This is an excellent guide for anyone wanting to explore the Moon. Many amateur astronomers shun the Moon as a natural form of light pollution, but this guide can help you make use of those brighter nights! The guide is helpful even without a telescope - all you need are simple binoculars to get started. The author also provides a lot of facts and useful information relating to history, science, and lunar exploration.I particularly like that each of the 50 Things to see on the Moon have 3 separate photos to show you their orientation in binoculars, a refractor style telescope, and a reflecting type of telescope! Each of these instruments provides a different orientation to the view and these images really help to identify the objects easily. The author also tells you which phase of the Moon is best to look at each feature. Sometimes the Full Moon is just too bright - for some features it is best to look when the Moon is less illuminated.So stop ignoring the Moon! There is a lot to learn and you will get more out of your investment in the hobby!(The reviewer was provided an advance copy of this book for evaluation.)

I am an amateur astronomer who has been spending nearly all of my time viewing dark sky objects and planets during a new moon. Aside from an occasional glance or lunar eclipse, I've ignored it. Not any longer. Mr. Read's book has challenged me explore each of the 50 "Things" that appear during its various phases. Now I can bring out my telescope, if it ever stops raining in Calif., when the moon is bright.A presentation of the features on the moon.
This book would be an excellent reference for any beginner amateur astronomer. It provides some basic observing suggestions for both telescope and binocular viewers.I especially enjoyed the “Stellar Facts†which provide historical and current information regarding the 50 objects. The layout from 1-day old moon to full moon is appropriate for the reader. I liked the explanations of the objects and the three different views.This book would be very useful for anyone doing an outreach event, especially for younger viewers. I didn’t notice a mention of a moon filter (to darken the view) which is useful for larger scopes.I do believe there are a few objects which might be difficult for the beginner to view, especially with a small telescope. However, these were noted as difficult.I received an advance copy from the author.
