What an amazing book! I am so much in awe of the research that went into writing this book. I have read a lot about pre-War Shanghai, especially about Emily Hahn and her friends, but this book covers so much new territory. The writing is vivid and the characters memorable. It does take work to remember all the names, but it is well-worth the effort to understand the chaos and crime and corruption that passed for everyday-life in Shanghai. I very much enjoyed this book, both for its look at history and its insights on human nature. You will enjoy this!

Although a fascinating expose of underworld Shanghai, the book felt redundant and airless after awhile, without a character-driven hub or any emotional momentum to sustain interest. The imposition of Yiddish was an odd way to bring Jewish-ish gangsters to life (‘ish’ because there was no religious practice by the lead thugs). The story of a decadent seedy international crime scene dominating pre-war Shanghai- with disenfranchised Jews & Russian emigres - could’ve been told in half the time.

This book has lots of characters, almost all engaged in shady activities. It's a fun read. I think the quote in the book from Josef von Sternberg on Shanghai is a perfect summation: "There always has to be some place where the world sweeps its dirt and refuse."The story of Shanghai during the years leading up to World War II is well written and fast moving.

Having thoroughly appreciated French's Midnight in Peking, I had high hopes for City of Devils and, for the most part, was not disappointed. Both books are fastidiously researched and well populated with fascinating characters. Two criticisms: 1. Unfortunately, the narrative style borrows that of pulp fiction, to cheapening effect. The slang is so outdated as to be silly. 2. Although two maps are provided, neither indicates the many districts or neighborhoods within Shanghai to which French refers continually. These maps are reproductions of old, historical documents. They are much-reduced, rendering street names barely legible. In a subsequent edition, what would be useful would be a redrawn map, with places such as The Settlement, French Town, the Chinese town, and Hongkew clearly delineated, and flags or stars or other markers indicating the locations of the many casinos, bars, and nightspots.Despite these criticisms, it's a gripping story, and, as at least one other reviewer has commented, it would make an excellent mini-series on Amazon Prime, Netfix, or another streaming service.

This book would make a great Amazon mini-series. It’s a great look at the underbelly of society, you can smell the filth and feel the bugs. The characters suck you into the ooze of Shanghai’s underworld. The major drawback of this book is the repetition, the descriptions go on too often from previous chapters. It was a fun read and exposed another world that really appears in “historical” works.

The real value of this book to me was the vivid description of pre-WW II Shanghai. I accept that there are enough valid sources to make the "who, what, when, and where" of the book accurate. The author made the book a fun read by inventing enough dialogue and detail to add human interest to the outlines of this true story.

I enjoyed this book a lot. The history is sensationalized in a kind of breathless and pulp-fiction-ish tone that I found distracting sometimes, but which gave guilty pleasure nonetheless. This book illustrates in a little vignette a crucial and overlooked period of China’s humiliating encounter with the West - the nadir of that encounter, perhaps, and so it provides a base for understanding China’s rise and the flavor of that rise today.

The author describes a period, which is particularly fascinating. The diverse members, many rogues, are described in breathtaking detail. The Chinese population was not totally ignored but definitely not in the foreground. I believe the reader would have benefited from greater balance. Still the book warrants reading for those who would like to have a better understanding of the period.

I found this book to be oddly fascinating the way a true crime book is fascinating. Not because it is about the Madoffs, but because it gives a glimpse inside the head of the author who represents herself to be a fully functioning adult but seems completely unaware just how undeveloped and immature she is -- like a really bad teenager. It is almost impossible to believe she wrote the stuff she was thinking and put it in a book. Everything is about her and her needs. She has little to no empathy for anyone and thinks it is appropriate and justified to lash out and dump vitriol on everyone around her. Her disgust for Bernie Madoff we could understand -- but her temper tantrums and misguided jealousy are present way before the scandal ever broke. She is adamant in being furious with and irritated by her husband's ex-wife Susan, her stepchildren, her brother-in-law, Andy, his girlfriend, Andy's ex-wife and Ruth and Bernie before Bernie's confession ever takes place. It made me feel sorry for all the people on the receiving end of her garbage. One of the most (of many) disturbing scenes of her screaming diatribes comes after her husband's suicide when she calls Susan (Mark's ex-wife) and berates her for having Ruth (Mark's mom) at her house to comfort her (and Mark's) children who have just lost their father. What?I don't understand the people who think this is a beautiful love story or a story about redemption or anything positive. This book doesn't have anything to do with love.

Stephanie is obviously not very likable, as others have noted. But I am basing my review on the book itself not on her personality. The book is a good, easy read. Stephanie's anger is understandable, but probably not completely rational at times. It seems like she was pretty mean and nasty towards members of her husband's family even long before Bernie was arrested. I understand her pain and anger towards the Madoffs to an extent, but her husband ultimately made a very selfish, stupid decision to end his life and leave his four children without their dad. This is a very sad story, without any real resolution or sense of peace at the end.

While I found it to be a very interesting read, I couldn't help but wonder how the author & her husband were allowed to keep 3 multi million dollar properties. Yes, it seemed that the husband didn't have anything to do with the ponzi scheme, but one has to wonder if the other trading firm - which he ran, could have existed without the millions of dollars pumped into the other company through ill gotten gains. You can't really feel bad for her, as it doesn't seem that the author has ever had to work & even after the collapse of the company, she's still out taking surfing lessons in Nantucket whiles 100s of other people and charities are left penniless. The other thing that struck me is that she expected Ruth Madoff to abandon her husband of 50 years for her sons, but had no problem writing him letters in jail. It's horrible what happened to her & that her husband killed himself, but the only people you really can feel bad for are his children. She comes across as a spoiled, bitter woman & you can't really feel bad for her. I purchased the book for $0.01 on Amazon. It is a really quick read, I read it in 1 day, so if you want it, do yourself a favor & get it from the library or buy it from a reseller.

After reading Diana Henriques' fabulous "Wizard of Lies," I was interested in the extended family's perspective of Bernie Madoff's terrible crimes. I wasn't expecting the tenor of this recitation by Bernie Madoff's former daughter-in-law, Stephanie Madoff Mack. Ms. Mack was married to Bernie Madoff's son Mark. The book recounts her life with Mark and the Madoff family before, during and after the Madoff scandal. Tragically, her husband committed suicide two years after the Ponzi scheme came to light, leaving her to parent two young children on her own. Her anger toward Bernie Madoff is white hot and absolutely understandable. What was harder for me to understand as the reader was how seemingly petty and jealous Ms. Mack came across toward others in the Madoff family, including her husband's ex-wife, Susan, her brother-in-law Mark Madoff, his girlfriend, Ruth Madoff (probably for good reason), and a whole host of others, including some snide remarks about her step-children. Additionally, although the author is not a professional writer, the quality of writing was not good, and seemed petty at times. Ms. Mack has a compelling story to tell, but I don't think it came across effectively in this book.

As a daughter who lost her suicidal mother at 16 and suicidal father at 26 I understand the void and the survival mode. This book has opened my wounds and while reading it I know it's 100% truth because it's also how I feel. The anger, denial, acceptance, depression, bargaining that just keeps circling. This is a true story, humiliating to the writer, not meant to glorify herself but only to try to heal and expose her side. A chronic non healing ulcer. Like mine. Sorry for your loss. Hope we have the strength to just keep swimming specially for our children.

This series of books was ery interesting for me. I wish that they were numbered so that i could have read them in order. This volume covers several different kinds of foods served with noodles or in wrappers, how they were developed and what could be done to change them up a bit. Just because it has noodles and broth, it doesn't mean it's ramen, and the variety of ingredients in Gyoza can be surprising. These books also have an engaging story that goes along with it, giving some meaning behind all the restaurant visits. This is not just a restaurant review or foodie guide. This series actually follows peoples lives, how good food can alter how you think about things, and how different preparations of the same type of food can change what you think is considered good food. I would have given this series 5 stars but for not being able to tell what order to read them in. You do not need to read the entire series of books if you are only intereseted in a certain title. Each volume has a small intro section to introduce the characters and let you know what is going on.

This is an amazing series. All of the volumes in this series are collections, so the timeline will jump around a bit, but they're centered around the food theme for each one. This is Ramen and Gyoza for example so it's about Ramen and Gyoza. The times in the series they talk about it are not contiguous, so that's the reason for the time skips. But at the same time it makes these a bit individually readable since you're not looking at a continuous storyline.

I started reading the first book. Accurate. Entertaining. Typical Japanese style anime.By the second chapter I wanted to give this to my pseudo sophisticate "associates"! This series is a great guide to understanding different foods, how and why the food should taste and the difference between preparation and presentation for a Japanese perspective.Fun read, a learning experience reading right to left; back to front from western practice. The illustrations are good, the culinary information is PRICELESS. And it's so accessible. I really appreciate a book that is great on so many levels, educational, entertaining and thoroughly fun!!

I love ramen. This is the book that turned me on to the series. It gives me a different level of understanding of the culture and ingredients behind ramen. Definitely a worthwhile and fun read if you like eating quality ramen. This book is not about the cheap instant type ramen.

Excellent treatment of market risk. Clearly written and easy to follow along, including the exercises.

This book is required by my professor. It look good, and the structure is clear. However, the fomulas which should be expressed in a simple way is a little difficult for us to make sense.

The author expertly balances rigor with clarity and makes even more advanced models easy to understand. The coverage is great for a relatively short text and end of chapter questions with full solutions available from a website making truly understanding the models accessible. I own the first edition and second edition and would welcome a third edition. Great text that works at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels for those in Master's and PhD programs.
