Unlike any other book about blockchain, it’s filled with funny, interesting stories but still let you understand what it is. Clearly explain. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to understand this technology that we all should learn sooner than later!

I keep hearing about “blockchain,” but whenever I try to learn about it, I can’t figure it out. Until now. This book really made me “feel” what blockchain is all about. Now I know that I can talk about it like an intelligent person, and it also gives me some tools for imagining how it might work in my own business. I highly recommend it.

Wow! This book beautifully clarified a subject matter that I had long ago dismissed as impossible for me to understand! And- it made it clear why it's so important to understand it. Bravo!

Wonderful book for any business minds trying to unpack the potential (and differentiation) of blockchain technologies for innovation and future offerings, Highly recommended.

When cyrptocurrency prices shot up in 2017, a flood of books on blockchain and related topics hit the shelves. Some were good, most were rushed and flawed, some were near worthless. This book is in the last category and 18 months too late. One problem is the author does not understand, or at least never tries to explain, the technology. Of course there is room for books that explain implications of technology without discussing the underlying theory, but this book fails in that as well. The one aspect the author is clear about is that the blockchain is a ledger. There is lots of material on the history of ledgers, and discussions of how ledgers are useful. For example, one of his major blockchain use cases is land registry in Honduras. There's no doubt that a land ownership ledger is useful. That's precisely the 1858 idea of Robert Torrens, whose system spread rapidly throughout the world. But Torrens Title is not a blockchain in any sense. It's a centralized, unencrypted ledger maintained by the government. All the problems in Honduras could be solved by Torrens. Now there are reasons why a blockchain could be useful for Honduran land registry, but they are not discussed in the book. They cannot be, because the author has laid none of the groundwork. We might imagine that Hondurans distrustful of the government began their own public, decentralized, encrypted ledger--a blockchain--to record land ownership. They would need no permission, no one could stop them. If enough people used it voluntarily, buyers might start insisting on blockchain title, or at least examining the blockchain for possible title disputes. If so, sellers would have an incentive to obtain and defend blockchain title. If enough people did this for long enough, the blockchain could become the authoritative legal proof of land ownership. The benefits of the blockchain, as opposed to the simple ledger, is it requires no trusted central authority and no coercion. Once in place, it has strong protections against corruption. These are the things a blockchain book should discuss, not the benefits of a ledger. The author soon runs out of examples of useful ledgers, but instead of delving deeper into blockchain he starts discussing all kinds of things that are at best tangential. The cryptocurrency bitcoin uses a blockchain, so all digital currencies are topics for discussion, whether or not they use blockchains. Digital currencies are used to finance some distributed autonomous organizations, so those get chapters. Distributed autonomous organizations are pursuing some cool ideas--possibly visionary, possibly deluded--and those make fun topics. The result of this topic drift is the book resembles a random assortment of feature articles on ideas on blockchain, digital currency, cryptography, game theory and related field that could have been written anytime in the last decade. There's little unifying theme, and the articles themselves are pretty superficial.I recommend you either find a good book on blockchain that explains the technology and its possible applications, or a good book on implications of trustless pseudonymous value exchange for economics and society.

I've been doing a deep dive into blockchain for a couple of years now, and this book was a refreshing take on an enormous concept. Blockchain is becoming an integral part of business, but not yet consumer life. The author does a great job of showcasing applications for both accessibly and imaginatively, while weaving blockchain 101 throughout.First off, it's very well-written. I can't stand books where I pick apart the writing and can't get into the zone, and the author is very good. I even have a hard time reading on an airplane, and this book was a welcome addition to one of my flights.Second, I would say that this quick read would be great for nontechnical folks or beginners to blockchain who need to know what the big deal is in a short amount of time. It's also useful for folks like myself who are are tech savvy through a business or sustainability lens, but not necessarily coders.I also liked how much time he spent talking about blockchain through a sustainability lens, which I hadn't encountered in a book yet. The potential for blockchain to disrupt business, ownerships, and even how we govern ourselves was so uplifting. I wasn't expecting it, but this would also be good to read if you need a pick me up with all the sh*t that's going on in the world and/or are generally interested in sustainability.

#5,385 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I normally like AR books and I didnt dislike this one its just not a favorite. I felt we were missing a whole lot and the way it started made it seem that way. Also, the sleep sex was a little off putting sorta. At least enough worth mentioning. Maybe not off putting but a little weird considering he didnt really penetrate her much...not enough to de-virginize her. Is that a word? :) She was still mostly asleep and although she kinda woke up and knew what was going on meh not the best scene for me. Then again this IS smut sooo there ya go.

I read this book in less than 30 minutes. We've come to expect shorty, filthy, smutty stories from AR. However, in each book whether they are complete strangers or have known each other for years, the characters still get to know each other. There was no development between these two characters getting to know each other.I get that her parents are workaholics, but I'm sure they would eventually realize their child was missing. Also Lincoln knows absolutely nothing about Sophia and vice versa. In the beginning I LOVED everything AR has written. I would constantly re-read everything. However, lately their books are hit or miss for me, and sadly lately they've all been a miss

This is another short insta-love story by Alexa Riley. Sophia is on her way to Paris when she meets Lincoln Gray, the wealthy owner of the airlines who falls for her the moment he sees her. Lincoln is all bossy and used to getting whatever he wants, while Sophia is younger and naive.I'm all for a sexy story of love at first sight, but I personally like a little more background on my characters. I like to get to know them so I can fall in love right along beside them.Overall, Flight Risk is an okay but very quick read. It's told from dual POVs and has a happy ending.3.0-3.5 stars

Sophia has lived a sheltered life with parents who are so caught up in themselves and their work, that their neglect of her emotional needs as scarred her. The first chance she got the taste of freedom, she decides to travel the world and try to experience life to its fullest. Nothing and no one in her life has prepared her for Lincoln, the intense and overwhelming possessive alpha male she meets at the airport, and the instant attraction she feels for him.Lincoln saw her from across the room and all her innocence shines like a beacon to him, bringing out these intense, possessive, protective and raw emotions for her and right there and then he decides that she is his, and starts putting things in place to claim her. Their sexual escapades are raw and explicit that will have you craving a little for yourself.

I'm used to these quick, hot and dirty AR specialties but I was so confused. I honestly thought this one was too rushed and too quick. I couldn't figure out some key points that brought the story together. Usually I feel like the book may be short and sweet but it is always complete... I just didn't get that with this one.But that aside, I loved the main characters. I picked this super, just naive girl that is waiting for someone to show her some direction in life and Lincoln is that man for the job. Both of them knew it at first sight of course. The chemistry is there and the heat is there. Just wish the story came around full circle on this one.

Lincoln, Lincoln, Lincoln....mmmmm, mmmm, mmmmm. He see's Sophia in the airport and since he own everything there, he has her "detained", so he can talk to her and vacation with her where she wants to go. She's very sheltered and not very well loved by her so-called parents. These two are just explosively sweet and maybe one of my favorite AR couples. This book definitely had one of my favorite AR lines in it, can't quote it because I don't want to get flagged, but something about the Eiffel Tower, a beret & a croissant....lmao. And of course we get 2 epilogues, one in 2 years & then one in 10 years. Loved them and loved this safe, but sexy read with the over the top alpha.

Short and smutty and sweet (if you like your alphas intense, dirty talking, and UBER possessive). I liked it, I just wish it had been longer. It has two epilogues, but I felt like the story ended abruptly. I would've liked to know more about the aftermath of Sophia leaving - like how her parents reacted, etc. I also would've liked some more background on Lincoln other than that he was rich and ex-military. But it was a satisfying hour of reading and I will continue to read anything Alexa Riley puts out. (3.5 out of 5 wine glasses)

Right off the bat we got the innocent naïve Sophia who just wants to travel and enjoy life.. her whole life has been school, parents ignoring her.. and being sheltered by them.. so she does what any person does BUYS A TICKET TO PARIS!! (i would love to go there so i would also lol)she gets stopped by security by a protective alpha male who owns this air port when he first sees her.. he wants her and well he gets what he wants..

'Flight Risk' is a short, hot, insta-love story. once you start reading you just can't stop thats what Alexa Riley do to you.... I hated to go take my sister to school or go to my internship because I just wanted to read Lincoln and Sophia hot and sexy storyRead it! you'll love it as much as I did ;)

The Cavern domed around us and bit into the air with jagged crystal teeth. It smelled of too many people all in one place, but it was cool and misty beside the tall waterfall that gushed in through a crack. Atish, one of my few jinni friends, handed me a glass orb the size of a plum. It was hollow and clear, like the hundreds of other orbs nestled in everyone else’s palms. It weighed next to nothing, and I was afraid it would float away if I breathed out too fast. We stood along the canal that divided the Cavern into two similar hemispheres. The canal began at the waterfall, snaked through the glittering jinni city, and poured into the Lake of Fire. A web of tall gas lamps kept the city pulsing in bright, golden light. The jinn called them wishlights. Spreading outward from the canal were the homes and buildings made by the jinn, some stacked and sloping up the curved walls. There were more jinn, more buildings, and more scents and colors here than in my human village in the mountains, and I wasn’t sure I would ever become accustomed to the crowd. Today was worse than usual. I had to twist my shoulders sideways to avoid brushing up against anyone, and when that didn’t work and I found myself face-in-armpit with a tall stranger, I would hold my breath and slink away as fast as I could. A few times, Shirin smiled apologetically at me, as though she understood what was troubling me but could do nothing to change it. It was the day of the Breaking, something that happened once a year. All jinn except my twin, Najwa, who was still in the Baghdad palace, had come to the canal. As it was my first time witnessing the Breaking, Atish and Shirin guided me, like a lost child, to a row of carts where an army of old women stood handing out the glass orbs. Atish was the newest member of the Shaitan, the elite branch of the jinni army, and Shirin was still waiting for her chance to be marked into the Corps of Physicians. Both of them had been friends with Najwa before I arrived, and had saved me when I’d made a mess of things before. Alhamdulillah for Najwa’s friends, because without them I’d be sniffing jinni armpits all day. “See?” Atish asked. He pointed at the dozens of children lining the canal. Some leaned out over the water, holding up their little orbs of glass. But theirs were lit from within, each a different color. One boy, taller than the rest, pulled back his arm and threw his orb into the waterfall. The ball of light plopped into the canal and bobbed to the surface before floating downstream. Seconds later, a spray of colored orbs attacked the waterfall as the rest of the children sent theirs flying. By twos and threes, they floated past where I stood, pressed between Atish and Shirin. Each one was still whole, still glowing, like soap bubbles in sunlight. “How do they not break?” I asked. “Magic,” Atish said wickedly. I snorted in response and rubbed my thumb over the slick surface of my own orb. “Show me what I’m supposed to do, oh great wise man.” He held his orb up to his nose and shut his eyes. A moment later, a faint pop came from his hands, followed by a golden flame that grew from within the orb. “Easy.” He winked at me. Beside me, Shirin groaned. “That does nothing for her, you know.” She leaned in close. “You’re supposed to think of something you regret, something that is keeping you from moving on. It could be something as small as lying about what you ate for breakfast, or, you know . . .” She didn’t have to finish. I knew she was referring to the wish I’d made on Najwa. When I first met Najwa, I’d been on my way to Baghdad to marry Prince Kamal. I was desperate to avoid marrying the prince, because I wanted to be with my little brother Yashar. When a jinni showed up at my window, I thought she was an answer to my prayers. I grabbed her, wished on her, and made her take my place. What I didn’t know then was that I was making a Fire Wish--a wish demanded by one jinni from another. Basically, I enslaved Najwa and stole her life from her. It’s hard to recover from doing something like that to anyone, especially your sister. “But the point is,” Shirin continued, “you put your bad memory in here, where it can’t get out, and then you send it to the lake.” “Why to the lake? What’s supposed to happen to it there?” “It shrivels and dies,” Atish said. “No.” Shirin shook her head. “It disintegrates. It’ll float out there until it comes across one of the flames. Then the flames will break the glass and absorb the weight of the memory.” “And then I won’t remember it anymore?” I asked. I wasn’t sure forgetting any of my mistakes was a good thing. How would I know who I was if I forgot what I had done? “You’ll remember it,” she said. “But it won’t drag you down anymore.” “Which raises the question,” Atish said with a teeth-flashing grin, “what could I have done that I regret this year?” I gulped, not sure how to respond, which annoyed me. He was teasing me, and I liked it--which annoyed me even more. Shirin took my hand in hers, palm outstretched. “Just hold up the orb, like Atish did, and send the memory into the orb. It’s like recording a memory in a crystal shard. Only this is more symbolic.” The jinn can store memories in crystals, which they revisit whenever they want to. It was useful, but my first experience as witness to such a memory had been morbid and shocking. I wasn’t in a hurry to to through that again. “I haven’t recorded any memories. Ever.” “You just think about it, then wish it into the glass. It’s not that hard. I mean, all those children did it,” she said. I nodded, and stared into the clear ball. The orbs from the children’s memories floated past, lighting my orb from behind. If they could do it, so could I. But lighting it wasn’t the hard part. I had to choose one bad memory. Why only one? I could fill up an entire box of these little balls each year.

This second book in the Jinni Wars series has twin sisters, one with newly discovered Jinni powers, fighting a war on several fronts. Evocative settings, unique characters, and palace intrigue mix in this magical tale. The visualizations feel very real and bring to life a dangerous but exciting new world. If you like genies with your fantasy novels, try this story.

Several reviews I'd read stated they were annoyed by Zayele in this book and that it wasnt as good as the first, so I was skeptical, but...I loved it! Better than the first! Definitely worth the read.I didn't mind the alternating chapters as much in this one. Maybe because I knew the characters better? This book kept me interested the entire time!

I am really enjoying this series. It is very imaginative and I like that while it's fantastical, it has some basis in mythology and doesn't involve some dystopian universe somewhere. Blind Wish is as good as Fire Wish and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Loved, loved, loved the sequel! I would love to read more from this author

This book was not nearly as interesting as the first one. Sad day :/It's good! Just not as good as the first novel in the series.

***Review posted on The Eater of Books! blog***The Blind Wish by Amber LoughBook Two of the Jinni Wars seriesPublisher: Random House Books for Young ReadersPublication Date: July 14, 2015Rating: 3 starsSource: ARC sent by the publisherSummary (from Goodreads):Two sisters. A war. And the wish to end regret. . . . The magical, evocative follow-up to The Fire Wish. The war: The lies that started the conflict are in the open now, but the war between the humans and the jinn is as bitter as ever—and becoming far more treacherous. The sisters: Najwa and Zayele have just learned they’re half-jinni, half-human twins. Najwa is now the jinni representative at the human palace, working to bring peace. But her new role comes at a price—she’s no longer allowed alone with her cherished Prince Kamal. And as Zayele adjusts to life among the jinn, she discovers that she’s a magus, one of the most powerful jinn in the Cavern. Suddenly, she’s thrown into special training, and the strongest young men in the army are competing to be paired up with her.The wish: Once again, Zayele makes a wish. A wish that she doesn’t think can possibly go wrong. A wish that neither sister could imagine would change the outcome of the war. What I Liked:Ah! I just realized that this book is a July 14th release, not July 28th. When did that change?! I'm kind of meticulous when it comes to my review schedule, so this review is totally out of place (it's with the July 28th reviews, not the July 14th reviews, ugh)! Anyway, I guess in the long run, that's a good thing. This book is heading your way even faster! In this novel, Zayele attempts to wish her half-brother Yashar into good health - she wants to cure his blindness, which was brought on in the desert (so it was kind of her fault, which is why she is desperate to heal him). But Zayele is no healer, and the wish goes poorly. Yashar is brought to the Cavern, and Zayele is now training like she should have been - as a magus. Meanwhile, Najwa is forced to avoid Prince Kamal, as he has accepted the position of vizier. With the war looming, Najwa must discover who is the third player in the war, the third side that is sabotaging the jinn efforts for peace. Neither sister can prepare for - or stop - the impending force of war that crashes upon the jinn - and the humans. While I'm giving this book three stars, I actually really enjoyed the book. The story was great, if not a little slow. Lough digs deep into the story, and pushes along the series. Now that everyone knows about Najwa and Zayele, the sisters can each do their part and helping the jinn find peace with the humans - and stopping the war. Each sister has a distinct role to play.I usually don't like books split in two, with dual perspective, especially when it's not a guy/girl romantic pairing (or some sort of romantic pairing). In this case, it's third-person sister/sister dual perspective, which I didn't mind in The Fire Wish. But I didn't really like the dual perspective in this book, and you'll see why in the next section. It wasn't bad, but I didn't like Zayele in this book.I really like Najwa. She is depressed throughout this book, missing Faisal (her mentor), her mother that she never knew, and of course, Kamal. It's like everything has been taken away from her, and she has no one - not even her new sister, who forgets about her for most of the book (one of the reasons why I didn't like Zayele in this book). Najwa has lost so much, and is still fighting for her people. She is a million times stronger than her sister, through physically/magically, one wouldn't think so.There is romance, though the romance between Atish and Zayele is more prominent than the one between Kamal and Najwa. Kamal and Najwa's romance is bittersweet, and it's constantly there, but neither of them can act on their feelings while Kamal is vizier, so physically, their romance is stoppered. Atish and Zayele are training to be a Dyad (kind of like parabatai in The Mortal Instruments). A Dyad is a member of the Shaitan (warrior - Atish) and a magus (powerful jinn in terms of magic - Zayele). The plot is a bit slow, but things take off like a rocket in the last one hundred pages or so. The climax creeps up quickly and the story is over before you know it. High stakes, high action, towards the end! Make it to the end and you'll see that it's worth reading this one, despite the slow pacing of the first half of the book. What I Did Not Like:Zayele. I did NOT like her in this book, for so many reasons. One, she's selfish. She selfishly assumed that she could "fix" her blind half-brother, that he would want to be "fixed". She couldn't "fix" him AND he didn't want her to try. She tried anyway - selfish! And failed miserably. And then she had the nerve to get angry with everyone else when Yashar is brought to the Cavern to be treated (she made his blindness worse). She acts like it's everyone else's fault but her own. Zayele does not ever take responsibility to her actions. And then there's the fact that she's practically rewarded for being a stupid and powerful magus. Yes, she needs training, but she is so impulsive and ruins things time and time again. She deserves to till soil or something! She is SUCH a spoiled, conceited person! She's also very entitled. Being the more powerful of the two sisters, she just assumes that she's powerful enough to do this or that, or that she can do this or that without needing permission. She is only concerned about using her jinn magic and indirectly showing off.Poor Najwa! She has little magic, yet being a jinn is all she's ever known. And then her sister takes over her life, and is now a much more powerful jinn than Najwa could ever be. So heartbreaking for Najwa. Throw in the fact that Zayele is the WORST SISTER EVER, never remembering her sister throughout the book. Najwa is suffering from jinn depression and all Zayele thinks about is her powers and her upcoming Dyad bonding and basically everything that doesn't have to do with Najwa, or even the war. Najwa serves the jinn over and over, but Zayele is in this for the fun and romance. Her Dyad is going to be the boy she is falling for. Good for her. It's obvious that I liked Najwa a lot more than Zayele. I just didn't like Zayele in this book. I struggled with her in The Fire Wish too. She's just a terrible person, forcing wishes on people that don't want them. Stop being selfish! So, yes, this book loses two stars (it might have gotten five - at least four!) because of Zayele.Would I Recommend It:Despite my severe dislike of Zayele, I'd still recommend this book. I LOVED The Fire Wish, and I definitely enjoyed this book... minus Zayele. Too bad her perspective covered half the book (alternating chapters with Najwa). Najwa's story was more fleshed out, real, raw, developed. Zayele seemed like a toddler flailing around from start to finish. But hey, you might like her more than I did, who knows!Rating:3.5 stars -> rounded down to 3 stars. I hope there is another book in this series? Though I can see this series ending as it does, because the ending of this book was quite satisfactory.

Amber Lough doesn’t disappoint with her incredible sequel to The Fire Wish.In The Blind Wish, Lough transports us back to the land and lore she so adeptly brought to life with TFW. Remember, the jinni and humans are at war, we’re in medieval Baghdad, and wishes are both more powerful and dangerous than we’d ever imagined.Lough’s writing is so gorgeous that I often found myself rereading a phrase several times over just to savor the deliciousness of her words. Her poetic descriptions paired with her fantastical imagination make both the human caliphate and the jinn cavern come alive in a way that makes me ache to see it for myself. She demonstrated her original imagination with The Fire Wish, but here, she seizes the freedom of a sequel to weave even more mythology, mystery, and magic into the incredible world she’s built.I adore both Najwa and Zayele, the two girls who narrate the book. I loved spending equal time with both girls. Lough doesn’t shy away from the hard work of creating authentic and flawed characters and I love her all the more for it. These girls are smart and interesting and…have a lot to learn. It’s a treat to have a front-row seat while they grow.Since it still holds true, I thought I’d include a paragraph from my Fire Wish review: This book has war, love, betrayal, espionage, history, magic, and beauty. If you love historical fiction, you'll love it. If you love books about other cultures, you'll love it. If you love fantasy, you'll love it. If you love paranormal romance, you'll love it. If you love spy books, you'll love it. If you love action books, you'll love it. If you love poetry, you'll love it. Yeah. It's that good.Best of all, it’s just a click away! So, what are you waiting for?

4.5/5 stars! I really enjoyed the The Blind Wish right from the beginning. As with The Fire Wish, the worldbuilding was breathtaking. I especially loved the Breaking and the Haunted – they really were perfect. The ending could have been a touch stronger, but still, I highly recommend this series!

Norman Mailer was one of the best writers to come out of the Twentieth Century. He was also one of those writers in the Hemingway mold, who sought to immerse himself in the subject matter about which he wrote. No stranger to the sweet science (he once did a three-round boxing match on the Dick Cavet Show with ex-light-heavyweight champ, Jose Torres), Mailer was sent to cover the Rumble in the Jungle in Africa in 1974 when Muhammad Ali became the second man to regain the heavyweight title when he took it away from George Foreman. Mailer had a way with imagery and metaphor, and his writing is engaging. His colossal ego is also in evidence in this piece. He refers to himself in the third person throughout. Interestingly enough, there is more written about the events leading up to the big fight than of the actual contest itself. Despite Mailer's friendship and obvious idolization of Ali, the author does give us a few glances of Ali's cruel nature. Foreman, who later became the oldest man ever to regain the heavyweight title, is not described in much detail, and is cast as a bit player in this piece. Ironically, Foreman's genial personality wouldn't become evident until his comeback about ten years after his original reign as heavyweight champion. The Fight focuses primarily on Ali, who was a larger-than-life icon during the 1970's. It's too bad Mailer didn't try to gain more insight into Foreman's nature, but perhaps that wasn't an option at the time, since Norman was clearly a member of Ali's camp. Originally written as a two-part article for Playboy magazine, Mailer later expanded the article into this book. It's an interesting memoir and gives the reader a sense of being caught up in the big event.

I'm a big sports fan and love reading great literature of sport. I'd never read anything by Norman Mailer until this book. I was blown away both by the ferocity of the author's talents and his ability to capture this fight. There are various ebbs and flows of the book until the fight itself which is the most remarkable sports writing I've ever read. The Rumble in the Jungle has been called the greatest sporting event of the 20th century. This book puts the reader not at ringside, but really in the ring itself within Ali and within Foreman. I am so glad I read this book.

Mailer's New Journalism here serves up a real feast, a smorgasbord of topics such as masculinity, economic dictatorship, journalism, the African climate, the African 'nature' and American stewardesses - er, flight attendants - mixed into the slow-heating but ultimately succulent and rewarding narrative of the boxing match that simmers in the background. A very New Journo sentence that!Zaire, from 1971 and 1997 what is now the highly unstable DemocraticRepublic of the Congo, is the Portugese word for the Congo River, itself taken from the Congo word nzere (river that swallows all rivers). The river, nature and weather are ever present here - will it rain before the fight (the rains came after the fight and flooded the whole concrete stadium, dressing rooms, everything).Zaire was a military dictatorship under Joseph Desire Mobuto, who then "Africanized" his name (getting rid of Belgian colonial influence) to Mobuto Sese Suko Kuko Ngbendu Wa Za Banga, sort of "all conquering warrior who goes from triumph to triumph". This is all detailed by Mailer at the beginning of the book, although Wikipedia is also useful for those trying to remember and writing a book review on Amazon!Essentially as a showcase for and to consolidate his rule Mobuto set up this historic boxing match. Thus a lot of the early book is Mailer's perceptions of the bizarre dictatorship and its brief history and, like all dictatorships, cult of personality. We can then compare Mobuto the warrior to the other warriors in the story, Foreman and Ali.A major theme of the book is maculinity. There are almost no female characters in the book, apart from Ali's wife who briefly appears at the end and an American stew - er flight attendant - who is something of a heroine in the final act. Thus there is George, portrayed as the one dimensional knock out machine he probably was back then. There are the men in George's camp, who worry he might kill Ali. Then there are the men around Ali, his camp. Many doubt him. A fascinating figure is Bundini, whose role in the camp appears to be court jester, motivator and mystic provider. As another reviewer has mentioned one of the most satisfying chapters is when Mailer ("Norman" in the text) goes for a morning jog with Ali and is ultimately disappointed and worried by the seemingly lackadaisical aspect of Ali's training. The chapters chronicling the fight itself are just amazing writing that should be set as a text for any budding sports journalist. Mailer here is good, very very good. However for me the best New Journalism tome on masculinity is actually The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe, a book of genius.

Review

[T]here is much to be admired in this ambitious and unconventional approach. Githuku provides a richly detailed and passionately argued study that will be of interest to anyone who seeks to understand the making of the postcolonial state in Kenya and the continuing tensions and disaffections that lurk just beneath the surface of its modern political life. (The International Journal Of African Studies)[This book] offers prospective readers a richly detailed analysis of the ways in which unresolved historical problems and injustices stemming from colonialism continue to haunt contemporary Kenya. (African Affairs)Nicholas Githuku’s history confronts [Kenya’s] violence and its political effects head on. He asks new questions about Kenya’s history, quotes previously unexamined evidence, and offers his readers important new insights. In all this he challenges his fellow Kenyans to join him in resurrecting their local historiography. (John Lonsdale, Trinity College, Cambridge)To those who contend that the history of the colonial period is no longer of much consequence in recent developments and trends in Kenya and other parts of Africa, moreover, this book provides a detailed and powerful refutation. (Robert M. Maxon, West Virginia University)
