I extensively used the Insight Guides "Scandinavia" guidebook while preparing for a recent trip to Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, and was extremely pleased with the content and illustrations. One thing that sets this series apart from most other guidebooks are the excellent numerous color illustrations. The photography is superior, and the maps are useful for planning and general orientation. The text is similarly excellent, and helped a great deal in planning the trip, especially for the Copenhagen and Bergen portions of the itinerary. There is excellent general information in the back of the book on accommodations, weather (a big factor in a Scandinavian trip), culture, transportation and a bevy of other issues of keen interest to any traveler. Although I did take the book on the trip, I actually found it more useful in the planning stages of the trip as it is relatively large and heavy. I defaulted to a small pocket guidebook and locally obtained maps when out and about.I recommend this book without hesitation: it is comprehensive, detailed, accurate (in my personal experience), and enjoyable to read.
I always use Insight Guides to research before I travel to new lands. It is the best guide I've found with great photos, practical info and just enough background to interest without overkill.
I am a Dane, and have been living and working in Denmark for the first 55 years of my life, but now living in Thailand. I have bought this Scandinavia traveler guide, for using when inhabitants out here, ask me about Denmark, concerning which, nearly nobody are having the slightest idea. And I bought this insight guide cowering Scandinavia, instead of one only concerning Denmark, as especially the cultures, history, and so on, in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, are very equal, at vi among other are talking the same language. And that during the Viking years we were a bit more connected, than we are told in this insight guide. And actually it's easy to cross around between these countries as now also from Denmark to Germany, and thereby most of the rest of the European countries. Where, Denmark, opposite to Norway and Sweden, is a member in EU.When I went searching for a tourist guide, I first asked for Insight Guide, and then between these would be looking after Scandinavia countries, to see what the result would be. And using these searching words after not long ago having received an "Insight Guide Myanmar" (Burma), and then finding this tourist guide, in my eyes, standing for a better trade mark than those for other travelers guides, which I earlier had bought. This among other coursed by in the "Insight Guide Myanmar" finding better, and more helpful, maps, and besides many god pictures. This "Insight Guide Scandinavia", is excellent in showing all of Scandinavia, but if I only were going on to visit Denmark, I absolutely besides, or instead, would have a tourist guide only concerning Denmark. As by only owing this Scandinavia traveler guide, the chance for not discovering many interesting places, in Denmark, easily can happen. All right, for example on the side 115, we are having a headline Viking town, and in the following lines, are reading about the opening times for the Roskilde Domkirke (Cathedral), and the telephone number and www advisement for the Vikingeskibsmuseet in Roskilde, about 35 km from Copenhagen. But we don't are having photos showing the Cathedral, in which nearly all of the Danish kings and queens, during the last, nearly, 900 years are buried. Among other, Margrete I, the queen of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, who died 601 year ago. And for the bay, starting 28 meter "down" under the Cathedral, we are missing a photo showing the many new build copies of the Viking ships, which there are sailing around with the visitors. In the book, we besides the writings concerning the Scandinavian countries, we naturally also are getting a few sides telling about Greenland and Faroe, and thereby, so to me, we also ought to have 4 sides telling about Iceland, which we only are discovering as an island, on the map shoving Greenland, on the side 138. My feeling this, naturally because Iceland, when we are looking on the cultures, actually is more connected to the Scandinavia, than Greenland and Faroe. Naturally as Iceland was discovered by the Vikings who then populated this island. As a side remark, we now on Iceland know about 80 persons which in their DNA are showing that they are having a gen connection to the Indians. And besides more than 20 years ago I in a magazine was reading that it look like an Indian tribe, that died, around the year 1890, by sicknesses brought to North America by the emigrations, probably were coming from the Vikings, as they were blond like the Vikings. All together an excellent traveler guide giving an idea about all of the quite different possibilities to go searching in Scandinavia. And concerning Norway, Sweden, and Finland, when we are thinking about visiting in summer or winter, then opposite to Denmark, these 3 countries, in the winter, are sure for having much snow during months. And with the respect to go south or north, then most up north, we in the midsummer are having daylight for 24 hours. A thing which most of the persons here in Thailand don't have the slightest idea about, as they are used to 12 hours daylight every day throughout the year.
Very informative for a future trip.
Covers a lot of aspects to traveling in Scandanavia. I will be sure to take it with me on the trip.
Not very well organized, and not as comprehensive and as informative as the DK Eyewitness series.
Very helpful in providing additional information to make a guided trip more enjoyable/the photographs are outstanding.
Very nice book! Informative and full of wonderful pictures from each country!
