I love all of Maria's books and I am a huge fan. I use all of Maria's cookbooks and would highly recommend all of them. This book is probably my kids favorite though. I use it almost daily in my house! Because these treats are so healthy I make one almost every night for dessert. My 4 kids love taking turns picking out the treat and they love helping me make it as well. We have almost completely eliminated sugar from our diet and we have never felt better. I don't even remember that last time one of us got sick. This book has really helped my kids to embrace the healthy way of eating. Last night we went to a family party and I allowed my children to have the sugar and starch filled birthday cake. After the party all of my kids felt horrible from all of the sugar! One of my kids said, "Mom, your cake is so much better than Grandma's." My cake (Maria's cake) has no sugar and no starch and my kids now prefer it. They also love all of her candy bars (snickers, twix, whatchamacallit), the cookies, cinnamon rolls, etc. In fact, we have tried almost every recipe and we have loved them all. Thank you Maria!

I got this for my son when he was almost 6 and of course he didn't pay much attention, the illustrations being in black and white and the text being so instructive, however, this book got ME totally absorbed! Illustrations and explanations are very interesting, it's a fantastic book. Now that my son is 8 it's time to put it back to his library, he'll appreciate it now.

GET THIS BOOK! Why? Because Maria Emmerich knows how to combine ingredients to make & makeover traditional desserts into healthy ones that give no clue that they're good for you; she has the enviable and unique talent of being able to take a traditional recipe and transform it completely! The recipes in this particular book are grain free and low carb, so you won't find white flour or sugar included but I can emphatically say I never missed them. I've been too busy enjoying Boston Cream Minis, Cookie Dough Dip, Cannolis, Cookie Candy Bars, Chocolate Lava Cake, Turtle Cheesecake with Caramel Sauce, and the list goes on and on.Sometimes when people are seeking and transitioning into a healthier diet they feel that it requires herculean strength and will power to resist all the evil frankenfood that is out there or that they have to spend exorbitant amounts of money to eat well because their tastebuds have been sentenced for life in the land of bland. However, suppose you could eat food that was good for you and tasted so delicious you would be willing to pay a personal chef to create dishes to specifically please your palate and simultaneously guide you in making better nutritional choices? That's essentially what you get when you obtain any of Maria's books As a nutritionist Maria knows about the science of food and how it works in and affects our bodies; either negatively or positively. However, as a chef she knows that most of us don't only eat food for its nutritional value but primarily because we like the taste and mouth feel; therefore, the recipes she develops are both nutritious and delicious (which, by the way is the title of another one of her books Nutritious and Delicious). In addition, the recipes are relatively easy to make (even for people who may not necessarily enjoy cooking) and use ingredients that are easy to find in most stores or order from websites like Amazon or Netrition.I'll tell you a brief story how I found this to be true. Last year I had Christmas dinner with my sister and some friends. Since I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes I try to stay on track with my food intake especially with regard to carbohydrates (whether potatoes or candy bars). However, among the dessert delectables was a Hershey chocolate cake. This was the cake of my youth. The homemade deep dark chocolate kind of cake that requires two cups of sugar and an additional three cups for the even darker, richer frosting. Like Eve should have done, I never should have given it a sidewise glance to acknowledge it; never mind eating it but chocolate and I are old friends that go way, way back. I tried to hold out but it was Christmas and this was chocolate cake; for me, an (im)perfect storm. Ultimately, the cake was there and I did eat of it; again and again and again. Knowing I was sliding down a slippery slope, I frantically tried to stave off and ignore the cravings that had been abruptly reawakened. Not so easy. I wanted chocolate cake and not just any chocolate cake I wanted it to taste like the forbidden Hershey chocolate cake.Long story short, I went searching for a realistic low carb version of the cake although I despaired of finding one. Just when I was about to give up I happened to stumble upon a recipe for a Mocha Fudge Cake on Maria's blog. In fact, that recipe was blogged exactly one year ago today on October 7, 2011 and graces the cover of her book "The Art of Eating Healthy". What a Godsend! Delight yourself in the Lord and He shall give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4). The cake was exactly what I was desiring and looking for! Decadent rich dense chocolate that was not only comparable to but better than the Hershey's cake AND it had the bonus of being healthier. I know this because Maria generously included the nutritional information for the traditional cake per serving (42 carbs) and her "healthified" version per serving (3.1net carbs). Needless to say, I was indeed absolutely delighted; so much so that I immediately ordered another book for my sister whose grandson was diagnosed with type 1 juvenile diabetes. When I make Maria's recipes even high-carbers exclaim how good they are and don't realize I'm serving low carb food. We now know that eating low carb is generally better for you even if you're not diabetic or trying to lose weight. However, I am both so Maria's recipes have been like finding a gustatory treasure trove for me. I'm so glad I "discovered" her. She definitely has a talent as evidenced by the fact that I have three of her books and a smile on my face from reading and eating sumptuously :>) Buy the book. You won't be disappointed.

I just got my cookbooks and they are beautiful! Very nice layout and tons of info on ingredients. I'm almost emotional! I've tried several of Maria's recipes from her blog and my family has enjoyed everything. I'm on a mission to get us wheat and sugar free and with Maria's help and materials I feel empowered. I read her book Secrets to a Healthy Metabolism and ordered two of her cookbooks. I hope to have the whole library someday!! Soooooo happy! Thank you, Maria!!

Ready to say goodbye to sugar and still eat sweets like a king or queen? I found that once I gave up carbs my body did begin to release and lose fat and when I eat full fat I do not regain. This type of eating really works well for my body and I don't miss a thing. In fact, now I eat more than ever. I have bought three of Maria's books and enjoy them all. I find most everything really easy to make and not only delicious but also fun to make and eat. I did have to invest some money in a lot of new ingredients and sugar free sweeteners and such, but clearly it is worth it. I am happy!

For someone newly diagnosed with diabetes and a life long sweet tooth, going on a low carb diet to avoid having to take insulin was a nightmare. With little to no guidance from my physician, I started searching online for low carb recipes that I could actually eat. I stumbled onto Maria's website, and have been an avid fan every since. She makes a healthier version of almost every food you can imagine, and is always posting more. There are some tips and tricks to low carb cooking, but as you read through Maria's cookbooks she tells you how to make it work.If you have a rapid sweet tooth like me, this is the cookbook for you!

I just read the book ... and am totally disappointed. I am Swiss and have been living in the US since 1995. I don't like her lack of knowledge and how she portrays Americans and on a very personal note ... I find it utterly exhausting to be a French woman if she accurately assesses her fellow countrywomen. I would NOT buy the book again and it turned me off to read any other book she has written before. I am 60 and the title let me think that this book is all about the little secrets of French women without using all the botox, brand names skin care, etc. That is clearly not the case.

Ms. Guiliano seems to have gotten a bit complacent about her responsibility to her readers on this one, and I'm really surprised that her editors didn't hold her to a higher standard. French Women Don't Get Fat was a great read, choc full of specific, helpful tips, anecdotes that readers could relate to, even recipes. French Women Don't Get Facelifts is a chore to read. It doesn't flow well, and the thoughts are poorly organized, as if they had been jotted down on airplane cocktail napkins and typed up by an assistant. And the content itself is, well, so basic and trite as to be pretty much worthless. What happened? Not sure, but I really regret having spent money on this book. There's nothing here but Ms. Guiliano's brand, and she isn't doing it any favors. She really should have worked harder for her readers.

I enjoy reading anything Mireille Giuliano writes and according to this recent addition to her lineup, she is obligated by her publisher for another book beyond this one, which I will look forward to reading. I have a copy of all her previous offerings and look upon time spent with one of her chatty books as a pleasant part of my day. That being said, I got the impression this book was rather hurriedly dashed off between intercontinental trips. It seemed to hit the high spots, wasn’t much on detail, and although I can understand a rehash of some of her previous material for the benefit of new readers, I also felt she relied too heavily on past efforts. Frankly, I expected, and hoped for, a little more. So much more could have been done with this book, that would have been helpful, and a number of opportunities were missed to expand what it had to offer. I sincerely hope that her next book will not be a rehash of past material with a different title. My comments follow.Exercise: Walk, swim, climb stairs, do some yoga. All from previous books. Although she admits to now having added some Pilates exercises to the mix which she does at home, and mentioned strength training, she does not share her new found knowledge or anything of her personal routine with us. Disappointing. The most worthwhile part of this section was a detailed instruction regarding four yoga breathing exercises, which was very well done. Everything else was short on detail, hit the high spots.Diet: The author’s personal diet appears to be primarily vegetable, low protein, low carb, low calorie, heavy on dairy using that for a lot of the protein, which would not set well with a goodly percentage of the readership. The only alternative suggested was to eat Mediterranean, which we have been hearing from a variety of sources for the past 20-30 years.Recipes: This book has fewer recipes than any of her others, so there is not much in that department to whet anticipation.Makeup and Hair: Useful admonition to look appropriate for one’s age instead of like a circus clown with things that are too obvious, amusing anecdote to illustrate this. Typical advice from previous books to get a good, professional haircut several times a year, as well as professional color if gray is not for you.Supplements: Author displays fearfulness and lack of knowledge in this department. Could have done without this totally useless chapter that espouses the 1920’s ideal of getting everything from one’s food, and says nothing about the European bans on GMOs; organics, depleted soil and comparisons of nutritional value in food from 50 years ago versus today.Facelifts: Part of the title of the book and this chapter could be boiled down to, don’t get one because it won’t match the rest of you, just use creams and lotions the way my mother and grandmother did and you’ll be fine. To be perfectly honest, Raquel Welch’s book, which is available on Amazon, did a much better, more informative job with more detailed information on this subject, and I highly recommend it, Raquel: Beyond the Cleavage.Employment: Although a minor section toward the end, rather an afterthought, it should not have been included due to the lack of knowledge on the part of the author of the hardships the majority of people 50 and over face in the U.S. regarding employment during these times. I can understand that because the author’s life and finances insulate her from harsher realities, and this is part of the charm of her writing; however, it would also have been best to leave this bit out altogether.Advice from older women of her acquaintance: This is definitely an area of missed opportunity. These wise, elderly ladies of class and substance were briefly mentioned, all too briefly quoted, and served only to whet the appetite for an entrée that never appeared.

I absolutely adore Mireilles other books. I really do believe her culinary and diet/lifestyle tools are her forte. I ordered this book with the confidence of loving and owning her other three books. I have just finished reading the book and ended the last 20% of the book just flicking and skimming the pages. Her advice is very general and not at all specific like her previous. Like her other reads, I was expecting some real pearls of wisdom - best kept secrets! They did not exist. Just general talk about thing we really know. Dare I say it, I found the book even boring in most areas. I would not purchase this as a gift for a friend. There are much better beauty books out there! What a shame and a disappointment this book was...!

After Reading this book, I felt so much better about myself and learned a few tips and tricks to make myself feel so much better about my age and my face and my body. Thanks for such an enjoyable read. I definetely recommend this book for any women who may be feeling a little down about herself. This book will definetely pick your spirits up.

Excellent book. Very informative I have it in audio but I had to get the book because there is so much helpful information that I want to mark the pages and go back to it occasionally. I have also tried some of her recipes and they are actually very good. Its a great read for women of a certain age.

I liked this book very much because I'm directly affected by her advise and suggestions, if I take them. Mireille Guiliano is an excellent author. I loved her first book, French Women don't get fat and the logic behind the style of the French women and their everyday lives. They seem to evoke a "flair" that keeps them interesting and "alive". There are many good suggestions to help us in aging.

This is an enjoyable read. I like all the writers' work, but this does not really shed any light on anything new. Read it for enjoyment rather than any other reason...

"Emotions Explained with Buff Dudes" is a compilation of webcomics by author Andrew Tsyaston, aka Shenanigansen (or Shen, for short), popular writer and artist of the webcomics "Owlturd Comix" (now renamed "Shen Comix") and "Blue Chair". The comics presented in this book have been taken from both of those, and there's a few I don't recognize, so there's a chance they're exclusive to this book. The comics are generally short, amusing tales that give a physical personification to emotions or abstract concepts (like weather) in order to entertain by mocking inspirational life lessons while occasionally subverting itself by providing legitimate inspirational life lessons. They're cute, smart and most of the time absolutely hilarious. The art style is attractive in its simplicity while at the same time allowing the author's massive imagination to run free. While it's true that a few of the jokes in these webcomics seem to share the same structure (a fact that got the author mocked once; something he masterfully reversed later), the ones picked for this book manage to avoid that trap for the most part.It is a definite recommendation. Buy the book for its great content. If you don't want to risk it, then go read the author's webcomics first and then buy it to support his work.

Me: I'm not sure if we should really be writing a review. Makes me nervous we'll be judged on our opinion.LIFE: Oh stop being such a big baby! I'm judging you right now and I still say you're lame!Me: jeez ok. I think this is one of those books that can show you just how life ca-LIFE: IT'S AWESOME!Me: will you let me finish?LIFE: you're too slow!Me: anyway. It shows you the many sides of life while giving you a smile in return. There is so much to relate to in this book that I think it deserves the 5 stars. Definitely worth getting!LIFE: AND IT STARS YOURS TRULY! WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?!

Owlturd Comix have brought much joy in difficult times of my life. Andrew Tsyaston's comics are both funny and poignant. His main character, Shen, is an inspiration. He keeps fighting against all odds and never loses hope. The book smells nice, too! ^.^ (refer to the photo)

Absolutely love the book and the artist. So grateful I pre-ordered this to be one of the first people to actually have it. Well worth the money. Looking forward to see many more things that Shen creates. Very very proud of you keep going. You have a lovely following. I know all of us who have followed you on webtoons and other social media are grateful that you are a part of our lives.

I have to say I was more than pleasantly surprised to read this book.Every page held a new reaction for me, but most often it made me cackle. There are countless comics, each with well-drawn images and good humor.I've shared this with numerous people, and everyone enjoyed it.I highly recommend anyone to grab a copy, and I genuinely hope to see more books from Andrew Tsyaston in the future.

The art makes the heavy feelings seem like lighthearted balloons that we can poke fun at and enjoy. While also giving the opportunity to think about life feelings with serious intention, like how the emotion balloons are polluting my mental atmosphere. (Note: there is not a heavy presence of balloons in this book, I'm just really sticking to this balloon imagery)I look forward to when I can place this book on a coffee table for guests to lightly read, or in my bathroom for pooping reading material. I love your work, comic guy, keep it up!

Loved it. Loved the artist. Great book with things I had not seen on the IG. Had a lot of fun flipping through it with my wife and she’s not a super fan like me. She still enjoyed it a lot. Took it to work and have a lot of fun opening it up randomly on small breaks. Goes great with office life.

I enjoyed the way he depicted the emotions with humor. I shared it with adults, an eleven year old girls who had trouble regulating emotions and teenagers. I also shared it with another therapist who works with teens and she’s stll using it with her clients! It is not preachy and is easy to understand. It opened up communication about different feelings and how they affect the person. It is a good tool.

We have all the other bear books, so when I saw there was a new one out, I bought it right away. Like the others, it's very sweet and fun, with bright, happy illustrations. Bear and a friend take a trip to the mountains, and along the way we learn about time. Each page has the time of day written digitally, e.g., 7:00 am, and there is also a clock in each picture, e.g., Bear's alarm clock, showing the time in analog form. At the end of the book there's a detailed explanation of how to tell time.My boys are 4 years old now, but telling time with an analog clock is still a bit beyond them, though they try to understand it. Younger children might get even less out of that part of the book. But it's a nice story even if you ignore the time-telling aspect. There are different modes of transport shown (walking, bus, train, a bit of implied hiking from the train to the cabins, and sailing & climbing at the end). Bear's cat stays home, but a bee gets interested in a poster of the mountains at the train station and comes along on the trip. My kids wanted the book to be longer -- they wanted to hear more about Bear's vacation. At the end of the book it says "Bear wants to stay here forever and ever!" and that has become a catch phrase for us. A delightful book!

Bear is the best! This one has a telling time theme as a bonus. All the Bear books are amazing.

The preferred choice of books for our nearly 2 year old! The colors are great, good story, and the books are sturdy. His favorites are Bear About Town, and Bears Busy Family. But he does like all the series and is beginning to read because of them we believe. Our 5 year old who began reading at 2, reads these to our youngest as well and he still enjoys. Any Bear series is recommended by us.

So both of my kids love the bear books and this one especially. The rhythmic story along with bright pictures with lots to talk about in each picture makes this book a winner!

This is the newest addition to my baby boy's library which completes the collection. Bear's books have been his all time favorite since he started "reading" his first bear book "Bear's Birthday" around 10th month. Now he is 22 months and still loves these books. Vibrant colors, familiar scenes, and a lot of things to pick up for a growing mind at different stages. The quality of the board book is good, although I have done a few repairs already due to active daily use by my son. I will recommend this book and the whole series to everyone with a baby who just starts reading!

We got this book for my grandson's birthday. I am looking forward to reading the book to him.

My 3 year old loves this book! It is a great introduction to telling time, but also challenging, so will provide many opportunities to teach the concept.

After our children thoroughly loved the books in this entire series, we have repeated purchases of this book as gift for friends.

Review

“Throughout Still Waters the reader has the pleasure of the author as a teacher, guide, and raconteur. In the tradition of fine nature writing, Stager takes us on an illuminating tangent here and a thrilling side tripe there. Best of all, we get to be scientists with him, venturing out into the world armed with questions and returning home with a smattering of answers, plus a host of new questions to ask....Stager immerses us in the seductive and ever-changing currents of lives in general and the lives of lakes in particular.” - Ed Kanze, Adirondack Explorer“Lyrical...offers geological and biological revelations.” - Nature“Curt Stager is as fine a teacher as I have ever encountered, both in the classroom and on the page. You will learn something new in every paragraph of this book, and the vivid writing will make it stick in your brain. For those of us who love the planet's lakes, this is like a long, cool drink of the freshest water.” - Bill McKibben, author of Radio Free Vermont“Curt Stager is an eloquent storyteller. He not only guides us into the fascinating ecological worlds that dwell within lakes but also demonstrates that our own nature, both biological and cultural, cannot be understood apart from our many interconnections with these living waters.” - David George Haskell, author of The Songs of Trees and The Forest Unseen“Lakes reflect us both literally and metaphorically, in ways shallow and deep. We can see our faces as we peer into their surface. But more deeply, lakes also reflect how the world is changing. Curt Stager has written a deep book about lakes. He peers into deep time, letting lakes tell us what has been, as well as foretelling a bit about who we are becoming.” - Carl Safina, author of A Sea In Flames and Beyond Worlds: What Animals Think and Feel“Curt Stager takes his readers into the depths of ponds, lakes and seas around the globe―both polluted and pristine, ancient and nearly new―and brings alive the universe of life contained within each. Picking up the torch lit by Thoreau more than 150 years ago, Still Waters plumbs a question that vexes ecologists and philosophers alike―Can waters so shaped by human hands ever again be considered 'natural'? His conclusions will surprise as much as they entertain and educate.” - Dan Egan, author of The Death and Life of the Great Lakes“Authoritative.... For a primer on the ‘secret world’ of lakes and for surprising facts and speculations on the microscopic and macroscopic realms―all carefully assembled and presented―the book is an important contribution to understanding how lakes, beyond their singular beauty, are windows to our primal connections to all life.” - Kirkus“An outstanding work of nature and science writing that lingers long after the book is closed. Highly recommended.” - Library Journal (starred review)“This contemplative volume, both informative and poetic, makes good on Stager's intent to 'upgrade' Walden 'for our own century.'” - Publishers Weekly

Perhaps most enjoyable for those who are more interested in Mr. Stager, the author, than in his purported subject, lakes. "I" and "my" are everywhere, and eventually I just got a bit tired of constantly having to cut through the intermediary of the author in order to get to what I'd wanted in his book, a clear study of aspects of lakes. For many people, this may be worth the effort, since when you get there, the information is quite interesting. For me it was tiresome -- I kept thinking "Please get out of the way!!" I'm a big fan of Thoreau's WALDEN and especially his JOURNAL 1837-1861, where the author is obviously present but who constantly keeps the reader attuned to the extraordinary natural world rather than on himself as its reporter. We can't expect everybody to be another Thoreau, but after reading him, this was a big come-down. Read it if you have lots of time and the patience to sift through the self-reflecting surface of the writing and find the pith.

Most of us have had a relationship with one lake or another, but few understand what's happening below the surface, or what has happened to the lake in the past. Stager takes us to unique lakes, along the way dropping morsels of science that are as important as they are clearly presented -- in a single paragraph he provides understanding of complex phenomena without being technical or boring. Stager is not afraid to laugh at himself, which makes these accounts all the more personal and relatable. I'm especially struck by the scientific objectivity and the author's ability to see the real questions, and he clearly respects the value of good science. This book is a must-read for anyone who has seen a lake. Not only will it will change the way the reader sees lakes, it encourages us all to treasure these aquatic jewels for the marvels that they are.

The author can tell a good story, and he tells more than a few, and he provides an incredible amount of information about lakes and what we can learn about our environmental history from them. Definitely recommended.

Good science writing is hard to find - but here it is. The author nails it in this scientific yet entertaining look at lakes - not flinching from the future ahead for lakes in a time of climate change, but not being maudlin about it either.

As a frequent visitor to NY's Adirondack Park, I appreciated the insights the book offered not just on lakes in the Adirondack Park (couple of chapters touched on the region), but on various lakes globally, and the challenging environmental / economic balances that their local communities face. The relationship between humans and the environment can be a controversial subject, and the author handled some difficult topics fairly. The book presents very specialized information in an accessible manner which made it a very pleasant - and educational - read. I had no idea there were such things as “limnologists”, and that study of lakes was an actual field.

With a bit of travelogue tossed in, if that's what you are looking for. Starts with Walden Pondand builds from there, both scientifically and philosophically.

I loved this book. Beautifully and clearly written, carefully researched, and both moving and inspiring. A great read.

Review

"Parents, teachers, administrators and policy makers urgently need to understand what Wagner is telling us."―Clayton M. Christensen, author of Disrupting Class and The Innovator's Dilemma"I consider this book more of an experience than a read.... [Wagner] is a likely leader for the new era."―Washington Post"Tony Wagner is not just talking about our schools here--he is talking about the future of our nation. The Global Achievement Gap cuts through the complexity and partisan posing so often associated with this genre. It is a powerful call to action, and a roadmap of how to fundamentally rethink the education of our children. If we ignore it, we do so at great peril."―Keith R. McFarland, author of #1 Wall Street Journal and New York Times bestseller The Breakthrough Company: How Everyday Companies Become Extraordinary Performers"The Global Achievement Gap is thoughtful and inspirational.... This book will capture your head, your heart, and I hope, your future actions. This is a very important book for anyone who cares about preparing young people for success in a rapidly changing global society. Every school board member, administrator teacher, and parent in the nation should read this book."―Anne L. Bryant, Executive Director, National School Boards Association"Tony Wagner takes us deep inside the black box of school curriculum in a way very few authors have done. What do we mean by rigor? By 21st century skills? Wagner shows us concretely what thinking skills really are, how current approaches to 'raising standards' cannot get us there, and what will. Everyone concerned with American education should read this book."―Linda Darling-Hammond, Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education, Stanford University"Tony Wagner has managed to penetrate the jargon and over-simplified responses to the pervasive underachievement that exists among our students. He has charted an important new direction and given us a way to get there. This book deserves to be powerfully influential."―Mel Levine, author of A Mind at a Time"Tony Wagner argues persuasively that old ways of teaching are completely unsuited to new ways of working. The Global Achievement Gap should be grabbed by business leaders to guide a much-needed conversation with educators."―Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Harvard Business School professor, author of American the Principled and Confidence"This book is a 'must read' for the change agents in public education. Wagner presents a compelling case for rapid and urgent change in the present American education system."―Betty Burks, deputy superintendent, San Antonio Independent School District"The Global Achievement Gap is a lucid--and scary--book. It chronicles how policies that intend to improve our schools are actually shutting down their abilities to help students learn how to think. Parents, teachers, administrators and policymakers urgently need to understand what Wagner is telling us."―Clayton Christensen, professor, Harvard Business School, author of Disrupting Class"In The Global Achievement Gap, Tony Wagner offers a thoughtful analysis of where we are in American public education. (behind the times), and what we need to do to adapt to the future that is upon us. Drawing upon years of accumulated wisdom as a teacher, principal, trainer, and well-traveled observer of schools, Wagner builds a persuasive case for change in the way we approach schooling, grounded in the question: what does it mean to be an educated person in the 21st century?"―Dr. Richard C. Atksinson, president emeritus, University of California

The Global Achievement Gap by Tony Wagner is another in a series of recent books that present a critical view of American education. What Wagner and others decry is the failure of schools to teach what he calls “survival skills,” namely such things as critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork. Wagner is described on the back cover of the book as an “Expert in Residence at Harvard University’s Innovation Lab.” He claims that there are two achievement gaps in our education systems. The first is the gap between the quality of schooling that most middle-class students get and the quality available to poor and minority children. The second gap, and the one that is the primary focus of the book, is the global gap between even what our best schools are teaching and testing and what all students need to succeed as workers, learners and citizens in today’s global knowledge economy.Wagner posits seven “survival skills” that he says are necessary. These include:1. Critical thinking and problem solving2. Collaboration across networks3. Agility and adaptability4. Initiative and entrepreneurship5. Effective oral and written communication6. Accessing and analyzing information7. Curiosity and imagination. He discusses these shortcomings in detail and gives many examples. He states that there is an overemphasis on testing which leads teachers to teach to the test. Another problem is that the training future teachers get in education schools is not adequate to what is needed. This book is very valuable for parents, students and anyone interested in education—both in the United States and globally. It not only provides specific examples, it also gives sources and organizations that you can contact.

Very good book however not appropriately titled. It focused almost exclusively on America and not greatly in a method of comparison with the exception of discussion non the PISA exam. This, however, does not take away from the book or its content. The information is wonderful and absolutely relevant to the issues facing the school system today. He examines how the rote memorization and learning of intricate details of every single subject does not constitute true learning but rather a method of information ingestion that is forgotten immediately after the test. He shows how even some of the top schools in America have the same issues in the way they teach. However, he also explores numerous schools that are getting it right. Schools that are unconventional. They do not all have students getting perfect scores on standardized tests but the students are actually learning and their ability to grasp information more deeply leads to their ability to rationalize and compartmentalize as an adult. This is a must have for parents and educators who want to understand how the system fails kids and how they can overcome it.

The title pretty much sums up the book. I began reading this book over the summer. I was about 1/3 of the way through and decided to stop reading the book and return it to the library. Why? Because there was so much great content that I was spending more time writing out my notes than actually reading the book.I recently purchased the book for my iPad so I could highlight and type my notes. This proved a much more productive method(and lead me to a thought on education practices) and allowed me to not only take away key passages, but also allowed for fluid reading. There is so much great info in this book. As I currently help operate an online global project with 600+ elementary students, I found many things in this book to hold merit and raise valid questions about education. Combine this with my recent visit to High Tech High(which was included in the book) and not only understand the need for some change to education, but demand it to happen. The great thing is that change is happening.Essentially, the author discusses 7 Essential Survival Skills that all students need.Wagner presents seven "survival skills" that students should be learning in school in order to prepare for college and adult life:* Critical Thinking and Problem Solving* Collaboration Across Networks and Leading by Influence* Agility and Adaptability* Initiative and Entrepreneurialism* Effective Oral and Written Communication.* Accessing and Analyzing Information* Curiosity and ImaginationThroughout the book he examines how these skills are being taught on the global scale and how much America has fallen behind the ranks in these skills. What is so great about his rhetoric and writing style is that it is not an all out bash on American schools. Being a teacher myself I have read plenty where teachers are just ripped apart. He focuses more on where things are going wrong and providing examples of schools that are on the right path to making change. The skills shared here are all skills that everyone needs for whatever avenue of life they choose. Some parents and students are stuck in schools that they cannot escape. The great thing with these skills are that they can be taught at home.Staying current with the development and changes in education I think things are moving in the right direction. I teach at a fantastic school and we even realize that changes need to be made.I recommend this book to anyone who has an investment in education(which is pretty much everyone). You will walk away from this book with a better understanding of what is needed for our students and nation to get back to the top.I will be using my 23 pages of notes for future blog posts on education, but since this is a review of the book I will save those rants for another day. A must read education book.
