About the Author
Kevin Allen has written about every level of hockey, from the NHL to the Olympics and the Women’s World Championship, and has covered more than 550 NHL playoff games. He is the author or coauthor of more than a dozen sports books, including Brett Hull’s as-told-to autobiography, and is president of the Professional Hockey Writers Association. He lives in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Bob Duff is a hockey historian and a member of the Society for International Hockey Research. He is the sports columnist for the Windsor Star and covers the NHL for MSNBC.com. He is the author of the Johnny Bower biography, The China Wall. He lives in Cottam, Ontario. Johnny Bower was a goalie for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1960s, won four Stanley Cups during that time, and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1976. He lives in Toronto.

This book Without Fear: The Greatest Goalies of All Time is a fantastic book for any Hockey fan especially Goalies. What they did is take a panel of great NHL players and have them rate the goaltenders they had to try and score off of (or played with). And It is a great list. Many may argue with the Order but not many ail argue with those included they were and are all great ones. I am very glad they included Rogie Vachon who gets short shifted allot of the time, they even have an explanation why is not in the Hockey Hall Of Fame, and that is a travesty. Many covered hear in Without Fear: Brodeur, Roy, Sawchuk, Hall, Plante, Hasek, Durnan, Ken Dryden, Hainsworth, Vezina, Parent, Broda, Fuhr, Brimsek, Billy Smith, Tony Eposito, Benedict, Gardiner, Bower, Worsley, Thompson, Cheevers, Connell, The Great Russian Goalie Vladislav, Barrasso, Lumley, Belfour, Holmes, Worters, Rollins, Osgood, Mike Vernon, Riley Hern, the aforementioned Rogie Vachon, Lorne Chabot and many others. After lining up the top 50 Goaltenders then they break then down into sections such as Innovators, Winners, Perfectionists, Tragic Heroes and underappreciated Players and then has a section with the next 50 best. The book is written by Kevin Allen and Bob Duff and there is special commentary by Johnny Bower. And they did a wonderful job and a thoroughly enjoyable book that can also serve as a coffee table book with all the great photos included. Its a must have for any Hockey Fan.
Johnny Bower, former Toronto Maple Leafs goalie, gives commentary on almost every goalie in this book, another reason why this is a great book to have on any goalie's bookshelf.
Bought for my son's birthday book for school. He loved it - he is a goalie himself. The look of happiness on his face when he unwrapped this was great.
Great book on NHL goalies
This was one of several books I got my goalie playing son for his 12th birthday. He loves it.

Without Fear was originally released in 2002 to chronicle who, at the time, was worthy of being considered the 50 greatest goaltenders in history. Chock full of useful information from living legend Johnny Bower (who made the list himself thanks to his run with the Toronto Maple Leafs), Without Fear documented captivating articles that could even draw in readers with a passing interest in hockey. The book was sure to let you know who innovated the game (such as Jacques Plante, the first goaltender to regularly wear a mask), who sought to make it an art form (like Dominik Hasek and is zany antics), the unsung heroes of the game (an example being Bill Ranford, who largely played in Grant Fuhr's shadow in Edmonton), the tragic heroes (including Georges Vezina, who died very young in life), and those who put winning above all (personified best by Gerry Cheevers.)In 2012, the book was re-released with more content on "The Next 50" goaltenders. This saw stars such as Roberto Luongo and Nikolai Khabibulin added to the book as well (though some goaltenders, such as John Vanbiesboruck were bumped from their previous Top 50 spots and into the Top 100.) This was very welcome, as it only fortifies the excellence that was presented along with the book's first edition. There may be some revisions if there's a third edition (such as removing Jose Theodore or Ilya Bryzgalov), but the fact that the book, which was already excellent, had a revision should be considered proof positive that the writers of the book remain continually dedicated to preserving the history of hockey goaltending.I recommend this book to everyone.
