Perhaps most enjoyable for those who are more interested in Mr. Stager, the author, than in his purported subject, lakes. "I" and "my" are everywhere, and eventually I just got a bit tired of constantly having to cut through the intermediary of the author in order to get to what I'd wanted in his book, a clear study of aspects of lakes. For many people, this may be worth the effort, since when you get there, the information is quite interesting. For me it was tiresome -- I kept thinking "Please get out of the way!!" I'm a big fan of Thoreau's WALDEN and especially his JOURNAL 1837-1861, where the author is obviously present but who constantly keeps the reader attuned to the extraordinary natural world rather than on himself as its reporter. We can't expect everybody to be another Thoreau, but after reading him, this was a big come-down. Read it if you have lots of time and the patience to sift through the self-reflecting surface of the writing and find the pith.

Most of us have had a relationship with one lake or another, but few understand what's happening below the surface, or what has happened to the lake in the past. Stager takes us to unique lakes, along the way dropping morsels of science that are as important as they are clearly presented -- in a single paragraph he provides understanding of complex phenomena without being technical or boring. Stager is not afraid to laugh at himself, which makes these accounts all the more personal and relatable. I'm especially struck by the scientific objectivity and the author's ability to see the real questions, and he clearly respects the value of good science. This book is a must-read for anyone who has seen a lake. Not only will it will change the way the reader sees lakes, it encourages us all to treasure these aquatic jewels for the marvels that they are.

The author can tell a good story, and he tells more than a few, and he provides an incredible amount of information about lakes and what we can learn about our environmental history from them. Definitely recommended.

Good science writing is hard to find - but here it is. The author nails it in this scientific yet entertaining look at lakes - not flinching from the future ahead for lakes in a time of climate change, but not being maudlin about it either.

As a frequent visitor to NY's Adirondack Park, I appreciated the insights the book offered not just on lakes in the Adirondack Park (couple of chapters touched on the region), but on various lakes globally, and the challenging environmental / economic balances that their local communities face. The relationship between humans and the environment can be a controversial subject, and the author handled some difficult topics fairly.The book presents very specialized information in an accessible manner which made it a very pleasant - and educational - read. I had no idea there were such things as “limnologists”, and that study of lakes was an actual field.

With a bit of travelogue tossed in, if that's what you are looking for. Starts with Walden Pondand builds from there, both scientifically and philosophically.

I loved this book. Beautifully and clearly written, carefully researched, and both moving and inspiring. A great read.

The Global Achievement Gap by Tony Wagner is another in a series of recent books that present a critical view of American education. What Wagner and others decry is the failure of schools to teach what he calls “survival skills,” namely such things as critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork. Wagner is described on the back cover of the book as an “Expert in Residence at Harvard University’s Innovation Lab.” He claims that there are two achievement gaps in our education systems. The first is the gap between the quality of schooling that most middle-class students get and the quality available to poor and minority children. The second gap, and the one that is the primary focus of the book, is the global gap between even what our best schools are teaching and testing and what all students need to succeed as workers, learners and citizens in today’s global knowledge economy.Wagner posits seven “survival skills” that he says are necessary. These include:1. Critical thinking and problem solving2. Collaboration across networks3. Agility and adaptability4. Initiative and entrepreneurship5. Effective oral and written communication6. Accessing and analyzing information7. Curiosity and imagination.He discusses these shortcomings in detail and gives many examples. He states that there is an overemphasis on testing which leads teachers to teach to the test. Another problem is that the training future teachers get in education schools is not adequate to what is needed.This book is very valuable for parents, students and anyone interested in education—both in the United States and globally. It not only provides specific examples, it also gives sources and organizations that you can contact.

Very good book however not appropriately titled. It focused almost exclusively on America and not greatly in a method of comparison with the exception of discussion non the PISA exam. This, however, does not take away from the book or its content. The information is wonderful and absolutely relevant to the issues facing the school system today. He examines how the rote memorization and learning of intricate details of every single subject does not constitute true learning but rather a method of information ingestion that is forgotten immediately after the test. He shows how even some of the top schools in America have the same issues in the way they teach. However, he also explores numerous schools that are getting it right. Schools that are unconventional. They do not all have students getting perfect scores on standardized tests but the students are actually learning and their ability to grasp information more deeply leads to their ability to rationalize and compartmentalize as an adult. This is a must have for parents and educators who want to understand how the system fails kids and how they can overcome it.

The title pretty much sums up the book. I began reading this book over the summer. I was about 1/3 of the way through and decided to stop reading the book and return it to the library. Why? Because there was so much great content that I was spending more time writing out my notes than actually reading the book.I recently purchased the book for my iPad so I could highlight and type my notes. This proved a much more productive method(and lead me to a thought on education practices) and allowed me to not only take away key passages, but also allowed for fluid reading.There is so much great info in this book. As I currently help operate an online global project with 600+ elementary students, I found many things in this book to hold merit and raise valid questions about education. Combine this with my recent visit to High Tech High(which was included in the book) and not only understand the need for some change to education, but demand it to happen. The great thing is that change is happening.Essentially, the author discusses 7 Essential Survival Skills that all students need.Wagner presents seven "survival skills" that students should be learning in school in order to prepare for college and adult life:* Critical Thinking and Problem Solving* Collaboration Across Networks and Leading by Influence* Agility and Adaptability* Initiative and Entrepreneurialism* Effective Oral and Written Communication.* Accessing and Analyzing Information* Curiosity and ImaginationThroughout the book he examines how these skills are being taught on the global scale and how much America has fallen behind the ranks in these skills. What is so great about his rhetoric and writing style is that it is not an all out bash on American schools. Being a teacher myself I have read plenty where teachers are just ripped apart. He focuses more on where things are going wrong and providing examples of schools that are on the right path to making change.The skills shared here are all skills that everyone needs for whatever avenue of life they choose. Some parents and students are stuck in schools that they cannot escape. The great thing with these skills are that they can be taught at home.Staying current with the development and changes in education I think things are moving in the right direction. I teach at a fantastic school and we even realize that changes need to be made.I recommend this book to anyone who has an investment in education(which is pretty much everyone). You will walk away from this book with a better understanding of what is needed for our students and nation to get back to the top.I will be using my 23 pages of notes for future blog posts on education, but since this is a review of the book I will save those rants for another day. A must read education book.

About the Author

Richard "Digger" Phelps compiled a 393-197 record in 20 years at the helm of Notre Dame's basketball program, becoming the winningest coach in Fighting Irish history. Fourteen of his teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament, including the 1977-78 team that reached the Final Four. Phelps's Irish teams beat a record seven teams that were ranked number one in the nation, including the 71-70 victory over UCLA on January 19, 1974, that ended the Bruins' record 88-game winning streak. I was really disappointed in this shallow,collection of crumbs from Phelps. It is much less interesting and honest than Echoes on the Hardwood by Mike Coffey. This would have been a good opportunity to hear Phelps explain why he couldn't win it all with some really great rosters. Instead we get a boring recital of Digger's finer moments, and total glossing over of his obvious shortcomings as a coach. This is more a book about how much Digger likes Digger than it is about basketball, the game, and character building. Save your money...buy Coffey's book, not this one

I really enjoyed this book because it was told from Diggers point of view on the different games and situations. My favorite aspect of the book was how he told personal stories about the players and program, stories that you would not hear any place else. Although it only concentrates on twenty years in the Notre Dame program, it still gives fans a great deal of knowledge about the history of a program that experienced great success in the past, went through some down years and is now on the rise again. I would recommend this book to any Notre Dame fan!

Should be required reading for every young person in high school..The chapter on his experiences in the Bush (sr.) administration show very clearly with all of the things wrong in Washinton Digger Phelps was one of the few things right...If more people would give back in their lives instead of taking this world would be a better place..this man has...

Always an excellent option for my 5 years old son, it maintains him engaged and busy when we go to the restaurant (I buy them always for that), this is like the number 10 that I buy. I used to buy them at Cracked Barrel but they don't sell them anymore, so Amazon saved me with this one too.I have to buy them in bulks lol the good thing is that there are different subjects for this purse, pocket littler entertainers, I use them for plane trips, road trip and even as goodies for parties could being great option.

I purchased a bunch of these (different titles) for a plane trip to keep my 3.5 and 1.5 year old girls busy (just got home yesterday, actually). They LOVED these. No, they don't really have a great "sticking area" to actually stick the stickers to - they limit this to the inside of the front and back covers. However kids love stickers regardless of the packaging or functionality and they like to stick them on themselves too - so this was of no consequence. They kept the girls busy for hours. My 3.5 year old loved them so much that she wanted to know if she could have a new sticker book today (I still have a few left over). Totally worth the money. Oh, and if you're having a themed party, getting one that patches your theme would be great for goody bags! I will buy this again and again...

I have two sons, ages 4 and 6. They are active, as boys generally tend to be. Having these little booklets around is a great way to engage them in something productive -- for less than two dollars.Each book contains a background "scene" and four sheets of stickers (far more than will fit on the "scene" at one time).Since we discovered that the stickers are NOT really reusable (while they do peel off the "scene" easily, they curl up when you stick them back onto the sticker sheet) -- I make a photocopies of the "scene" (one for each son) and divide up the stickers between them. They are always excited to "do stickers" and they keep their scenes to look at again and again.

I purchased this sticker book and the three other train sticker books similar to it as party favors for my son's train themed birthday party. The item description (demensions, amount of stickers, etc) is exactly what you get. A pocket sized book of stickers perfect for a party favor for little boys or girls. Or, a sticker book to throw in your diaper bag as a distraction for your little one at dinner or a wedding or wherever they might need a distraction. Or just a simple little book of stickers just for your child to enjoy. And, at $1 a piece, who can complain? So enjoy!

These little sticker books are wonderful! I took my 18 month on a 6 hour plane ride and these kept him entertained for much of the trip. I would have given this 5 stars however it claims that the stickers are reusable and unfortunately this is nowhere near an accurate description. The first time we bought them we left the stickers on the book for a few days and when we took them off, pretty much all of the "stickiness" was gone. We liked them so much that we bought more for another trip and tried to take them off immediately after our son was done playing with them. This did help a bit, but in no way would I describe them as reusable! When I purchased several of these they were $1.50 each with a 4 for 3 amazon promotion. I thought this was well worth purchasing them again however I noticed recently that the price has more than doubled!!! I will probably not purchase them again unless the price goes back down or they actually become reusable somehow.

Perfect little activity book. The size was exactly as described. Cute little sticker book for a train letter. You can place your stickers any where you want. great stocking stuffer for my 2 year old train loving guy.

Small but cute, we planned to use it for a distraction for long car rides. Haven't had the opportunity to give it to my 4 year old son yet.

I am collecting these hoping to complete the series. I purchased this as new. This one came today and I couldn’t be happier to receive it. However it did not come vacuum sealed with the limited edition trading card. It also had one of the corners scuffed and bent up. I would like to know why this happened, as well as whether or not I can still get the card.

This is again much much better than the english dub of the anime like the GX manga vs the english anime. The charaters seem to have a lot more personality than in the anime. The odd thing about the manga is the I can't find Mr.takahashi's name anywhere on the cover, but that is nothing ageinst it. There is a really fast element with the duels. The duels that seems to strech on way too long also move very fast and in many duels in the manga that I've read suffer from only one or none of these the 5Ds duels however due (I guess) to the artist's limitations to 21-page chapter for the SJ mounthly suffer either from BOTH or none. Read the 2nd volume and you'll definatly know what I mean. My friends agree with me on this. The story also seems to be much more well developed with Jack being the main adversary with Yusie earlier than in the anime. Many agrovating characters are either down played or not included at all. Also the series does not have the stupid crimson dragon thing in it and I hope it is not put it in later. Overall very good start to a hopfully great Yu-Gi-Oh manga adaptation.

I got this because my significant other recommended the series. I got it today, it was not in shrink wrap and the card was removed. Ther is also a cut in the back page. Other than that the book was in okay condition but i was still upset that the limited card was removed 1/10 never buy again from this person

About the Author

Geraldine Brooks is the author of four novels, the Pulitzer Prize-winning March and the international bestsellers Caleb's Crossing, People of the Book, and Year of Wonders. She has also written the acclaimed nonfiction works Nine Parts of Desire and Foreign Correspondence. Her most recent novel, Caleb's Crossing, was the winner of the New England Book Award for Fiction and the Christianity Today Book Award, and was a finalist for the Langum Prize in American Historical Fiction. The best test of a good read--to me--is the number of questions with which the book leaves me, and how my mind and body respond to the ending chapter. For this book, the overriding question sitting on my soul is: How can I go on without these characters in my immediate life?As for my cerebral and physical response to the book, well, this exquisitely written story literally knocked me out and as I finished the last sentence, I could not stand. The characters surrounded me and I simply had to sit and wait until they lifted away and permitted me to re-enter reality. That's how powerful every character and story, for it is one story made of many, affected me upon the finish.

People of the Book: A NovelWonderful story! Not very deep or developed characters, and not an unknown format - the plot moves back and forth from the present to various historical times when a book, which is actually the protagonist of the story, plays an important role in peoples' lives. This book, the Sarajevo Haggadah, actually exists, but the author gives it a very creative history and invents a myriad of characters and stories that are involved in transferring the book from here to there, each leaving a small sign or mark within its bindings and pages. What is interesting is that the (fictional) history of the book is told only to the reader, while the character who identifies all the clues of the book's journey through the centuries has no way of knowing how the specific findings she uncovers (a few grains of salt, an old blood stain, and more) came to be in the book. While the story surrounds a Jewish text, and clearly it is tied to Jewish history, it's a universal story. An intriguing yet easy read. Highly recommend it.

There are always those books that have been on your wishlist for years but you couldn't rationalize paying the full price for it; "People of the Book" was one of those books for me. I remember seeing this book in the bookstores back when I was in high school, and being totally drawn to the book art. I have to admit that I totally misinterpreted the cover. I most definitely thought it was making allusions to the the Egyptian God Horus. It is actually a wing of a moth, for those of you who are like me and the obvious alludes you.As with many New York Times Bestsellers, I am skeptical of their true merit. Not necessarily because these books aren't worthy of such titles, but rather because I always end up a little disappointed. I think I get disillusioned with what a "New York Times Bestseller" actually means in regards to the quality of the book. The "bestseller" title gives me high expectations for the book, but I should instead take it with a grain of salt given that it doesn't necessarily correlate with how much I will enjoy the book."People of the Book", as is apparent from the title, is the story of the multitude of people who were involved in the creation and/or safe-guarding of the famed Sarajevo Haggadah [a Jewish text].As was mentioned in a previous review, I absolutely love historical fiction pieces that intertwine multiple perspectives and storylines into the main plot. I believe that this sort of writing style for historical fiction is the most effective, as long as the transitions from past to present are done effectively. "People of the Book" did an excellent job with this and I genuinely enjoyed when the book had me time travel to unknown times and places. I would go so far as to say that I was even disappointed when the book took you back to the "present" main plot line. I, unfortunately, felt that the main plot line took away from the main focus of the book: the Haggadah. Particularly due to the love story between two of the main characters; it took away from the rest of the novel, and was unnecessary in the context of this story. The side stories, on the other hand, were perfection. My personal favorite was the last side-tale in which the artist behind the beautiful illuminations of the Haggadah was revealed.The construction of the plot line was artfully done, and I felt that the author did an excellent job in transitioning between the main plot line and the side stories. I particularly appreciated the chronological order she chose to take with these side narratives. In addition, Geraldine Brooks did not necessarily directly connect all the parts of the story together; she left a little mystery to it and gave just enough information for the reader to be able to discern it themselves.I am glad that I was finally able to read this book, but in the realm of historical fiction novels, this was not one of my favorites. I just felt that the main plot line took away from the side narratives, and there were parts of the main storyline that seemed extraneous. However, the central themes of the book are important ones, and Geraldine Brooks highlights them at every occasion she gets. The main theme being that historical artifacts are central to our history and their importance should be recognized. Unlike us, they are able to survive time and tell their stories to future generations, if only we would listen.

The story is quite complex made even more so by the switches between narrators and time periods. However, the underlying history of a Jewish book which escaped burning during the Inquisition, the exile of the Jews from Spain, and other historical events, including Hitler, the Holocaust, and others which should have spelled the end for the book. The key was the passion of various unrelated persons who risked their lives to save it. The novel is based on a true incident however, the individual vignettes were creative fiction invented to answer the unanswerable question of how it could have happened. It held my attention and always seemed to be rooted in real people. I've been interested in history and especially the history of the Jews during their diaspora. I think anyone with a similar interest will find the book provides details of that period which are less available than books that concentrate on World War II. I highly recommend it. Its worth the sometimes struggle of trying to keep up with the back and forth of time and place.

This book was recommended to me several years ago and I didn't get around to reading it until recently. So glad that I did! It was a good read -- hard to put down, in fact, but it had some real depth to it as well. In the course of the story, we learn about religious persecution and how it damages both the persecuted and the persecutors. These portions of the book were panful to read. The book also includes some description of religious tolerance, however, and the positive effects of that on the lives of all. I found it especially appropriate for the current time and the specter of religious intolerance looming. There are lots of different characters in this book as well as different historical periods. Ms. Brooks made me care about all of them. Her writing drew me into each period and provided a greater understanding of each.
