I can draw anything .... but this book is an excellent reference for inspiration and letting clients imagine different possibilities for banners then just the classics. I'm really glad I bought this book. ( and since most reference books are hundreds of dollars... this is a great deal!)

Great resource to add to my library. Tons of shapes and interpretations, extremely useful in hand drawn logo design.Not to sound off about this but...its a beautiful thing to see booked labeled as "useful & completely copyright free". Lots of designers these days seem to love the smoke & mirrors approach in trying to hide their inspiration and tools of the trade.Love this book. Will continue to purchase more in this realm over the coming months.Thanks!

As an artist, I'm called on from time to time to design banners. I saw this book in a tattoo shop and after leafing through it, I decided I had to have it. It's a fantastic book that covers a VERY wide range of banners. Very helpful.

Not much to say. The scrollwork in this book spans many styles and dates. It's very handy for quick reference if you're doing say, a tattoo design or t-shirt artwork. Many beautiful, unique and inspiring scrolls in here. A great buy for any artist!

If you need a scroll motif, there isn't a better variety to be found in any single source. Torn-paper scrolls, currency panels, neoclassical banners. The odd illustration that could be useful in its own right, a la the wonderful *Treasury of Book Ornament and Decoration* (ISBN 0486251675).

I bought these for use in the tattoo shop I work at. They're full of excellent ideas to get people away from tacky flash.

I felt very alone during my 2007 middle-aged deconversion, despite living in the most unchurched part of the country (Pacific Northwest). However, as time passed fellow faith-expats like Seth Andrews published their exodus stories and I began to feel like I was part of a burgeoning movement. Reading "Deconverted" was like a trip through memory lane, and I easily identified with the story of a man who, after decades in the Church, finally figured out it was a house of cards and abandoned a comfortably numb religious fantasy for the soothing balm of atheist rationality.Mr. Andrews and I are both Generation X and therefore experienced many of the same Christian rites of passage, such as being scared towards God by the apocalyptic "Thief in the Night" cheese-fest series of movies and rocking out in a holy way to righteous acts like Petra and the Imperials. He got saved at a much earlier age than I did due in no small part to the influence of his Christian parents, but our post-conversion result was the same: a passion for all things Jesus and a quest to become a "man of God" via the Scriptural use of spiritual gifts and natural talents.In the author's case, coming of age during the big boom of contemporary Christian music in the 80s and 90s led Mr. Andrews to his calling as a Christian radio deejay. At first life seemed divinely ordered, but as time went on he began to question his beliefs as he grieved over the senseless deaths of devout Christian musicians Keith Green and Rich Mullins, cringed at the excesses of evangelical luminaries such as Oral Roberts, and recoiled from the horrifying actions of religious fanatics during 9/11. Mr. Andrews' once fiery faith began to sputter and he settled into what a more zealous believer would call a "lukewarm" mindset.But as the saying goes: "when the student is ready, the master will appear." This fateful event happened for Mr. Andrews (and me as well) when the New Atheists began releasing their controversial and hard-hitting tomes. In particular, raconteur Christopher Hitchens made a strong impression on the author with his witty and articulate demolition of all things religious. The last of Mr. Andrews' Christianity fell before the onslaught of Mr. Hitchens and his rational comrades, and he was reborn with a new mission as founder of The Thinking Atheist and producer of podcasts and video resources for non-believers.Each chapter of "Deconverted" begins with an encouraging quote from a member of The Thinking Atheist Internet community. In addition to his personal tale, Mr. Andrews has gathered some of the gorier and more contradictory aspects of the Bible that are usually ignored or rationalized by believers (provided they actually read their holy book, which is less common than you might expect). His categorization of Christian apologetic archetypes was familiar and insightful as well (check out Bill Maher's fine documentary "Religulous" for real-life examples in the wild).After finishing the book I was inspired to hit the Web and investigate Mr. Andrews' organization and other atheist-related websites and Facebook groups. I have been fly fishing since 1957. Several years ago I tried Tenkara fishing and immediately broke two (2) rods landing foul-hooked red salmon. I learned my lesson. This second edition is more enjoyable and broader based.

Her characters are nuanced and all are interesting. She brings a bit of Lou's private life into the story; along with her missing sister, Lou also has a less-than-faithful husband.Howzell Hall's first book is told in the first person, with additional parts told from the third. It's a good story - the characters are fairly complex - but the plot suffers a bit from what I think is a first-timer's gambit in writing - the "damsel in distress". See, the murderer is also after Lou. All gets solved in the end, and Elouise Norton goes on to further books in the series. And I'm going along with her

This book was quite a pleasant surprise. There were only two reviews listed when I decided to give it a chance. And I am glad that I did.Our hero, Lou Norton, an LAPD homicide detective from the Southwest division, reminds me of Harry Bosch. And I am a huge Harry Bosch fan. Both have lots of baggage and the skill and determination to get the "bad guy". I love crime dramas that take place in the Los Angeles area so this really made for a great read for me.Lou not only wants to solve her current murder case but, somehow, tie it into her sister's murder from twenty-five years ago. Her "newbie" partner is not much help but is a quick learner and knows that Lou is a great detective and teacher. Together, they go about each step to uncover the murder plot.The book really takes you to a place in a social-economic group I am not all that familiar with. The author does it with style, honesty, and true grit. The plot line moved right along and it was not easy to put the book down. I just wanted to keep reading.The only part I could not figure out was when the author switched from first person narrative to third person and told the story of some older man that had an obsession for young women that would put up with his weird sexual fantasies. I never did get the connection of this with the rest of the book. The author tried to fit it in but I must admit I was confused at the end when all the murder cases were resolved.Other than that, I would recommend this book to any Harry Bosch fan or anyone else that loves a great murder mystery. I hope the author writes more stories about Lou Norton.

If the press is to be believed, there are two sides to LA: gritty and glamorous. This book definitely explores the gritty side. And does it with a fresh voice and a compelling protagonist.The dialog is snappy, the pacing is brisk and the twists are just right. Elouise "Lou" Norton is a strong, intelligent protagonist - but broken, and in more ways than one. I like the fact that she can acknowledge that and it's impact on her, without turning her whiny or needy. I also like how the book acknowledges the reality of being black and poor in LA, and a black woman at the LAPD, without turning into a lecture or diatribe. I will definitely pick up the next two in the series.Note: not for folks who don't like strong profanity or on-page violence in their mysteries.

She's a new and original character, and Rachel Howzell Hall introduces her in a very compelling story. Hall also creates a very convincing and intriguing setting in an area of south L.A. that's undergoing a black gentrification, and the end result is a book that will appeal to large numbers of crime fiction readers. I'm looking forward eagerly to Lou's next case.

Quite the beginning to this series and contains lots of twists and turns. Chaos sets the scenes and bedlam follows.Don't expect to put this one down until you get to the end. Not going to happen...believe me. Action abounds, excellent plot development as well as interesting characters. Mystery in the air as Tommy Joss searches for his wife and daughter and trying to figure out what in the world is going on in the US.The addition of a female character (Summer) allows another dimension to this story. She has different ideas than Tommy which conflict...at times.Looking forward to the next one in this series.Most highly recommended.

The beginning dragged a little for me and almost made me lose interest, but I loved Adair's Slow Burn series so I kept reading. Glad I did! At the heart of the story is a man's love for his family and the things he will do to save and protect them. The political themes in this story are presented in a manner that warns of a possibility in America's future without ever once alluding to that future being saved by a Republican or Democrat solution. Adair never once interjected a personal political ideology into the story. In fact, it's told so well that the main character could be the hero for whatever political ideology you lean towards and the warning would still be viable for all Americans regardless of that political persuasion. Another great story from Adair where the physical copy will find its way to my bookshelf.

It’s a good story. One possible, perhaps even likely scenario for America. The only story elements I disagreed with were the right wingers (or what I interpreted as right wing) being the “villains”. I think it’s far more likely left wing extremists will perpetrate violence and I also don’t think the right wing folks could ever cooperate to pull something like that off. I think they’re too independent and fragmented, their innate paranoia would never allow them to work together. The left is much better at that. The other was the “revolutionaries” being able to coordinate on a large scale secretly. I don’t think that’s possible today.One need only look back to the late 60s and early 70s to see what I’m referring to. It happened before. I think there were over 2500 b0mbings in 1971-72, that’s like 5 a day! Look up Sam Melville or Bill Ayers.I do think Mr. Adair is correct in thinking it’s coming, it will be horrific and foreign powers will seek advantage of our weakness.

This was a quick & decent $0.99 read. I won't be continuing the series, though. Unlike other readers, I had no difficulty discerning the political ideology of the protagonists/antagonists. The symbolism is clear. That's fine; most of the fiction in this genre is slanted the other way. It doesn't hurt to treat it from the other side for a change. But I have no desire to follow these characters. A minor niggle is the protagonist's threat to empty the magazine of a Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum into an adversary; I am not aware of any Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum handgun that is not a revolver, and which therefore has a cylinder, but no magazine. There ARE other more modern semi-auto (magazine-fed) pistols on the market that utilize this cartridge, but none are manufactured by Smith & Wesson. It's a minor mistake, but a lazy one for an author writing a novel in which weapons are so central to the theme, and which indeed figure into almost every scene.

I love Bobby Adair's writing! He's a top-notch author and he doesn't disappoint with this action-packed book. If you ever thought. "There's no way America could fall," this book shows exactly how this could happen. That's what makes it scary. The characters are interesting and the premise is intriguing. Some of the characters feel slightly cliched but to me this added to the tension of the events in the book because you have familiar archetypes juxtaposed against horrible events that seem like they could actually happen in real life...in the not so distant future. There isn't a lot of graphic violence. Instead, this book is scary because you can actually envision this happening in America. That's what I like about Bobby Adair's writing...he makes you feel connected to the characters, like they're real people experiencing real events. You feel like you're in the action, and that's pretty scary when the action your in is how your country descends into sudden, violent civil war. I recommend reading this book!

That thought you've had. You know the one you banish from your mind before you even acknowledge it is there. Bobby takes that thought and turns it in his very capable hands examining it from all angles, and scares you to death. This guy is as good as early Stephen King and I'm sure you will enjoy him as much as I do.

Now Zombies I yawn at, blood thirsty aliens I look with quiet eyes, deadly viruses I laugh at. Most books I enjoy but very very few ever scares me. This one scares me. It is so realistic, so in touch with politics today. I am afraid this might really come true. It bother me so much I almost put it down. But I really enjoy Bobby Adair's writings. Well worth reading, I recommend it. But you may never watch the news again.

I've read all of the Slow Burn series and thoroughly enjoyed them all. This book is a complete departure from those books. This is a book that has an all too big of a possibility to happen in the near future. What happens when our political decisiveness devolves into violence? When people in power to unchecked.A man is searching for his family while trying to figure what is happening and why. Extreme violence. Well written and gives you a lot think about and where our country and the world is heading.

We just got back from a 10 day road trip through New England, and thus guidebook was only marginally useful. The pictures are great, and it has a good map of New England to get a sense of the whole area. The proposed road trip routes gave us some good ideas to piece together our trip, but the recommended restaurants and hotels along the way were hit or miss. I don’t know how they culled the info to include, but we found that a particular city would be included but the book would have so little info on the place that we needed another book or internet searches to really figure out what to do or where to go.

This was our overall planning book and go to book for descriptions of places of interest for our recent 2 week road trip to Vermont and New Hampshire. It was the right level of description - did not get overwhelming. That supplemented by the internet for specifics was all we used. It was easy to use for planning with simple maps and trip highlights clearly described.

I found this book to be very informative. Each state in the New England area is covered in detail. I was interested in a Vermont trip this summer. The section covering Vermont listed several trips for varied interests. Each trip listed specialties of each town and particular highlights of interests. The guide also listed both eating places and lodgings. The guide also noted points of interest during the summer season, in addition to covering the great fall and winter attractions.

Planning our first road trip to New England and wondering where to go and what to see. OMG, this book surpassed my expectations! They help you plan your trip by asking your interests, than state by state offering several different road trips to go on telling you the points of interest you can see. Makes it super easy.

This book is perfectly organized and all of the information is easily accessible. We bought this for my in laws to inspire them to get out of the house more now that they are both retired and they absolutely love it. We will be purchasing another copy for ourselves. If you live in New England and are looking for a nice little book to keep in the car this is the one, you won't be disappointed.

Last year I purchased the Lonely Planet Pacific Northwest's Best Trips (Travel Guide) in order to plan a road trip from Seattle to Vancouver and then south to San Francisco. I really liked the layout of the book with the suggested itineraries, so I decided to purchase this book this year for a Northeast road trip. While the resources you will find online are incredible, the organization of this book is perfect for those of you that still like to hold a travel guide in your hands and trace out the maps in travel books.

Gave this to my granddaughter and her boyfriend. Get out of the house and go see the world around you. Book does a nice job.

Great resource for introducing fossil fuels

This is a very well written and engaging resource for elementary students and teachers.

Delightful and educational series for adults for young citizen scientists. Please check out Penny and Molly's other titles as well!

I'm a huge fan of this series, and this book in particular.Instead of reviewing the entire book, I'm going to talk about one page, because I think it exemplifies what makes the entire Sunlight series so groundbreaking.There's a two page spread that shows atmospheric CO2 concentrations over the last 400,000 years. Under the line graph are the little CO2 molecules that will be so familiar to any reader of the Sunlight books. What's significant though is that under the parts of the graph where CO2 concentrations were relatively low, there's correspondingly less CO2 molecules than under the regions of high concentration, and the higher the concentration the more densely the CO2 molecules are packed. In addition, there's a little landscape scene running along the bottom of the page. The landscape displays known ice ages and inter-glacial periods so you can really clearly see how ice ages correspond to period of low CO2 concentration.This is amazing in a few ways. The density of the CO2 molecules, subtly supports the information in the graph, while the illustrations of the climate at the time make it easy to connect ice ages to atmospheric CO2 levels. This data visualization helps teach non-technical readers - especially children - to interpret data.This kind of attention to detail, depth and clarity and thoughtfulness is on literally every page of this book. It's a frankly astounding work that can be understood on one level by young children while still offering insights to older kids and adults.

I've read or been read Molly Bang's books since before I could walk. Coming to this book as an adult has been incredible. I have given it as gifts to many children, read it to many kids, and have read it myself. I find it a wonderful way for children to begin to learn about the complexities of our world and our human impact upon it. The (as always) gorgeous illustrations just help and make it an even more exciting adventure in reading!Highly recommend to children of any age! And adults...
