Review

"This collection of 26 garments features the work of designer Tsukiori, whose blousy, romantic style is popular in her native Japan. Some of the dresses are stylish in a sweet, retro way, but a few look like children's clothing sized to fit adults, making them a little too precious-looking for most adults to wear. The directions for assembling the garments assume significant knowledge of clothing construction—there is no basic how-to information provided. Patterns for sizes 6 –16 are included. VERDICT Though the garments themselves aren't particularly complex and the directions aren't very detailed; this book is most appropriate for skilled, confident sewists or fashion/design collections." —Library Journal"I absolutely adore quite a few of the garments in the book and can see them fitting into my wardrobe effortlessly." —Holly Lefevre, 504 Main blog"The no-rules looks pictured in this book are perfect for today's carefree fashion sensibility and will inspire you to have fun with fabric and style." —Sew Mama Sew blog"The patterns are all timeless in style, by this, I guess I mean they'd suit a twenty-year-old equally as well as a fifty-year-old and also that the designs won't really go out of fashion." —Ideas and Inspirations blog"For experienced sewists who'd like to try some of the popular patterns coming out of Japan, this book is a good introduction. […] Notably, however, more directions than usual are provided, and the size range is much greater than typically given, going up to size 16. Using Japanese-origin books as crafting manuals, even when well translated, is always a bit of an adventure; this book is a good place to start if so inclined." —Publishers Weekly"Stylish Dress Book is the book that really fueled the popularity of Japanese sewing pattern books internationally. Even though the original Japanese version was published back in 2008, Stylish Dress Book remains extremely...well, stylish!" —Japanese Sewing Patterns by Sew in Love blog"…Considering the number of patterns in the book and my fabric stash the possibilities are endless. Even a penny pincher like me can see that the cost of the book with twenty-six patterns included is an absolute bargain!" —About.com"[…] a total of 26 patterns in sizes 6 to 16. So many of the styles are perfect for layering and leggings," —Sweeter Than Cupcakes Blog blog

If you are at all acquainted with the current market of Japanese sewing books, you probably have heard of the name Yoshiko Tsukiori. She's one of the most popular and prolific authors in her field, with a multitude of fans around the world. This book is the first in a series of 3 volumes named Stylish Dress Book, and very often seen discussed in sewing blogs and community sites. For example, the French sewing community Japan Couture Addicts [...] has literally hundreds of member posts of projects from this book (both the original Japanese and the French editions). I highly recommend visiting this site to see what sorts of styles are included in this book, and to inspire your creativity with ideas of how the styles can be executed. The designs in this book have a distinctly quaint, countryside aesthetic, best suited for printed woven cottons, such as those produced by Liberty of London (prominently featured in this book). If your tastes range more toward the current RTW trends or more modern deconstructed styles, you might not find the dresses very appealing. The sizes in this book covers bust measurements 78cm (30.75 inches) to 102cm (40.25 inches), which is broader than what the original Japanese edition offered. It seems they added in 2 larger sizes for the American edition. If you are larger than this size range, you might still be able to use the patterns provided, as the designs have a fairly large amount of ease, and most people seem to go a size or two down to achieve a closer fit. If you have a little bit of experience with pattern resizing, then it would probably be pretty straightforward to resize the patterns, as the pieces are mostly boxy and geometric, and the construction is pretty simple and mostly involves straight-line sewing.*A note to people not familiar with Japanese-style sewing books*The patterns in this book, as with pretty much all other Japanese sewing books, come printed on sheets of poster-sized paper inserted in the back of the book. The pieces overlap with each other, to save space, but they are color-coded to help you tell them apart. You must trace them onto a separate piece of paper (e.g. Sewable Swedish Tracing Paper or Bienfang Sketching Paper) and use the traced copy to make the dress. You also have to add seam allowances after you trace out each piece, and the instructions for each dress includes a cutting layout diagram that shows you how much to add for each seam. It is important that you are aware of this if you are considering buying this or any other Japanese sewing book. If you are unable or unwilling to trace out the patterns and add seam allowances by hand, then this book will not be of much use to you.***The quality of the translation is very good. Even though you can obtain almost all of the necessary information through the diagrams alone, the written directions are very well translated, conveying clear meaning and retaining the succinctness of the original Japanese. This edition does seem to omit the short general information section from the Japanese original. There's one page in the front of the book that has the size table, with a paragraph explaining the general format of the patterns, but otherwise no guidance is given for how to use this book, nor are there any general construction tips. Thus, you should probably have some rudimentary experience with dressmaking before tackling this book. This book assumes that you already possess the sort of knowledge given in sewing books like The Colette Sewing Handbook. If you have already made one or two garments, you can probably handle the projects in this book just fine.I was very glad to see that they kept the metric measurements from the original edition. They added in Imperial unit conversions to make it more accessible to American readers, but noted that the metric measurements will give greater precision. Seriously, why are we still on Imperial units? Even the British have gone metric now.One thing that irks me a little about this edition is that the printing seems to be lower quality than the Japanese original. The colors are super-saturated and the photos are fuzzy. One of the things I really love about Japanese sewing books is the gorgeous photography of all the styles in the book; and the poor printing quality of the copy I received rather detracts from that enjoyment. Perhaps later batches will have better printing quality.Overall, I rate this edition at 4.5, for its low-quality printing. I'll round it up to 5 since the translation is quite good, and all of the important content from the original edition is faithfully retained. If you enjoy making clothes, you should definitely pick up a copy, as there are lots of easy and fun dresses in this book, and all the construction steps are not only clearly explained in words, but also meticulously diagramed. If you are able to obtain a copy of the original Japanese edition, I would recommend getting that instead, as that edition has much higher production values, and so would probably be more visually enjoyable. All in all, I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sewing. The dresses are pretty easy to make, but also give you a lot of room for creativity (as you can see on Japan Couture Addicts), and so novice and veteran sewers alike will find something interesting to do with this book. The diagrams are simply phenomenal, and make the construction process very easy to understand, so it's accessible to sewers with limited experience. Finally, I think it's nice to explore some different styles. The dresses in this book are very different from the types of patterns you get from McCall's and Simplicity, and I think being exposed to a different aesthetic helps you build your personal design vocabulary, which will help you create more awesome clothes :) I also highly recommend the Drape Drape series, by Hisako Sato, and any book by Machiko Kayaki. Happy sewing!

I've been sucked into the Japanese sewing book craze. This is just one of the books that I have purchased. It's easy to follow and contains cute loose fitting dress patterns. If you've never worn this style of clothing before, I would suggest going to a store to try before committing to purchase this book. I've had coworkers "complain" about how I like to wear baggy clothes. But who cares, I'm digging the potato sack look :). Let's just say this style is an "acquired taste" for lack of better term. Here are some things one should know about Japanese pattern books in general before deciding to purchase them:1. The patterns are printed out overlapping each other. This means that you cannot cut the pattern out from the print they provide you because multiple patterns might be overlaid on top of each other. You must trace it out on paper. Use your choice of paper. This is what I use:Bienfang 50-Yard by 36-Inch wide Sketching and Tracing Paper Roll2. The patterns do not include seam allowance. The book will show you a diagram telling you how much seam allowance to add. So don't forget to add it after tracing out your pattern!Pictured is the dress I made which is the one featured on the cover. i wear it both as a dress and a shirt/tunic. If I don't feel like rocking the baggy style, I throw on a belt.

I'm a novice, and I have already successfully made a very nice shirt from this book! The instructions are easy to follow. It can be slightly challenging trying to locate the right pattern, but not a big problem. I'm an XXSP, and I love loose fitting outfits. Based on this one shirt that I made, I'm really happy with their sizing. The designs are simple, yet could be quirky in a way. Not everyone can pull them off or appreciate their style. For those that do (like myself), this book is amazing!

This book is great. I was a bit scared off by other reviews, thinking that adding the seam allowances would be a huge production and worried the instructions would be inadequate. I'm no expert. I believe I'm a rank amateur when it comes to garment sewing. I've been sewing for my children for about 10 years (everyday clothes, pajamas, plenty of mistakes). And 15 years sewing simple things like curtains, pillow cases, etc. I expected to be confused. But the instructions are actually quite clear. I'm confident that if I take my time, working slowly I can sew a lovely wardrobe for myself. I would say that if you are willing to slow down, read slowly, take your time, and research (youtube, google) this would be doable.

The patterns are so lovely and the fabric choice they have used are perfect to give an idea of what type of end products can be made.I bought the book because of all the lovely pictures I kept seeing on pinterest and the positive reviews on amazon too. It does come with size options 6-16 .I suppose the sizing is Japanese sizing and not USA. Even a size 16 measurement provided in book will not work for a USA size 12 person. I have no idea how to grade the pattern. There is no place to ask about that here. Total disappointment. :( So all I can do is return and see what else I can do to try making these "oh so comfortable" japanese dress :(.I do not understand the sizing method used here. Can someone make me understand how to figure this thing? If you know to grade the pattern and make it work, great! Good for you!

Adorable book. Projects are fairly easy. I made myself a cute cotton dress. Ahhh such adorable dresses ♡
