highly recommend it for middle school, high school and for the young adult sections of public libraries as well as for those families who are home-schooling or for Christian school librarians and teachers.R. Bob Carlton and Ariele Gentiles wrote the book Barack Obama an american story to show the story of a man with an unlikely background grow into and become one of the most important people in America. This book serves to show the life of Barack Obama. The book is an inspiration to anyone who has felt alone or has had struggles in life. This book shows that Barack Obama overcame struggles in his own life. This book is beneficial for any American to read because it shows the true story of Barack Obama's life and that anything is possible, no matter one's differences. This book is beneficial for Americans to read to realize where Barack Obama came from and to discover his childhood background. It shows Americans that Barack Obama overcame a myriad of struggles and that he knows what it means to go through hard times. Barack Obama was born in the state capital of Honolulu. His father, Barack Obama Sr., was born in Kenya and had grown up herding goats. He wanted a new life so he traveled to Hawaii to study economics at the East-West Center of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Ann Dunham, a young lady from Kansas, moved to Hawaii with her family and she registered at the University of Hawaii in Manoa. Barack Sr. and Ann courted and Ann became pregnant (she was only eighteen). They decided to get married and their engagement was very much disproved by their parents and peers. Interracial marriages were very rare and many states actually outlawed them. Barack was born and when he was just two years old, his father left and his parents separated. His father eventually returned to Kenya and saw his son only once more before dying in an automobile accident in 1982. The younger Barack Obama struggled growing up without a father for much of his life. His mother fell in love a second time with an Indonesian man and marriedhim. Barack moved to Indonesia with his mother and step father and they had a baby girl. Barack's mother later sent him back to Hawaii to live with his maternal grandparents when he was ten years old. He lived with his grandparents until his mother and step father separated. Barack's mother came back to Hawaii and they lived a very poor lifestyle. Barack's mother decided to move back to Indonesia with her daughter Maya. Barack stayed with his grandparents and lived with no father or mother. Barack's childhood was hard and a rather lonely childhood. This background would affect his entire life. This book is beneficial to read because it shows that anyone can achieve big dreams no matter what one's background is. Barack Obama would have been the last person anyone would have expected to make it big in life. He was fatherless, he was black, his family was multiethnic, and he was not rich. He did learn a myriad of lessons by his humble upbringings. For example, his grandparents taught him "the Midwest virtues of hard word and service to one's country". Barack Obama made a decision to go to Occidental College in California on scholarship. He began to become interested in cultural affairs and politics. He decided that he wanted a bigger school so he transferred to Columbia University on scholarship. After Barack graduated he became a community organizer in New York City. Barack then decided to go to Harvard Law school on scholarship where he became the president of the Harvard Law Review. He worked his way up to being on the Illinois State Legislature and also the U.S. Senate. He then ran for President. It is amazing to see where Barack Obama came from and what he has accomplished with his life. This book is beneficial to read because it shows the true life of Barack Obama. There is so much gossip in the country about Barack Obama but this book simply shows his life truly and factually. It shows where he was born, where he lived as a child, it shows his struggles very openly and honestly (for example, Barack Obama was into drugs as a teen), it shows his love story, it shows his opinions and why he has those opinions, and much more. The book does not look down on Barack Obama but it is also not uplifting him. It simply tells the true information about his life; good and bad. Every American should read this book to learn the true facts about Barack Obama. Barack Obama started off as a poor child with a single mother and he grew into one of the most important people in the country. The life of Barack Obama is beneficial for Americans to learn about to realize that he is just a person with a background like anyone else. This book gives the factual and true story of Barack Obama's life. The book shows that anything is possible no matter where someone comes from.
I plan to share this book with the community and school libraries in my town...and with English, History, Government and Sociology teaching friends in the US and abroad. In language accessible to young people, the inspiring anecdotes in this biography often step beyond politics to focus on the unexpected journey of our new president - a journey that proves the American Dream lives on. Regardless of your personal politics, this life story should empower young people to recognize the strength that education and perseverance offer them to impact the real world, starting today.
Few people are ambivalent when it comes to Mr. Obama and this includes adolescents. For those who want to learn more about his background, this book does an excellent job of surveying those factors and forces that have helped form him. No matter what an adolescent or youth worker's political persuasion is, he or she will find the book helpful in creating rich discussions on numerous topics dealing with politics, family and faith.
