Review

“This is historical fiction at its best: J. Albert Mann braids evocative language and masterfully curated details in this compelling fictionalized account of the life of the young Margaret Higgins Sanger, who grew up to have a profound impact on the lives of so many." (Kirby Larson, Newbery Honor winner)“A riveting story about one of humanity’s great heroes, with deep resonance for today’s readers.” (Martha Brockenbrough, author of Alexander Hamilton: Revolutionary)“A moving, authentic portrayal of how the most stubborn and daring woman reformer in American history developed her nerve.” (Peter C. Engelman, author of A History of the Birth Control Movement in America)“Mann has created a sympathetic character in the rebellious Maggie. . . . An important, readable novel about Sanger, who changed the fate of millions of women through access to contraception.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Mann's fictional interpretation of the life of Planned Parenthood's founder, Margaret Sanger, offers a thoughtful, topical approach, making the agitator for women's rights an understandable young woman. . . . Mann does well in her portrayal of a family hard-pressed by poverty, and sets up Margaret's struggle with her parents' choices so that it reflects on the concerns she grappled with as an adult. Readers who enjoy historical fiction, and are interested in the women's rights movement's origins, will find this a sympathetic read.” (Booklist)"It is a tribute to Mann’s narrative approach that a reader who closes the cover without learning why Margaret Sanger is historically important will have seen through Maggie Higgins’ eyes how marriage snuffed out most women’s dreams in families of the working poor, and how even escape took an emotional toll that plucky girl novels too often overlook." (BCCB)“Mann convincingly depicts Maggie’s fervent emotions as she struggles to be a dutiful daughter and sibling while trying to hold on to her dream of being a doctor, rather than the expected future of becoming a wife, mother, and, possibly, teacher. Mann creates a strong feminist character in her fictional portrayal of Sanger.” (Publishers Weekly)"Each chapter of this compelling historical novel is poignant and meaningful. . . . Readers will not only be captivated by the storytelling but they will also gain a historical perspective that will shed light on why Margaret Sanger became a champion for women’s and reproductive rights. VERDICT: A fascinating biographical novel about birth control activist and founder of what eventually became Planned Parenthood that belongs on most shelves." (School Library Journal)

J Albert Mann has done an incredible job portraying the life of Margaret Sanger, humanizing her so that readers understand her drive and motivations. The author is a master of historical fiction, creating a brilliant and sympathetic portrait of a woman who changed our world, and reminding us how precious our reproductive freedoms are. I’ve been recommending this book to everyone, particularly to the high schoolers I teach!

Impeccable research mixed with heartfelt and compelling storytelling. Flawless writing. I read this book first then again with my daughter. We both loved it and have had numerous discussions already about it. Not only an important book but a necessary one. Highly recommend ⭐️

I didn't know much about Margaret Sanger as a young woman. J. Albert Mann has done a wonderful job showing what motivated her to become the woman she did. You can see how the poverty and hardship and inadequate medical treatment compelled Margaret to do more as an adult. Also, the book is surprisingly funny in places. A wonderful book for young people to read and learn about a remarkable woman.

This was such a good read! It’s a historical fiction novel about Maggie Higgins (aka Margaret Sanger, the mother of birth control) from when she was 11-19 years old. I felt like Maggie was my own best friend telling me what life was like before women had birth control. The book is well-researched and the author really captures Margaret Sanger's larger-than-life spirit. Although Maggie’s mother's life was pretty grim, Maggie's humor, spirit, and love for her mother shines throughout the book. It’s clear Maggie will go on to do great things. Very inspiring!

I am a LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) and the title of this book caught my eye. Although I am a "woman of a certain age", I purchased this book to "get the beginning story of Margaret Sanger's amazing journey". And amazing it was! The author was able to bring Sanger's "early journey" to life in such a realistic and beautiful way. I am recommending this book to friend's with children and friend's without children as well~! I am also purchasing copies to keep in my office to share with clients. I could not put it down!

As a young girl, Margaret Sanger dreamed of a world in which girls were could wear pants. Doesn’t seem like much to ask, but growing up poor in the late 1800s in Corning, New York, meant any dream was a luxury, especially for girls. With beautiful prose and meticulous research, J. Albert Mann brings to life young Margaret in a way that makes us better understand how and why the smart, complicated, driven little girl became the type of woman who could change the world. So many of the opportunities women have today, are a result of the determination and tireless work of Margaret Sanger. Every girl should know about her.

Fist Stick Knife Gun: A Personal History of Violence, by Geoffrey Canada Jamar Nicholas

From Publishers Weekly

Canada, a legendary educator and crusader for inner-city-youth, first published in 1995 his revelatory account of the daunting push toward violent behavior that was a part of his Bronx childhood. This graphic adaptation by Nicholas works as a kind of youth-friendly summary of that book's conclusions. Canada's thoughtful, no-nonsense narrative begins in the Bronx in the late 1950s, after his father left him, his mother, and two brothers to fend for themselves. The spine of the story is not so much the broad array of violence on display in a neighborhood suffering from postwar white flight and increases in crime, but Canada's surgical analysis of the stages of violence and the strictly codified strata that reigned on his street and in his school. Helped by Nicholas's dramatic but low-key illustrations, Canada describes how he graduated from one level of violence to the next in a sort of ladder of self-protection. This inexorable evolution is dismaying enough before Canada moves ahead to show how those codes of violence eventually collapsed under an influx of guns. This is exactly the sort of broadly appealing and gripping nonfiction graphic novel that librarians need to be adding to their shelves. (Oct.) (c) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

Gr 7 Up-A comic adaptation of Canada's 1995 memoir illustrates 10 situations from his childhood and teen years on the streets of the South Bronx. Based on the author's personal experiences, this study of the cycle of violence explores the destructive power of escalating hostilities on individuals and communities. If you want to know how to save our children, how to make our schools better, how to change, grow and heal our communities, read Fist Stick Knife Gun: A Personal History of Violence. Then get out of your chair, get in your car or on your bike or even on your skates, go to the nearest school, step inside and volunteer to help change the children's worlds.Geoffrey Canada is the man behind the Harlem Project. His mind, his drive, his desire to help children, parents and the community made the Harlem project a reality. And Geoffrey Canada knows his audience; he lived in abject poverty, the son of a single mom in a neighborhood where value was assigned based on how well you fought.Geoffrey Canada's approach points the way to saving all the children who live in neighborhoods owned and operated by drug dealers, drug users, robbers, muggers, burglars and rapists -- killers of every description. My take on his core thesis is you cannot change children who live in these communities just by working inside the 4 walls of a school; you MUST change the community, reach out to the parents, help them where they are so they can reach out and change their own worlds, one step at a time, one day at a time.

Find this short read helped me understand how males and perhaps females, form their roles in the pecking order from alpha to subordinate. While this was based upon a story of growing up on the mean streets of New York, the experiences I had growing up in the Midwest were familiar on the school bus, the football field, or on the job.

After reading "Whatever It Takes" about the Harlem Children's Zone, I wanted to read more about its founder. This memoir explains how Canada's own experiences growing up poor, on a dangerous street in a NYC ghetto have helped shape his life and his approach to building HCZ. He describes his education - both in school and in the streets, and addresses the escalation of violence in these poverty-stricken communities. Though I think he'd love to get guns off the streets, he seems very realistic about the likelihood of that happening, pointing out that current gun control programs like buybacks won't work. He also describes the unintended consequences of "tough on crime" laws like mandatory sentencing. I was never shy about driving through bad neighborhoods in Chicago, and had my own strategies to deal with threats (stopping at red lights was optional for me, in some circumstances), but I now have a much better understanding of what he's dealing with in trying to lift families out of poverty and get their children safely through college. This book is essential reading for anybody who wants to work in a field addressing these problems, from social workers to educators to politicians, and all would do well to examine carefully what Canada is finding works - and what doesn't.

Much like the book Our America, Fist Stick Knife Gun is a nonfiction story that both teens and adults find captivating. Though this version is a graphic novel, that is an advantage, for teenage reluctant readers in particular will be more apt to read it as a result. I've seen with my own eyes young men read this work and identify with it, and, more importantly, learn from it.Though the artwork is rather straight forward and simple, I can't imagine any other style more befitting. Canada's story is inspiring, brutal, and eye-opening. For some, this book offers a glimpse into a world unknown but no less important. For others, they will see a kindred spirit who made it out alive and is now helping others.I truly recommend this work for all readers of all abilities.~Scott William Foley, author of Andropia

In light of recent headlines about gun control, I have been watching, and reading, articles with a renewed interest in the topic. *Spoiler Alert: The author is for gun control.I disagree on several points with the author politically, but I can not argue with his experience, which I find drives most of the value in this book. It's his story, and told through his eyes, there is a growing problem with inner city violence. The author successfully pulls you into his world and you begin to get a real sense of a little piece of daily life of a young man growing up in a poor neighborhood. The narrative is well written, but don't expect any answers inside these pages. That's not the intent of the book. Instead you can expect to glean an additional perspective in a much larger issue, and on this point, it delivers.

I am required to read this book for an assignment in my university Criminology class. I would have never imagined that I would become so engulfed in the story of a “poor little black boy growing up in the ghetto” but I have. This book tells an amazing story of a true hero and how be beat the odds of poor America and has devoted his life to the same streets he grew up on in efforts to save the future generations. I would recommend this book to anyone.

An eye-opening, but not preachy, book about how things in the American education system could be made better (and in fact has been, by the efforts of dedicated people like Geoffrey Canada). It's not a how-to book, as this is an autobiography combined with advocacy. It's a definite must-read for those who are curious about gun violence (despite your personal views) and those who want to get a glimpse into a life of a child growing up in the American ghetto.

Review

This debut novel is a story of loss, love, and friendship, about a teenager coming to terms with the past and dealing with repressed memories that are resurfacing...Readers will find Otis relatable and endearing in his first-person perspective of first love and heartbreak, as well as his unwavering loyalty to his friends. Meg and Dara round out a cast of well-developed characters who have extensive troubles of their own. Most teenagers will find a little bit of themselves in this well-executed work; a must-have for most YA collections.—School Library Journal (starred reviews)The inability to let go of the past pushes all three white teens beyond their comfort zones into uncharted territory, Garner slowly and steadily guiding readers through these journeys. A heavy read weighted by intense emotions and grief, the novel sifts through tough memories, searching for the silver lining.—Kirkus ReviewsOtis’ journey—as a competitive swimmer and as a grieving brother—is a poignant one...It’s tough-talking, reckless Dara who will intrigue readers. Her struggles with her father, her sexuality, and the dreams deferred because of her accident complement Otis’ story, elevating this to a narrative as much about human connection as it is about sports.—BooklistGarner’s debut sensitively portrays Meg and Otis’s bruised emotions, both recovering from deep loss. Though the description of Mason’s accident is a gut-punch in its realism, much of the plot unfolds predictably. The novel’s strongest moments go to Dara, whose no-holds-barred personality—“she was the human equivalent of a Venus flytrap”—livens and complicates the novel.—Publishers WeeklyOtis is a refreshingly authentic male protagonist who will win readers over . . . [A]n uplifting story about resilience and the power of relationships.—BookPageIn her debut novel, Garner examines the depths of loss and despair. Ultimately, Dara and Otis and Meg come to realize that hope, though fragile, is present in celebration of the simple things in life...the subtle and nuanced character development and the slow realization of how loss must be confronted create a believable and compelling read.—VOYALike most good summer reads, Phantom Limbs by Paula Garner is a delicious slow burn...Garner’s depiction of teenage sexuality is spot on, but even more so is the way she captures and crystallizes a very specific teenage experience.—Lambda LiteraryTragedy cuts deep, and every character in this book has scars—some terribly visible and others under the surface—but they are all beautiful. Paper Towns fans take note, this will be your new favorite book.—Shelf Awareness ProGarner does a fine job cultivating the book’s titular theme, with Dara’s phantom-limb pain, Otis’s grief-filled memories, and Meg’s PTSD...evoking in readers the acute ache of losing something, or someone, vital. As her debut powerfully mines the depths of such loss, it also charts the terrain of healing that follows, leaving readers with hope via Otis’s wise insights: “If something is unbearable, then how do you bear it? It’s an oxymoron. And yet…Somehow I was bearing it.”—Horn BookThe nuanced way that Garner deals with loss is not only beautifully done, but it’s thoughtful and insightful. Phantom Limbs is a quietly affecting, well-written gem of a book that will resonate with readers, long after the last page has been reached. A definite YA standout for 2016.—Romantic Times

GRADE: AThree years ago Otis's toddler brother died at the home of his next door neighbor/best friend/first love Meg. Shortly afterward, Meg's family moved cross country and he hasn't heard from her since, with the exception of Facebook stalking. Enter Dara, his self-appointed swim coach, who lost her arm in a shark attack. Her goal: make Otis an Olympian. Now Meg's coming back to town and about to turn Otis's world up, down and every which way.PHANTOM LIMBS tackles the experiences several characters enduring PTSD through the eyes on sixteen-year-old Otis. Every high school kid should have an Otis, a thoughtful friend who doesn't drink, will take the keys of partiers who do and will drop everything if needed. He's such a good guy. He's funny, smart. A poet who thinks about sex a LOT. Though at times in a politically incorrect manner, he's never disrespectful. He knows boundaries.Meg. Wounded, even more than Otis by the loss of his brother. She doesn't say enough or let Otis in.Dara, a hot mess, maddening but easy to understand why.Otis's parents are wonderfully flawed, especially his mother. But what mother wouldn't be, after losing a son in such a tragic manner.Debut writer Paula Garner gave Otis such a unique, ironic voice. His sense of humor, often warped, kept PHANTOM LIMBS from being a downer. At times I laughed and cried in the same paragraph. Garner is a guarantee preorder for me.THEMES: PTSD, grief, sexuality, LGBT, friendship, family, siblings, parents, loss, sports, swimmingPHANTOM LIMBS is one of the best books I've read about characters living with PTSD with a story that wasn't about PTSD or trauma.

Otis, Meg and Dara make up this absolutely lovely cast of characters in Garner’s touching debut novel. A story of loss, grief and life, there is something magical about this book.Otis. Sigh. What an absolutely charming young man. Garner beautifully captured the voice of a sixteen year old boy. He is wry, conflicted, painfully hurt, sensitive, very in tune with his emotions, yet he possesses a quiet strength. His brother Mason died in a tragic accident three years ago and nothing has been the same since. He lost his best friend Meg, right at the time the two thirteen year olds began to fall in love. His parents are irreparably damaged and just so broken. All he has left is Dara, his swimming coach with issues of her own.Dara lost part of her arm in a horrible accident, thus ending her hopes of being an Olympic swimmer. She’s angry, sarcastic, smart, flawed, brutally honest but above all she is real. Her friendship with Otis is one of the most poignant and gorgeous relationships I’ve ever witnessed. They just get each other in a way that no one else does. It truly touched me deep within my heart.Meg was Otis’ best friend and for a short while, his first love. Her and her family moved away after Mason died and the two never spoke again. But now, she’s coming back. What does this mean for Otis and Meg? How does Dara fit into all of this? This book deals with some heavy issues; figuring out how to deal with ones sexuality, death, divorce, and mainly, how to move on after such a devastating loss without forgetting about the past. Is it possible to move on and still have hope for the future?Even though the issues are heavy, Garner has a beautiful writing style. She truly captures all the feelings teenagers have; confusion, an overwhelming surge of hormones and new feelings, frustration, emotional upheaval. Her dialogue reads true and sounds like teenagers talking to each other, there is nothing false or stilted about it.I literally cannot say enough good things about this captivating book and about Garner as an author. I cannot wait to see more from her and I predict that this book will be huge. I know that I will hold these precious characters in my own heart for a very long time. So go, pre order your copy now.

Phantom Limbs is a wonderful novel that deals with love, loss, and letting go. Each character is beautifully written, and Garner allows them room to breathe and grow. The stakes aren't life-or-death high: it's more like a slice-of-life introspection that focuses much more on the people than the plot. I read through it one sitting, staying up waaaay past my bedtime because I wouldn't be satisfied until I knew everything. Meg could grate a little at times, and I thought that the very, very end (no spoilers) was not the editorial choice I would have made, but these are ultimately minor complaints that did not detract from my enjoyment of this book at all. Highly recommend! It's a nice breather from epic fantasy or action-adventure YA that reminds you that contemporary can be just as memorable, well-crafted, and haunting.

Love of words, turn of phrase, emotion delivered in black and white... Phantom Limbs. Paula Garner has written a story that will stay with you long after you read the last word. It's a story about people you know, maybe even you - to want when you shouldn't, grieve for you never had, and desire, need - long after the longing should be done, for love and things lost. Excellent.

Paula Garner did such an amazing job bringing the 16-year-old narrator known as Otis to life. The dialogue is also fabulous.

Great characters and story. Enjoyable read!

Awesome book for Y. A and adults

Such a beautiful story, and lovely writing. Definitely one of my top picks in YA for 2016. Every page had sentences that were so well crafted, I just wanted to read them again and again.

Each Journey Begins With a Single Step: The Taoist Book of Life, by Deng Ming-Dao

Review

"Deng Ming-Dao's collection relies on three major sources: the Daodejing, given in its complete translation; the Yiying, said to have been written by Confucius; and examples from the Chinese poetic tradition. Some experiences will bring sorrow and pain, yet even these are shown to be part of the Tao, the mysterious Way that is said to lead through heaven and earth and is open to all." - Foreword Reviews"This collection of Taoist sayings is organized around simple and profound concepts, such as the road or path, truth or reason, speech and steps, or process. It's the multiple meanings that derive from this combination of concepts that will speak to each individual. Deng describes life as a journey in poetic form, offering the primary sources of these sayings." --Library Journal"Successful Taoist author Ming-Dao has gathered excerpts from The Tao Te-Ching, The Yijing, and Chinese poetic tradition (derived mostly from 300 Tang Poems) in order to create a lyrical (Melancholy spring wind, pained at river sunset.), poignant (My hair turns white in this foreign land ... and shivering animals in withered grass on every side will accompany my worried face.), and insightful (A good fighter is never angry.) journey through Taoism. Each carefully chosen phrase is a brush stroke which paints part of a picture that elevates as it comes more and more into focus. Ming-Dao's mastery of the words of Tao serves him well in this small but powerful book. He includes a glossary at the end for those less well-versed than he is in the subject. The book can be read front to back or randomly with equal gratification. Of course, it can also be used as an oracle by customers who are inclined toward psychic guidance. It will be perfect for holiday shoppers."Even when the chariot is before a mountain,There will be a road. --Proverb" --Anna Jedrziewski, Retailing Insights August 2018"A marvelously engaging and innovative omnibus! Deng Ming Dao maps here the way of China's perennial philosophies. A wise and trusty mentor, he lets the landscape, within us all and all around us, speak for itself, so that we may each find our own way with this timeless guide." --Gary Gach, author of Pause, Breathe, Smile

This is an invaluable book to have as a researcher or if you want to have a great look into Guam's past. In addition to the author's detailed accounts, she also included a diary of a local from the southern village of Merizo, or Malesso. The villager's account incorporates the daily happenings in Merizo not long before World War II. There were a few fold-out maps and charts about agriculture. Of all my Guam books, this is quite invaluable as it is written from the author's perspective as opposed to mostly research interpretations/data.

Good condition.
