It transported me through the Christmas fairyland which Laura Dowling and her volunteers created. The best part is that there is a step-by-step explanation of several of the projects and arrangements which actually look achievable, and they will be fun family projects over Thanksgiving weekend!

I'm a Professional Florist Designer, I wanted to get the in scoop of floral designing for the White House. Very informative and thrilling.

I like the book overall. Beautiful pictures and nice descriptions of procedures. I wish it would have had the current president and First Lady. Not a fan of past president and too many mentions of the dogs!

This book is such an amazing and wonderfully readable document that I would recommend anyone interested in 20th century American musical history, or the [...]/black urban experience of the 1970's, or relatively recent New York history read it. Of course if you're interested in disco music or dance music the book is absolutely essential.This book goes much deeper than the usual Studio 54 cliches that people associate with the genre (although Studio 54 is included, of course) and discusses the origins of the sound and the largely unhearalded people who made this scene happen. David Mancuso is described as a pivotable person here, and the folks who were there will confirm it. The book begins in his legendary club, The Loft, and lovingly details his obsession with sound and the disco experience. Other innovators from the early 70's are also featured including Francis Grasso, Steve D'Acquisto, Bob Casey, and many more. The scene is chronicaled from humble beginnings through the glory years of the mid 70's and ends the decade with the backlash in full swing in mainstream culture but continuing to thrive in clubs like Paradise Garage and Better Days. Along the way you meet producers like Walter Gibbons and Tom Moulton who made some of the classic recordings of the era, and Lawrence takes the time to explain what is so remarkable about their work. You also get delightfully naughty stories about some of the key players in the scene including DJ's, artists, and of course, the patrons that illustrate some of the excesses of the time . Personally, I think that it's this superb combination of detailed research and bitchy gossip that makes the book so thoroughly readable and fun.I loved reading this book; the only drawback for me was that I couldn't help pining for the days when New York club culture was this incredible before AIDS and Rudy Guilliani conspired to very nearly kill it off (fortunately they weren't entirely successful).HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Not only is this important narrative non-fiction that blends music history, sociology and politics, it's a total blast. I came of age in the 70's yet was never a huge fan of dance music or disco at the time. I wish I had paid more attention because after reading LOVE SAVES THE DAY, I clearly felt like I missed something really special. The development of the story from the earliest discotheques of the mid 60's in midtown Manhattan grew the inevitable birth of discos in the 70's where gays, straights, blacks, Latinos and whites got all mixed together with the magic elixir of dance music. For the most part it didn't matter who you were or where you came from in the pulsating, hot, hedonistic dance clubs of downtown and midtown, that quickly spread all over America and the world. Many of the key dj's are sadly no longer with us but their legacy will live forever in this marvelous book.

Love Saves the Day book is a good book to read if you want to know how Dance Music Culture came in to being established.Right after I was born, technology was revolving for Dance Clubs. The Dance Clubs were in the process of standardizing using Bozak Preamp Mixer, Three Belt Drive Turntables, Cassette Deck, Open reel tape machine, Active crossovers, Graphic and Parametric Equalizers, three racks full of amplifiers and stacks of speakers. Very fascinating and interesting book to read.

My only complain with the book is that it's dry, historical focus robs it of much of the cultural criticism and readings that it could contain, although there are moments--e.g. "the interpretation of [Donna] Summer's oooh and aahs" and its relation to the liberation of female sexuality in comparison to songs like Gainsbourg's "Je T'aime...Moi Non Plus" on p173-174, or the explication of the cultural import of Saturday Night Fever on p307.

This book is very tempting : I mean, I read it months ago and at that time, wished that it would never end (I'm dedicated to pleasure, I'm afraid);but it did.So, now & again, I grab it & try to get more substance from it, be it the souvenir of the thrills I once got, at night, in bed.I learned and connected lots of things from this era, I dived into 70's high-class disco sounds head-first because of Arthur Russell and this book, the story of David Mancuso, Nicky Siano, Larry Levan, the magnificent Walter Gibbons, Bob Blank (wizzard) and oh ! all the ItaloAmericans who dedicated their talent and enthusiasm to giving pleasure vibes to people on improvised dancefloors, the love vibes, the sensual surroundings of it all, the nonstop motion which motor was love, party, get high, love again ! Reading, I was completely taken by that part of contemporary social/musical history. Said Robert Fripp about disco music : "now people are going to vote with their feet". So thanks Tim Lawrence, bless you.

As a Benedictine Oblate, this book is meant to be used by me and all oblates, as an adjunct to our life of work and prayer. It is an excellent little handbook, containing Benedict's Rule; articles written by other oblates and monks to help round out our understanding; and readings for each day of the week.Unfortunately, the book hasn't been properly proofread, so that some words are missing, others have the wrong meaning, and there are typos which are irritating while reading.Overall, a very good book, spoilt by poor proofreading.

"The Benedictine Handbook" is very well-written one-volume introduction to the Benedictine Order and its founder, Saint Benedict of Nursia. The book contains the entire Rule of Saint Benedict, a section on the "tools" of the order, which also fall under the title "words of wisdom", a very good exemplar of special and daily prayer in the order, biographies of key figures in the development and history of the Benedictine Order, finally concluding with a good collection of essays explaining how the Order of Saint Benedict serves the Will of Christ in the world today.This book is so good that my first copy went to the senior pastor at my church (a church belonging to the Church of God, Anderson, Indiana).

I thought the book was an excellent guide for people wondering about becoming an oblate as I am. It comes with the Benedictine rule, and numerous short essays giving one insight into living the rule. The only reason for four stars is that none of the information ties back into Abbeys or monasteries in America, it seems the history stops at Europe. And I wish it had better examples of balancing the prayer life with living in the world.

I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend who, with me is a Lay Cistercians of Gethsemani Abbey. It is a great primer for one who wants to follow the spirituality of St. Benedict and his sons and daughters. The book gives a history of the Benedictine Order and the various reforms that have occurred over time, including the history of the Cistercian reform and Order. It chapters on the Rule of St. Benedict, the tools of Benedictine Spirituality, the Benedictine experience of God, how to live this spirituality in community, in solitude, as an oblate, and in the world. It also includes the brief biographies of various saints and holy men and women who have followed the Benedictine spirituality. It includes morning and evening prayers for those who do not have another prayer regime.

Its something that I have been taking slowly; its a journey, one step at a time.

The Benedictine Handbook provided a clear and thorough guide for anyone interested in the Benedictine way of life and the expectations of the Benedictine lifestyle. It was easy to understand and follow.

Prior to reading the Rule of Saint Benedict or becoming involved with any Benedictine activity, an individual should have some foundation to stand upon in order to adequately understand how, what and why. "The Benedictine Handbook" is that foundation. It offers the reader a brief history of the Benedictine life as well as suggested prayers and the Rule of Saint Benedict.Although an excellent introduction for the novice, an Oblate of Saint Benedict should delve deeper by using the prayers in the Liturgy of the Hours such as "Benedictine Daily Prayer: A Short Breviary."

When I saw the title of this book, I was skeptical. There are so many (too many) books in the market about self-improvement that don't deliver anything new. "Its title says it's not another fitness book, but I find that hard to believe," I muttered under my breath. "Show me!"Guess what? It's not just another fitness book. In the entire first half of the book the author reveals much of himself--his losses, his addictions, his heartbreak, and his lack of self confidence. Over many years he slowly began to heal himself through a hard-fought commitment to fitness and spiritual enlightenment. Like the author, I've had crushing losses that left me depressed and without hope. I never really believed that fitness could be the way out. My spiritual growth in a Christian contemplative life has helped me to find peace but I never though it possible to improve my physical conditioning at my age (baby boomer).The second half of book, the "manual" section, consists of uncomplicated guidelines that are backed by years of experience and study. I'm impressed with the author's knowledge, I'm grateful for his commitment to helping others, and I'm encouraged that at age 71 I'm not too old to make significant improvements in my body and my state of mind.So the skeptic was proven wrong--it truly is not another fitness book.

First an admission of guilt: I start books, enjoy them, yet leave them before I reach the last page. I can come up with many reasons why this happens, but none of them really makes any sense so I leave it at that. Not this book that I read and (and reread some pages). The title did catch my eyes - which I thought “hmmm, I really want to read about fitness but in a not another fitness book!” So, I read it all and somehow I reached the last page, miraculously, What is appealing about it is the heartfelt and genuine stories of the author that take the reader through the pages in consistent rhythm of authenticity and deep personal conviction. The book goes through a personal journey that leads the reader through real-life stories to pass a clear message: Move. Respect your body. Respect your mind. Treasure the gift you have. I thoroughly enjoyed Steven’s journey and somehow made me appreciate and improve mine as well. Finally, I loved the collection of quotations sprinkled throughout the book. This book should be renamed to “Manifesto for a Better You!”

Titled “Not Another Fitness Book,” Steven Head’s narrative takes the reader way beyond the personal training clues he provides from his depth and variety of experience. The fitness you can gain from reading this book goes beyond “physical” fitness, offering helpful input to achieve greater philosophical, ethical, and social fitness too. You get there by following Steven’s personal journey, one with all the sharp turns, sad moments, and obstacles to overcome that would make any life story interesting. Throughout, you see how physical activity and conscious exercise is woven into Steven’s life story, and is substantially responsible for his health and happiness. They could and probably should be woven into your own, even if you are lucky enough not to encounter similar trials. And he tells you how, meeting you right where you are in the shape you are in. There’s no finger-wagging here, there’s wisdom and realism. And it leaves you with the sense that, “Yes, I could do this. Indeed, yes, I will do this.” And you're very glad he did.Head’s prose is direct and easy, and readers like me can be pulled along to the end in one enriching session of two to three hours. Take the trip.

Steven Head knocks it out of the park with this book. He shares his personal struggles and demons, and reveals how fitness, and mind/body wellness, changed his life. It is a manual to help those of us who have tried and quit gyms/trainers time and time again. I have the good fortune of training with Steven, and can say without a doubt that he has changed my life--in the way I feel, the way I look (got a long way to go on that one), and my general attitude about fitness. I highly recommend treating yourself to a fresh look at life, and fitness. Read this book!

After many years of not lifting weights, I read this book and was inspired to go back to the gym. I have been lifting regularly for several months now. It is great to feel the strength returning while also watching my weight go down.In reading this book, you can clearly see that Steven has a lot of problems and challenges in his life. One constant in his life has been fitness. Fitness has helped him through some difficult times and helped him deal with depression and loss. It is very motivational to see what a difference fitness has made in his life. It motivated me to give it try myself.I gave this book to everyone in my office for Christmas this year and to many family members. I am getting a lot of very positive feedback from many of them.I highly recommend this book!

Steven Head's book should be required reading for anyone with both a brain and a body. The first half of the book is a very personal look at what has made Steven the man that he is. The obstacles, both external and self-inflicted, and the too-many tragedies, but most importantly the willingness he has to learn, grow and understand why he so often got in his own way (as we all tend to do). The second half is the most unique fitness manual you will ever read, without a single exercise. The focus is on making sure that the mind is on-board with the body, that we recognize that we have tremendous physical potential at any age and are often held back from unleashing that potential only by our personal demons and misconceptions. All in all, a wonderful, valuable read.
