This book totally lived up to my hopes. The recipes are easy and mostly quick to prepare, and all the ones I've tried have been very tasty. For each one, the authors explain what it does from a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective (e.g., strengthens the kidneys, drains dampness) and which health issues you can use it for (e.g., losing weight, or recovering from illness). You can use the index to look for a recipe by ingredient or by health issue. They also give you variations on each recipe. I have even made up my own recipes based on the information/ingredients presented in the book.Ancient Wisdom, Modern Kitchen is written from the perspective that food = nutrition = medicine. You can enjoy it simply as a cookbook of East Asian dishes, or as a component in a healthier lifestyle (the recipes are mostly quite low fat and feature lots of veggies, herbs, and whole grains), or as therapeutic for specific conditions.The only drawback--and this isn't a problem with the book but with trying to eat an Asian-style diet in the USA--is that some of the ingredients can be hard to source and rather expensive. The authors do their best to help by giving you pictures of ingredients that may be unfamiliar, as well as showing their names written in Chinese so you can recognize them from the packaging. I happen to live in a city without a good Asian market though, and have found it difficult to get some of the herbs locally. They can be ordered online, but some (like ginseng) can be really pricey. However, this is your health we're talking about, so it's up to you whether that's worth the cost. Most of the recipes can be made without hard-to-obtain ingredients and they'll still be tasty food, albeit maybe not as medicinal. I just gradually add things to my pantry, one at a time.For Westerners who might be wondering how these Asian medicinal ingredients will taste, the ones I've been able to get my hands on have been mild and pleasant tasting. I routinely add astragalus root, jujubes (Chinese red dates), maitake and/or shiitake mushrooms, pearl barley (Job's tears), and goji berries to my soups and stews now, and no one who has tried them thinks there is anything weird about the taste. I think they add good flavor, but in a subtle and not overpowering way. Ginseng is also very tasty. If you already like Chinese, Japanese, or Korean food I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I am a licensed acupuncturist and practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and I prescribe various recipes from Ancient Wisdom, Modern Kitchen. My patients love the recipes and information as much as I do. Food is medicine, and the first part of the book describes different foods' qualities and healing properties. The pattern differentiation of each recipe reflects the individualized treatment strategies used in Chinese Medicine. The miso tahini green bean recipe is one of my favorite dishes ever, and I make it at least 1-2x/week in the warmer months. I just ordered a few copies for wedding gifts. Yuan Wang and Warren Sheir were 2 of my favorite teachers at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, and having this resource allows their teaching presence to remain in my life.

I have had this book about 3 weeks now and I decided to write a review to encourage people to take a leap and buy it! The recipes are delicious! What I like best are the mineral-rich broths, and that they use the soaking liquids in the recipes. For lunch today, I had Cool-as-a-Cucumber Salad, Terrific Tofu and Mushrooms, Seaweed-Sweet Potato Simmer, and brown rice. I could not get anything that good at any Chinese restaurant I know of. I have also made and recommend: Vitality Fish Soup, Flu Season Soup, Mushroom Brown Rice, Move-the-Qi Daikon Salad (great with added mung sprouts), Outstanding Oatmeal, Meditative Mint, Ginger, and Tangerine Tisane, Immunity Building chicken stock, and the Togarichi Topping. If you like Oriental food, this is a somewhat different approach with great results! Thanks to the authors for their thorough work.

I was fortunate to have Yuan Wang, one of the authors, as one of my teachers. This cookbook is exactly what I would expect from such a great instructor. The directions are very clear. The recipes are quite simple and delicious. As a practitioner of Chinese Medicine, I appreciate the information regarding the properties of each dish. It's very nice to see the Japanese uses, as well. I've made several dishes from this cookbook and all have been delicious and very easy to prepare. I highly recommend this cookbook for the lay person as well as practitioners of Chinese or Japanese style medicine.

I am a practitioner of Chinese medicine who has had long time interest in food therapy. This book, not only presents therapeutic recipes for healing, but they are also very easy to make and tasty! I recommend this book to my patients and they have had nothing but positive remarks! Other Chinese medicine cookbooks in comparison use ingredients that are almost impossible to obtain in the West. These recipes and commentary make cooking in a Chinese manner easy and fun, and above all teach you how to integrate herbs and other tricks to heal your body and soul.

I'm really enjoying this book. The title fits perfectly. You can look up a disease in the back of the book and it will give you the page number for different recipes that help that disease. Easy to read, lists ingredients and directions for cooking. Have fun with the book and on your trip to an Asian market :)

Great book! five plus stars......the only thing more I would want in such a book would be Western equivalents for substitution of any or all foreign food items. I love foreign foods! But realistically if you do not live where they are easily obtained, Western substitutions are necessary to be cost effective and useful. Some are given but more choices would be helpful .....more and bigger pictures too!

This is a book about all that can go wrong with the human body when it’s exposed to the most extreme conditions possible—including places where no human can survive without the benefit of modern technology. The medical science provides plenty of tidbits of fascinating food for thought, but it’s the stories of survival (or, sometimes, the lack thereof)—many of which the author, Kenneth Kamler, M.D., was present for—that make this a gripping non-fiction read.There are only six chapters, addressing survival in the jungle, on the high seas, in the desert, underwater (diving), high in the mountains, and in space. There’s also a prologue that sets up the book with examples from Dr. Kamler’s experiences at high elevation (specifically Mount Everest.) Each chapter is full of illuminating stories about the threats to human life that exist in all of the aforementioned environments. The author is a hand surgeon who made a secondary specialization through expeditions to extreme environments to deal with the maladies that are largely unknown to the average person’s day-to-day existence—from pulmonary edema to exotic Amazonian parasites. A few of the chapters feature mostly stories of Kamler’s own experiences. These include the chapters on the jungle, deep-sea diving, and high altitude climbing. For other chapters Dr. Kamler draws together fascinating cases of survival and perishment in extreme environments such as living in a life raft on the high seas.Besides considering what might kill you in extreme places, this book also reflects upon a couple of other interesting tangential questions. First, what adaptations (cultural or physical/genetic) do the locals have who live at or near these extremes that allow them to live? A fascinating example of this seen in the explanation of how Sherpas of the Himalayas differ from the Andean Indians who live at high elevations in terms of their biological adaptations to elevation. These two peoples living under similar conditions share some common adaptations, but other adaptations are quite different. On a related subject, Kamler also looks at what adaptations other species have developed to allow them to be so much more successful in some extreme environments (e.g. seals in water.)Second, the role that x-factors like belief and will to survive play are never shunted aside as irrelevant anomalies by the author. Kamler devotes an epilogue to the subject of will to survive. Dr. Kamler was at one of the camps above base camp on the day of the 1996 Everest tragedy in which 12 perished. Kamler saw and advised on the treatments of Beck Wethers and other severely frostbitten climbers. Wethers’s story is particularly fascinating as he lay freezing in the snow overnight in a blizzard, apparently snow blind—though it later turned out to be an altitude related problem with an eye surgery (radial keratotomy)—before climbing to his feet and shambling into the wind (his only guide to where the camp might be.) Kamler considers the science of how Wethers neurons might have fired to get him to his feet against what seems like impossible odds, but concedes there’s much we don’t understand about what separates survivors from those who succumb.I found this book to be fascinating and would recommend it to anyone interested questions of what a human is ultimately capable of. If you’re interested in medicine, biology, or survival, you’ll likely find this book engaging.

With a chapter apiece for intro, jungle, open seas, underwater, desert, high altitude, space and a conclusion, Dr. Kenneth Kamler touches on both the physiological and the psychological; the former, concretely, specifically, and most impressively, clearly. The latter, he covers in a more theoretical way, one man’s belief at how and why the brain can have such profound effect on the body, when precedent and science say otherwise, such as in the case of Beck Weathers getting up from a hypothermic coma, in high altitude, despite all reason.I have to admit, I read the chapters out of order (sacrilegious, I know, though I did go back and hit the ones I started with in their appropriately sequential location) and I’m glad I did, but that’s mostly due to personal comfort levels. I find the concept of pulmonary edema (high altitude) interesting; whereas a discussion of tunga flies (jungle) and cannibalism (open seas) might have had me balking too early to finish.The book is occasionally hilarious, often disturbing, more than often disgusting, and there’s a few lines in the conclusion of the jungle chapter that read a little uncomfortably like a noble savage schtick, though generally speaking Dr. Kamler remains both interested and respectful.He is both scientist and storyteller. Being the former myself, I would have preferred the book skewed more in that direction, but each chapter holds a healthy amount. More often, it reads as a series of short stories—true, in all cases—of stranded adventurers and their survivals or ends, accordingly. That he includes both makes each story a potential surprise, and he explains the ‘why’ in a generally respectful, informative way.Overall, I found the book to feel both authentic and interesting. A book I would definitely pick up again...though I may skip the jungle chapter and its tunga flies...

Surviving the Extremes by Kenneth Kamler, M.D., is full of both riveting and interesting stories of the survival of the human body and how it adapts to and overcomes (and sometimes fails to overcome) extreme conditions. The book itself has six chapters stressing survival stories in the jungle, on the high seas, in the desert, underwater, at high altitude, and in outer space. Each chapter includes an amazing story of survival (and sometimes the lack of) paired with an analysis of the biological responses that each individual experienced. There is an apparent theme of the wonder of the human body and its survival capabilities. However, there is also an emphasis on the “x-factors” that play an important role in survival. Specifically, Kamler stresses the so-called “will to survive” and how it was solely responsible for the survival of Beck Weathers in the Everest Tragedy of 1996. Simply put, this is a fun read. The stories are utterly gripping and the explanations are exceptionally interesting and educational. I personally loved the book because of Kamler’s narrative ability to combine his scientific knowledge with exhilarating stories that push the human body to its limits. The educational elements would that appear in this book make it an excellent choice for any anatomy-related course or for anyone interested in the limits of the human body.

I will never again take for granted what Christ did for me, for us, on the cross. I highly recommend it for anyone searching for a deeper relationship with Christ.

This book was beyond amazing. I have Henry Blackaby's other books: Experiencing the Resurrection, Experiencing the Holy Spirit, Experiencing God, and Holiness. Believe me when I see these are books that truly inspire and encourage you to draw closer to the Lord.

Of all the books for an upcoming series on the cross, none has been as concise and yet comprehensive as Blackaby's. Hey rights as a pastor – theologian taking us to deep doctrinal depths and then making application to every day life.

I'm the kind of guy who hates to mark up his books and seldom does, but this book is so full of the precious and incisive comments so typical of Henry Blackaby that I underlined bunches of things in it. When my wife decided that the book was just what another family member needed for what they were going thru, I made a written note of all of the things I had marked, bought a second copy from Amazon (our first copy had been a gift) and marked the same things in that one.

About the Author

Patricia Weaver is a parent of a son with autism. Her passion is her current job as the Program Director of the SDC, working with these adults as they continue to learn skills, explore and develop talents and help them connect with their peers in a facilitated recreation center. The story was great but the ending was horrible. Atleast this story wasn't as rushed and skipped parts like most of Emma's stories do. However the ending was absolutely horrendous. Clark was a selfish jerk. His actions at the end were unforgivable IMO. For Katy and Dawson to just forgive and forget is part of the "sweet ending" garbage that was pushed in these stories but certainly not believable. I don't want to spoil it for anyone although seriously you would probably thank me if I did. There's too many things to mention that made Clark unlikeable man that had no honor or integrity. Let me just say poor Katy to lose the darling baby she loved and cared for but of course the author didn't mention Katy's loss because of the overly sweet "lets just brush over the jerkiness" of Clark at the end for a lovely darling ending made this unbelievable and happy I didn't have to pay too much for this story. However I think I won't bother with Emma's stories for now on. I read one that jumped around and was way too short and brushed over a lot of stuff. Now here's this one that was completely wasted with a very bad ending.

Katy occupies herself cleaning and caring for the house and the orphaned infant. Not knowing whether Dawson was dead or alive leaves Katy worrying about her future.A great read that I thoroughly enjoyed and read in one sitting. I just couldn't put it down needing to know the fate of the infant or if Dawson would be found.a lovely storyline with enjoyable characters. I would easily recommend this book to others as well.

A young lady whose Uncle as trying to get her inheritance by marrying her off to a man she couldn't stand. While on the train a woman went into labor and did leaving the child with the girl s they were going to the same stop. A must read for those who enjoy historical western romance kindle books from Amazon at a special price and from a delightful author who keeps me entertained throughout the entire book before putting it down. A very event filled book.

This is a story about a young woman ,after losing her family , strived to find a new family. It has a very happy ending after several weeks of problems. It is a story you won't want to put down until you finish your it.

I enjoyed this book! Such a spunky heroine new to the west, a surly yet soft-hearted hero, thrown together by unusual circumstance, shortly before Christmas. I like that Katy is no shrinking violet. A well suited couple.

I like how she wrote about assumptions, worries, and not giving up. Faith and two strangers doing what is right. It could have been a longer story with more details, but the ending was a surprise.

Every American community has its history of lawlessness. The History Press has published a series of about 100 books with "Wicked" as the first word of the title and a community as the second word exploring colorful, outside the law elements in a community's past. Albuquerque, New Mexico is a prime subject for a book about early wickedness. New Mexico did not become a State until 1912, giving Albuquerque, its largest city, a long territorial past rife with opportunities for mischief. In his book, "Wicked Albuquerque" (2017), Cody Polston, a local historian, ghosthunter, and student of the paranormal explores flamboyant stories of lawlessness in Duke City. Polston's book covers a broad time period beginning with Civil War Albuquerque, continuing through the "Wild West", Old Town Albuquerque, New Town Albuquerque, and 20th Century history in a discussion of nuclear mishaps and the Rosenberg espionage case.The term "wicked" calls to mind stories of shady ladies and houses of ill fame, and in this expectation Polston's book does not disappoint. As a growing, remote Western city, Albuquerque offered ample opportunity for the oldest profession, both in old Albuquerque, prior to 1880 and in the new post-1880 Albuquerque which relocated following the coming of the railroad. Polston tells the story of Lizzie McGrath, known as the "Lilly of Copper Avenue" and of her two successful brothels. Polston also describes "Hell's Half Acre" in new Albuquerque which flourished after 1885. In addition to many brothels, Hell's Half Acre's vices included flourishing opium dens. Polston tells the story of both the brothels and the dens with gusto. His account makes good use of photographs and of quotations from contemporary sources.Polston's book also tells the story of one Park Van Tassel and of his efforts beginning in 1882 to promote hot air ballooning in Albuquerque. Part entrepreneur and part charlatan, Van Tassel's 1882 efforts nearly ended in tragedy but drew the city in. Van Tassel's subsequent efforts combined ballooning with parachuting and resulted in world-wide interest and, ultimately, the death of Van Tassel's wife. Albuquerque and hot air ballooning became forever intertwined and the city holds an annual ballooning festival, with the upcoming festival scheduled for October, 2018. Polston tells the story of Van Tassel and ballooning with verve and again enhances his account with contemporary sources and photographs.There are many other good stories in the book, including the adventures of Milt Yarberry and Elfego Baca, desperados who straddled both sides of the law. Polston's story of Albuquerque's "Wayward Priest", Padre Jose Gallegos, also figures in Willa Cather's famous novel, "Death Comes for the Archbishop".The portions of the book set before and after Albuquerque's territorial period, while including interesting material, seem out of place in a story of wickedness. The former material consists of a brief account of the Civil War in Albuquerque. War is wicked but a story of the Civil War in Albuquerque does not equate to a story of specific wickedness. On the more contemporary part of the book, Polston's account of nuclear misadventures shows more of accident than wickedness. His account of the Rosenberg case is brief and out of place in a book such as this, but it does include valuable first-hand sources on the executions of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg."Wicked Albuquerque" offers an entertaining look at the bawdy, early history of an American community. It would have been even more entertaining and cohesive with more focus on territorial days. The book is enhanced by its use of original source material and includes a good bibliography. When it comes to compilation history or nonfiction books/series take them with a grain of salt. “Wicked_____”, and “Speaking Ill of the Dead: Jerks in _____” are two such series of books. While I cannot speak of their entire content, some chapters are beyond poorly researched.Some of these types of books are good. (New Mexico nonfiction) Books by Marc Simmons or Howard Bryan are quite excellent. Don Bullis too has great moments. Why? Because they’ve done extensive research their entire careers and specialized in certain areas.The other books (such as the Wicked series) seem to merely repeat the same stories, providing nothing new. Mostly a regurgitation of unverified or only partially factual information. Great on narrative and legend/myth, but wholly absent of hard facts.Put it this way. If you’ve spent years researching a particular event or person and read a chapter on said subject in Wicked Albuquerque,for example, you’ll see within probably the first page that they did not research well.Whilst reading my own copy of Wicked Albuquerque for research purposes I realized they hadn’t read or used a couple of very key books in their one research or they wouldn’t have wrote what they did. Or at least would have wrote it differently.These types of books are entertaining and can be a good starting point to draw one’s interest towards a subject, but that’s all they should be.I will admit that I’m torn when it comes many of these types of books. An example of which would be those Robert K. DeArment, specifically his “Deadly Dozen” series. The first volume is a book many who have written about early Albuquerque have used in their own research. Volume One was in fact the jumping off point in my researching endeavor (over three years ago) for writing the biography I am still working on. In those three years that chapter has become less and less relevant to the facts. Great leads for research! But, very little more than a reference point now. This is in fact what Wicked Albuquerque became for me within only a few paragraphs on the chapter I needed to read...merely consigned to the dusty Rarely Used section of reference material in my book's exponentially growing research bibliography, and personal library.It will be will be a fun read for many. Good stories and narrative. But if you know quite a good deal of one of the subjects from personal and long research, well, I'm willing to bet that ignorance is bliss, as they say.

I am a performer of magic. In 2006 Cody suggested I play the character of Milton J. Yarberry. He was Albuquerque's first "elected" sheriff, the only sheriff in the United States hanged for murder February 9, 1883. It has been a phenomenal experience for me. In addition to the Yarberry section of the book, (spot on, in my opinion), the book is filled with a fascinating look at the city's most wicked side. Polston pulls back the covers to reveal little known secrets and facts of Albuquerque's red light district, right in the middle of new town! Readers looking for a blend of wild characters, hidden history and some of the things that made Albuquerque quirky will love this book.
