I finished reading this excellent book just this morning and felt compelled to share my thoughts on it. The book is truly excellent and important. I'd even call it ground breaking, as the excellent approach advocated herein by Larry Burns not only enables data developers to overcome the terrifying concept of "object relational impedance" but also enables us to exploit fully the original sage teachings of Dr. Codd, whose Relational Model for Database Management revolutionized Enterprise Data Management, even though it is even today little undertood. So, the book is very much more than just a primer on how to build the Agile Database. Rather, I'd credit the book with being an excellent overall and truly innovative approach to data modeling, management, and database design in a modern Information Technology environment.Data Modeling Rock Star Steve Hoberman introduced me to this work by Larry Burns when Steve was at our offices earlier this month delivering his excellent Master Data Modeling Class. In one of his modules on the use of Views, Steve mentioned this ground breaking work by Larry Burns. I got terribly excited, as the way Steve desribed Larry's approach was right in synch with thoughts that had been floating around in my mind for a long while relative to the effective exploitation of relational database technology(OK. I don't get out out much - - :-)) In any case, Larry's approach is truly brilliant. We can model our databases properly, in a normalized sense, from the start. Then we can exploit modern relational database technology through the intelligent usage of Views, Stored Procedures, Triggers, and Functions in order to facilitate alternative represenations of the data, security options, access patterns, and such. By so doing, we can be faithful to Dr. Codd's original concept of the three schema architecture for database and make our business users and application development colleagues happy at the same time. This is really great stuff. I strongly recommend Larry's excellent book to all interested practictioners.

The fundamental stored procedure and database view approach seems particularly important when one starts thinking about moving systems from standalone databases to "cloud" participation. His points seem to improve on Ambler who seemed to be the lone voice in the wilderness arguing for using RDBMS features invented after the 1980's.

The subtitle says it all -- How to build a successful application using agile without sacrificing data management". Larry Burns explains how to combine agile and databases based on his own first hand experience.In particular Chapter 9 is superb. Burns discusses techniques for encapsulating and abstracting physical database details so that a database is more amenable for application programming. The discussion in this chapter is the best that I've seen in any book. This chapter alone justifies the book.

You can tell this book is written by someone from the trenches of the agile/data management war. The key takeaway for me is that there are principles and practices to use to make sure the business benefits from software development projects. We need to change our mindset when there are agile developers who just want to code and not document including doing some initial design up front. Also we need to change if there are data professionals who are adamant on completing the detailed design before coding. Somewhere in the middle there is a balance which maximizes business benefit. There is a lot of intellectual property given away in this book in the form of analogies, principles, and advice. For example, the author's concept of a virtual data layer has immediate applicability in my current assignment.

Really like this book. I like the way that is it written. I found it easy to follow and informative.

Good to think about the infant.

Dr. Stern did an excellent job in describing human development that is empirically based. What has resulted is a questioning of Dr. Margaret Mahler's 1st and 2nd stages of development. Though Dr. Mahler's work is superb, her theory is derived from observation, whereas Dr. Stern utilized computer technology to research similar material consequently presenting a major contribution to the literature. Finally, his writing style is easy to read that all readers can benefit from, especially those who have or work with children. I recommend reading this book.

This book along with the works of Bowlby, Schore, Siegal, Ainsworth, Mains, and application by Bromberg are central for understanding of human attachment trauma.

I knew Dr. Daniel Stern and have been very interested in the interpersonal world of a child. His book was not easy reading but I learnt a lot.

As Expected

If we just take the position of a working hypothesis for the developing senses of the self, we find the need for higher order constructs, similar to attachment theory and psychoanalytic theory. What is different here is the organizing principle of the subjective sense of self. Subjective experiences per se, the sense of self-and-other are the basic building blocks in this phenomenological account of the self.Have you ever wished you could ask an infant what he is really thinking, feeling or wanting? It is in seeing what the infant is capable of doing (sucking, looking, etc.) that gives the answer, and the value of reporting and summarizing research on the development of the infant.Stern makes over 400 references to research findings to report consensus in the field and offers new possibilities, separate from any preconceived theoretical construct such as psychoanalytic theory. While it could be considered that Stern is only providing a report on developmental psychology, he is rather presenting an originary approach to psychology in general from an observational, phenomenological, non theoretical framework with implications for psychotherapy.Stern shows that from birth (or prior), infants experience becoming, the process (and result) of emerging organization: (1) Emergent Sense of Self. Infants experience an alive (felt) self while engaging the world. They experience the result (product) of forming relations between isolated experiences (invariances, or patterns) as well as the process itself. Emergent processes:a.) Amodal Perception: Stern reports how infants have an innate learning ability of Amodal (multimodal) Perception, to take information from one sensory modality and translate it into another sensory modality. There is an encoding multimodality which can be recognized in any of the sensory modes, from the sensory specific to the sensory generalizable. Amodal Perception may be the sensory form of analogy similar to the later ability of cognitive symbolization, and appears to allow assessment of the internal state of others. (See pp. 154 ff.)b.) Affects (the overarching mode of all modes): Werner (1948) proposed that amodal qualities that are directly experienced by the infant are Darwinian categorical affects (happy, sad, angry) mixed with other modes of color, sound, shape, etc.c.) Vitality Affects (in the presence of categorical and noncategorical): related to vital processes of life such as breathing, hunger, elimination, sleeping, coming and going of feeling, thoughts, sensations.d.) Mirror Neurons are know to contribute to primary intersubjectivity, affective resonance and imitation, if not empathy as well.Infants do construct relationship as well as perceive the directly due to perception of invariant qualities (e.g., face, voice) related to mother, etc. The infant experiences organization through amodal perception and constructionistic efforts as well.(2) Sense of a Core Self: (2-7 mos.) which includes a.) Self agency (volition) b.) Self-coherence: 1.) Unity of locus; 2.) Coherence of motion; 3.) Coherence of temporal structure; 4.) Coherence of intenwsity structure; 5.) Coherence of form. c.) Self-continuity"The matching of caregiver behavioral variations and infant predelictions gives the infant the optimal opportunity to perceive those behavior invariants (adaptive oscillators) that identify self or other." (p. 73) Invariance (repeatability, p. 80) is the crucial experiential condition under which the infant becomes able to encode a predictable self, and a predictable other. Invariance yields a self, and an other. Memory itself becomes the invariant due to encoding that permits recognition (re-"cognition," nonvariance).One of the foundations of Stern's approach to self is "There are never emotions without a perceptual context. There are never cognitions without some affect fluctuations . . . . An episode [episodic memory, island of consistency] appears to enter into memory [encoding] as an indivisable unit." (p. 95). What gets encoded episodically are not specific memories, but generalized: 1)experience, 2) intuition schema, and 3) imagining capacity--a Sense of a Core Self.(3) Sense of a Core Self with Other (9 mos. and up)a.) Self regulating of the infant for attachment, security, arousal, activation, pleasure, physical gratification, self-esteem (atunement, p. 138 ff.)b.) Self-resonatingc.) Being with: self in presence of other, physical and psychological proximity and individuation (evoked companion. p. 111)d.) Family triad(4) Verbal self (1 year and up)The use of words not only gives the child increased ability of cognition, generalization and identification, but also responsibility to the parent and society's demands. When children begin using words, adults usually become less personal, more abstract, more demanding and more alienating (p. 163). Children use words as an adjunct while adults believe in words, and the imbedded demandsBecoming verbal leads to 1) The objective view of self; 2) Capacity for symbolic play; 3) Use of language and new ways of being with and of being divided between the verbal and nonverbal.(5) Narrative self (3 years and up)Our autobiographical history told to ourself and to others, constructional autobiography as told to us by family. There are cultural enactments and filters affecting our self from subgroups of society, kin-groups and our family per se.The final part of the book is devoted to implications for psychotherapy, which are profoundly affected by research presented so far, and by Stern's own research which focused on process, the now, what he called the "microanalytic interview," assessing a client's instant-by-instant lived experience at any given time. He asserted that phenomenologically we only live in the present moment, and he applied that to his psychotherapy systematically. His work integrates no less than psychotherapy, developmental psychology, anthropology and psychoanalysis.Postlogue: Stern's findings have been updated and corroborated this year in The Birth of Intersubjectivity: Psychodynamics, Neurobiology, and the Self (The Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology) by Ammaniti and Gallese. However these authors still cling to psychodynamic theory which misses the seminal and phenomenological work of Stern.

Highly recommended as a first or intermediary book about the makings of the first A-bombs. It gives a birds-eye view of the early theoretical discoveries, the experimental beginning, the project itself, the deployment and the aftermath. In the last chapters the horrors really comes alive. The impact on the victims, the scientists and the geopolitical reasons for "dropping the bombs" (an atrociously understated phrase).The author never gets in the way of the story. I wished for more character detail and less bomb production details and extensive name dropping. More of a human story with a bomb in it, than a bomb with 130,000 anonymous project participants. But the book is clearly described as a project presentation so I'm not complaining. I really like the smaller format, it's not bloated. Some new and valuable insights and realizations, and an appreciated update as the book was recently published. Way under-prized, maybe because of poor editing and typos. An important book, or at least some chapters, for 10th-12th graders and young adults (me being a retired senior enjoyed it immensely).**** spoiler warning **** **** spoiler warning ****Hilarious events and statements by the scientists made me laugh out load. One scientist did last minute tinkering with the bomb using a dentist's drill! Some last pieces of the test bomb was put in place using scotch tape. A soldier was posted unarmed, to "guard the test bomb", sitting 30 feet up in the air on a chair. Army sleeping mattresses to protect the bomb from damage if it fell down. Many more...

Highly informative. Enjoyed it immensely. Mr. Cimino greatly helped me realize just what a massive undertaking this was. The relationship between General Groves and Oppenheimer may never again be duplicated, they put aside their vast differences in philosophy to get the bomb built, in today's world it's hard to picture that happening.

Good book, but mainly from a scientific end. Not much about the individual scientists that worked on the bombs or detail of the bomb design. More about refining uranium and plutonium into weapons grade stock.

This book unmasks the background of the atomic bomb, from the first steps of developing the technology for using nuclear energy for massive destruction to a bit about the last two tests by the US. I found it to be illuminating because I already knew bits and pieces, but now I feel like I have a better idea of the whole story. I think that this is a good companion to "The Girls of Atomic City" because it completes the story.

After living in New Mexico all my life, I finally chose to read The Manhattan project. What a piece of important history! What an undertaking it was to build the atomic bombs! What destruction! Important to read!

Very good read, but focuses on the How not the Who. Claiming that Japan was ready to surrender before the HIroshima bomb was drop is speculation not fact.

Thoroughly enjoyed. I am not a physicist, so the simpler explanations of the science were easier to understand. The story's characters, illustrations and photos brought the telling into focus. The inter-weaving of war, politics and objective--end the war --are defined.A good introduction to an important tale.

Book is a good concise overview of technical and political aspects of Manhatten Project. Good but lacks concise summary data on actual size and scope of project in terms of cost, people employed, contractors used, land consumed and timeline from start in 1942 to completion in 1945. A truly amazing feat of science and engineering.

And his view on it, coming from what you might think is just a pure analytical, mathematical perspective, is at the same time surprising and alluring. If you read nothing else from the book but the hot hand chapter, it is already worth the money.And every chapter is like that. He gained notoriety by being the first physician to admit publicly that he assisted individuals suffering from painful or debilitating illnesses to die peacefully. Always a controversial figure, some called him "Dr. Death," while others viewed him as a noble humanitarian. After assisting in the suicides of more than a hundred persons, he was convicted of second-degree murder and the unlawful delivery of a controlled substance and sentenced to ten to twenty-five years in prison. After serving more than eight years of his sentence, he was released in 2007 on parole for good behavior.

Very nice book about one of my favorite subjects in Medical Ethics

Its a horrible "reprint" which is just like a cheap photocopy.

Awesome book

I expected more explicit information, and was disappointed to find out that it was an effort to persuade the public to pass laws allowing prisoners to donate their bodies to medicine.

My curiousity told me to read this, and I was amazed at the depth of it all (and knowing that is was illegal). The human mind is a scary thing!

The person I gave it to as a 60th birthday present hasn't taken the hint yet. Perhaps I need to buy another one of Dr. K's books for further encouragement. Remember, once the window of opportunity to leave with dignity is closed, it is closed forever.

``Dr. Death'' got his start with campaigns to allow death row inmates to donate their organs (currently organ donation is impossible). If you take a heart, a liver, two kidneys, two corneas, and bone marrow from a willing donor with a known execution date, and you can save quite a few lives with his death.It's common-sense arguments like these, not grisly death-obsession, that makes this book worth reading. I expect that some readers will find the sections on euthanasia distasteful, but the subject is handled carefully and smartly.For all his faults, Kevorkian is a strong and articulate voice who is too often written off automatically as a crank and a murderer. Read this book in order to balance your perspective, then judge him if you wish.

Dr. Jack Kevorkian's 1991 book advocating voluntary medical experimentation on, and organ donation from, death row inmates and assisted suicide patients is written in a clear, lucid, and intelligent manner. Kevorkian argues why euthanasia-- given the right controls-- should be legal and available to terminally ill and suffering patients. Anybody who thinks this man is a nutcase will change his or her mind after reading this well-thought out book. He also makes us look at our own knee-jerk reactions to certain issues regarding death and see how irrational they are. The world needs more brilliant minds like Dr. Jack Kevorkian.
