About the Author

Amy Tan is the author of The Joy Luck Club, The Kitchen God’s Wife, The Hundred Secret Senses, and two children’s books, The Moon Lady and The Chinese Siamese Cat, which has been adapted as Sagwa, a PBS series for children. So many folks told our Book Club how much they enjoyed Amy Tan's other works such as The Joy Luck Club and The Kitchen God's Wife, that choosing Saving Fish from Drowning as our September 2007 read was an easy decision. We were ready for a good read. Certainly, the title was intriguing. What could it mean? How will it apply to the story? Tell us more. Writing from the perspective of a dead woman, Bibi Chen, Tan expertly began to reel us in with a quirky story set in odd places filled with unusual characters. It was exactly what you'd expect from a writer of her renown. For about a hundred pages we were hooked.About halfway through the book, we began to have some doubts. For some, it started with her use of foreshadowing. Forget subtlety. Think Yogi Berra meets Burma Shave: When you come to a fork in the road, take it. For others, the problem was plot, or more accurately too many sub-plots and no main one. In the end, most of our readers didn't care a fig for any of the characters or the various stories. Mercifully, the book does have an ending. Even better, there is an Epilog. So if you really want to know if the tribe ever finds their lost God or if they end up massacred by the Myanmar military, or more important, if Harry gets Sally, Tan is there to wrap it all up for you. In Burma Shave lingo, we think her sermon says: Western do-gooders are like so many fishermen who spend their days saving fish from drowning.

Reviews and synopsis was very misleading about this book. I could only read the first 4 chapters. I found it too vulgar.

So much serendipity yet my mind accepted it, knew it wasn’t a gimmick, knew this could happen. The world goes round and round and comes out here.

Kinda a loopy tale that delves into the lives of several people traveling from China to Burma in the 21st century. It chronicles the missteps and foolish mistakes many tourists make when encountering cultures vastly different from that of the U.S. It even observes how these tourists well intentioned, but short sighted help for a beleaguered minority goes awry once the cameras are turned off.

I enjoyed the book immensely, revealing in descriptions of the water buffalo, the tourists, and their Karen friends. And I consider it the best she’s written.

Amy Tan allows us to see into another culture and how American tourists either come to accept and appreciate it or become disenchanted. What we want in the world is not what we always get and it is hard for some of us to accept the learnings that may come with disappointment. A gentle writer who moves the plot along while still developing good character definitions. If you have enjoyed other Tan novels, you will also enjoy this one.

As a fan of Amy Tan, she did not disappoint. This is a beautifully constructed story, woven with just the right amount of romance and intriguing complications. I loved the descriptions of the lands and characters.

From the 1st page, I have not been able to put this book down. The characters are well defined and I found myself wanting to know more about them. As they got to Burma, I loved the details Ms. Tan gave about the travelers experiences and thoughts about their surroundings.The underlying political message about Myanmar is a gentle reminder that there are still places in this world where people are not free and treatly poorly by those in control.

I thought this book was going to teach you British Slangs or Words that are used in England. Nope, this is just teaching you English Vocabulary that's it nothing fancy. It was like throwing money in the trash.

I thought this book would define British English all it did was tell you the definition of fruit and farm animals I'm guessing for people who don't speak English. Glad I didn't pay anything for it. I felt the discription of the book was very misleading

I think the book is good, but it requires either a disk or online version of the language. I expected more of a text type book, complete in itself. Not what I expected.

I got this book thinking it was a cookbook. As a fan of Choi's groundbreaking Kogi Truck, I was really excited to see that he had written a cookbook. I was initially met with serious disappointment as I thumbed through the book and saw the ratio of prose to recipe grow bigger and bigger. Bigger than I was expecting at any rate.But, fan of CHoi's food that I am, I decided to start reading it anyway. The Introduction is so gracious that it prompted me on to next chapter. Before I knew it, I was reading the next, and the next, and the next, because Choi's writing style is immensely readable. It draws you in before you have time to realize that you've just read six chapters nonstop. In fact, his writing style is so enjoyable that I can almost forget about his liberal use of F-bombs (t's just not my thing). I cannot, however, quite forgive his use of certain bathroom-related words that should never be used in context with food. Never. Ever. Period. Bleh!Choi's story, and that of his family, is one of wonderful ups, sorrowful downs and gobsmacking surprises, especially if what you know about Choi is where he has landed. It also fully explains Choi's insanely creative grasp of "fusion" food and why the Kogi Truck, which in and of itself was a stroke of brilliance, amassed a cult following in record time.As for the recipes, there are quite a lot of them that will be impossible to make without access to markets, like 99 Ranch in LA, that sell serious Asian food products. If you live in a city that has a Korean section, you have it made.There are plenty of really good recipes that don't require hard-to-find ingredients, as well as some that were a surprise to find in the book - like French Onion Soup (with a splash of Calvados), Pork Schnitzel, and Seared Scallops with Chive Beurre Blanc - but that fit in because they are integral to Choi's culinary journey.There are also a few that must be aimed at new cooks - like Roasted Sweet Potatoes (sweet potatoes, salt) and a standard Club Sandwich - because, otherwise, they are head-scratchers.That said, one of my favorite recipes in the book is one of the simplest, and thus the one I find myself making most often - Choi's spin on Ramen Noodles. Stupid-easy, but just plain good!Likewise, his recipe for Kalbi - easy and honestly beats any that I've had in a restaurant.Ultimately, Choi's book is not only a journey into his life and his cooking, but a culinary tour of LA's amazingly diverse, ever evolving food scene.

For starters an absorbing read that beautifully describes a vibrant diverse culture in a way that makes it familiar. It would be worth the purchase of that were all there was to it. The recipes that compliment each chapter are a bonus. Ingredients methods and alternatives are clearly presented and the results are wonderful. If you love Asian-Korean-Mexican food solo or in combination, try this. Chef Choi's voice is a bit like Bourdain's so be prepared for some language and some living on the edge tales..

The recipes I have made from this book have been good. I took away stars because I really dislike the layout. Recipes are thrown in throughout his story. This makes it really difficult to flip to the recipe you want to use (have to go to the index every time) or to just browse recipes to see what you feel like making. But I will say my family really enjoys the buttermilk pancakes from this book and it’s now my go to pancake.

I bought this book ostensibly for my husband, after he recommended I listen to Mr. Choi's NPR interview. The interview he gave on Fresh Air was smart and funny and engaging, and even though I don't live in a town with a bustling food truck population, I have read my fair share about them. This book is has great recipes, wonderful and at time heartbreaking stories from Mr. Choi's own life, and these great, color saturated photos. This is one book that I'd recommend the hardcover over the Kindle version, just so you can lay it out and pore over it. The recipes are varied, interesting, and for the novice as well as the pro. You may not want to buy it for your mom if she is offended by pot smoking and f-bombs, but everyone else will adore it. (Your mom will probably like it, too.) I love a cookbook that's as great to cook from as to read!

I discovered Roy Choi during a stay at The Line hotel in Los Angeles. Choi operates the hotel's eateries, including, "POT", located just off the hotel lobby. I was wowed by an Asian-fusion dinner at the restaurant, choosing from the bizarre menu offerings with help from a knowledgeable server. Although many of the ingredients were foreign to me, it was such an interesting and beautifully crafted affair. I also had an incredible meal via room service and breakfast in the lobby restaurant before departing. I was so impressed with the food that I researched the chef and found his book on Amazon when I got home. The book is very much in keeping to Choi's roots in LA's Koreatown, complete with many "doable" recipes and various stories from the chef's years growing up in the neighborhood.

Loved it. I was hungry all the time for his receipes. I heard his story on NPR which inspired me to get the book on my kindle. I like that he shared his life story as the books goes along. Would love to meet him or eat at his restaurants

Very entertaining read.

I haven't tried the recipes yet but enjoyed reading Roy's personal history. The recipes look doable since there are a number of Asian stores in my area.

I don't have a saltwater aquarium, yet. I bought this book to familiarize myself with it;, to see if I ever really want to set one up. I've had freshwater tanks regularly since 1999; other tanks since 1979. I currently own a 55gal, 10gal and a 5.5gal quarantine tank, which are cycling. I've read other books on the subject that don't stand up as well, as far as the knowledge contained. This book covers it all: from choosing a tank, setting it up and it delves into that often confusing topic of the nitrogen cycle or cycling. It even gives bio information on the fish and invertebrates to stock your tank. All in all, this is a great book to have.This book made the overwhelming understandable for me. I still don't know whether I want to set up a saltwater tank. Saltwater aquariums require more equipment and the tank environment isn't as forgiving, but if and when I do, this will be the book I refer to. I highly recommend it for new and seasoned saltwater aquarists to have on your shelf.

I work for a major pet store, and this book was required reading to get a grasp on the saltwater systems. Written by a marine biologist, I find it's one of the best books on the market for understanding the basics of the salt water setup. Saltwater Aquariums for Dummies walks you through FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) setups and coral/reef setups, describes different kinds of filters and protein skimmers, explains the nitrogen cycle, and gives some basic insight to the different needs of fish, invertebrates, and other marine denizens. I recommend this book to anyone interested in how saltwater aquariums work, whether they're setting up a tank or not. Before you buy a tank, a stand, filter, or water, buy the book!

I became interested in saltwater aquariums as a complete novice and the prospect of setting up the aquarium was both exciting and intimidating. I am a big fan of the "... for Dummies" series as beginner guides for personal hobbies. This book was extremely helpful in both the content and the organization of the information. The author provides practical advice on everything from choosing fish to maintaining water quality. I completed the book feeling I had a solid start on my dream of having a salt water aquarium. It is a must-have for beginner salt water aquarium enthusiasts.

I am a big fan of the "for dummies" series. While, I got some information out of this book, I felt as of it was a bit outdated and the information wasn't sufficient enough. I would recommend it to someone who is very new to the hobby but I wouldn't use it as your only source. I would also recommend you read the book by a computer so you can look up the fish and equipment discussed since the book doesn't provide very good visuals.

I'm a new aquarist. I bought 8 marine aquarium books from Amazon. I consider this one of the top books of the group and easily the easiest to read with a nice balance of information versus technical discussion. Not perfect, but definitely the one that I ended up making up my list of things I still needed to do. Not overly technical, as many of the books are. Easy read. Author is as good at writing as he is at being a marine biologist. Not perfect, but close. Could use some updating on lights and other areas, where the author either doesn't discuss the newest, better technology, or just barely covers it. I wish marine life discussions included color photos (instead of black and white drawings) and more pictures of different marine life. I'm already a big fan of the Dummies books and I always buy one when I'm trying to learn something new. This book is an excellent example of why everyone interested in new subject should by a Dummies book as part of their knowledge investigation.

This book is AWESOME!! Incredibly helpful and packed full of valuable information. Clear and well written, this book is (in my opinion) a must have for anyone passionate about saltwater aquariums, whether you are just starting out with your first tank, or otherwise.

I used to keep freshwater tribal fish. I've always been way of venturing in to meeting saltwater tanks. This book removed a lot of that fear. This book fires a great job of explaining how the saltwater aquarium work and Joe a novice can pick it up. I'm Lee's afraid and may well start a saltwater aquarium.

This book really broke things down for me and helped me decide whether a salt water tank was for me or not. It may be Daltwater tanks for dummies but it didn’t make me feel like a dummy.

Great reminders for me getting back into the hobby. Good updates. If you like "For Dummies" books, you will like this.

Even if French Country is not your style, the pictures are breathtaking. I love that Courtney not only included pictures of her home, and the holidays, glimpses of her gardens, and her story. I HIGHLY recommend this book, and I will enjoy reading it again and again. Great inspiration to incorporate some patina into my own home. GREAT job Courtney!! This is a book to be enjoyed for its beauty, and for the enthusiasm exuded through its text. It is delightfully written, as Courtney takes you through the key moments of her childhood where her love of flowers, the imperfections found in time-worn objects, and dream-inspiring home interiors (and secret gardens) were born. She also speaks lovingly about the cottage home she and her husband purchased in California while their children were still young, and how they put their mark on it over time and how it came to be so much more than a home.And all the while, on every page, those swoon-worthy photographs that I look forward to on her blog. And I think that’s what I love most about this book – I do enjoy the blog, but it is so hard to get lost in it because like any blog, you have to keep clicking from post to post and it just breaks up the experience into small chunks. But the book – oh the book is one to simply page through slowly, like taking a tour through the house and taking note of all the beautiful details, while understanding at last how it all fits together.I can’t think of any other home style book quite like French Country Cottage – for the reader it is an experience to savor. And for the author, truly a labor of love and a long-held dream come true!

To be clear, the house is stunning. It's a beautiful mix of old and new and the color palette is soft, subtle, and serene. There are flowers on about 99% of the pages. Some pages are just an entire close-up of a floral arrangement. Granted, it's eye candy, but the amount of repetition is not incredibly creative. Unless you have an enormous budget or access to an elaborate garden, no one can pull this off.

I preordered this book and couldn’t wait for it to arrive. It came this week, and did not disappoint. Ah, the pictures, and such careful detailed staging for each shot. They are effortlessly beautiful, natural, and mesmerizing. I follow Courtney’s blog, and after drooling over each picture, I will read her story and again enjoy these photos. To me, this book is like a great dessert after a fine meal....you don’t want to get to the last bite. Great job, Courtney! Love it! And, worth the wait!

I loved the photos and descriptions....it is a wonderful book and truly inspired me.....in fact, I started working on my own house...painter is on the way....and though I won't be painting things white....the book inspired me to move things around, and look at things just a bit differently....thank you for the book!!
