I have several books from this publisher and this is one of the best. Due to the loss of so many homes and businesses from the purposed Tocks Island Dam project, this book is an excellent record of what once was in the Pocono area along the Delaware on the PA side. The photo captions provide the text in this series and they are both informative and well written.

This book is exactly what I'd hoped it would be. Lots of information and photos of the Poconos/ Delaware Water Gap area. We wanted to know something about the history of this area, we just purchased a home here.

Very important to be aware of trends in photography and art. This book is a treasure chest of old and new ideas. For those artists who want to create new art and not just repeat the history of art, this book is invaluable.

Had to get this for a class but it's really good if you want to read it to learn more about photographers and their work. I personally learn different ways of contemporary art in photographs and opened my mind to more ways in creating it.

This book has an interesting organization, with the chapters classifying artists according to their artistic vision or motivation. Unfortunately, the text does not do justice to this analytical approach with the description of photographs and photographers being mostly superficial. There isn't much of an attempt to link contemporary photography with its social and cultural environment.However, what makes the book a real bargain are the photographs. You get to browse through the work of many of the important photographers of the last few decades in one place and to contrast them with one another. The small size of the reproductions is somewhat disappointing, but it is made up by the large number of photographs and the low price of the book. The printing and paper quality are good.

Photography isn't the most exciting thing to me in the world, but this book made me interested in learning more about it. Lots of photos are in the book with short descriptions of many of the photographers and what their type they focus mostly on.

Great read- Gives You direction as to the different genres Of photography. Talks about different Famous photographers and their styles of shooting.

Obviously written with a Third-World audience in mind, TBA nevertheless has a multitude of useful ideas that could be incorporated into North American buildings. At first glance this handbook's 697 pages are intimidating, but fear not - this tome is extremely user-friendly, as it employs only simple drawings and brief text to convey a wealth of handy ideas for laymen/owner builders and professional contractors alike. The only exception to that last statement is that TBA has a rather skimpy index.TBA starts off with a thoughtful design overview which shows how to situate your house, say, to take advantage of the prevailing winds, solar orientation, terrain, and vegetation on your building site. Subsequent chapters cover considerations and methods for building in deserts, jungles, and temperate zones. Granted, not many Norte Americanos will want to build their homes with bamboo, thatch or handmade adobe bricks, but there are plenty of examples of materials and construction techniques that I wouldn't hesitate to use where I live in Northwest Wyoming.The use of modern insulating, siding, and roofing materials that would be familiar and available to Americans is little discussed. Remember that the primary audience for this handbook resides not in North America/First World, but in the southern hemisphere, where most citizens don't have our economic wherewithal. I would not use a lot of TBA's suggestions in the building of my primary residence, but for outbuildings, walls, gardens, get-away cabins, etc., I would use this book in a heartbeat for my construction bible. Thoreau would have loved it. Perhaps in a post-peak oil world, TBA will become a must-have resource for those of us who have to live more simply and take advantage of the building materials close at hand. Most discussions in TBA readily stimulate one to think of practical uses for the natural resources that surround us all.

After my wife and I had finished writing The Straw Bale House and were beginning work in Mexico on a number of projects, we came across this book during our travels. We loved it so much we set out trying to find out where we could get more copies. The search took us to a bookstore in Mexico City where we bought several cases to bring back to the States. They were so popular with friends that we gave away/sold all of them in almost no time at all. It's just a marvelous little book with simple but very clear illustrations. Quite truthfully I'm totally amazed that Lloyd Khan the publisher came across this book and decided to print it in English. But then again, that's what makes Lloyd the entertaining publisher that he is.

This is a very interesting book.It appears to have been written for Peace Corps volunteers or their ilk.It is profusely illustrated with line drawings that complement and clarify the content.It overs all aspects of home building for those in developing areas (OK that was the PC version, it really is for people with nothing, that are dirt poor, that have to make do w/what's close at hand, i.e., those in poverty.)That being said I found it to be very educational because if tables were reversed, I wouldn't have a clue and this book might get me started out right.

This "how to" approach addresses the 2nd and 3rd world's building practices from the direct perspective of someone who understands building in the tropics. A vital and useful book for any interested student of the best practices for 1000 aspects of the diy community building in impoverished areas of the world. Completely practical and honest, and vitally up-to-date for building anywhere but the hideously code-infested wealthy Western world. Truly a gem.

If you plan on ever building in the third world (or off the grid in the developed world) this book is filled with tips and techniques that are used by traditional builders the world over. There is a section on everything from jungle construction to all the various forms of waste management in the world.

Great book. Simple but has lots of design principles to help the “diy” type design their off grid home.

This is a fabulous book. It is filled with a real sense of hope and empowerment about one's place in the world. And with clear diagrams and drawings for constructing energy-efficient, locally sustainable habitation. My only complaint (talk about 1st world problems...) is that it's written for a Southern Hemisphere audience, so directives about solar gain can become confusing, e.g. the north wall in this book is the south wall to me.

I recommend this to engineering students getting involved in development and construction in majority world settings. More than just how to: WHY TO. Great illustrations, almost could use overseas without any translation, the diagrams are that clear.

Tango: A History of an Obsession reads like a poorly written middle-school student's report. Instead of actual research and facts, it relies on information accumulated from informal surveys of dancers (famous and not) which the author quotes throughout the book for no reason other than to fill a lot of space. The spelling, grammar and punctuation is deplorable. Facts are cloudy at best. (She even got the name of Robert Duvall's tango movie wrong.) I will be honest, I could only get through the first 100 pages before saying enough is enough. Could not stomach to read another 300.

Having read all, and I mean ALL, the tango books written (I have been a professional tango dancer and teacher for the past 14 years) I was truely amazed when I read Virginia Gift's book....it was a new and refreshing look at the history of Tango from the perspective of the obsession people have with this dance and the history of that obsession. As historian from many years and a tango dancer herself, Virginia was able to capture this history in a way that a non-tango dancer could not.I love this book so much that I purchased a supply of 200 so far and give one to each of the students that enroll in my beginner boot camp. They love getting such a beautiful gift and have told me how much they have enjoyed reading this book.I hope everyone that dances tango takes the time to read this book. Even after reading all the other books out there I learned quite a few new things about this dance that I am so passionate about and truly "obsessed" by!

This book covers three aspects of the current obsession with tango. Part One is an analysis of the phenomenal rennaisance of worldwide interest in the dance. It tells who is dancing, why they are dancing, where, when, and how--including a description of classical and new styles. The history section Part Two: explains the social economic and political reasons for the rise, fall, and the contemporary revival of the tango. The third section is a guide to today's Buenos Aires, where tango had its birth, to today's fascinating city (of the Portenos) that remains the Mecca for tango. Whether on a pilgrimage to tango's origins or as a tourist, the city is fascinating. This book has it all. A truly remarkable account of the phenomena: Tango.

Certainly would like to refer to anybody who is interested in Argentine Tango, whether a "seasoned" or "upstart" tangero or tangera.

I loved Virginia Gift's book because it filled in all the information I had never known about Tango since first hearing Gardel and watching Valentino movies with my mother back in the 40. Well written, well researched and yes will definetely satisfy one's tango obsession whether for those who love the dance, the music, or the great poetry and passion of the tango lyrics!Bill Snell

This book is well suited for novices and experienced tangueros/tangueras who are looking for somehting other than the recent spate of tango memoirs, some of which I read and thoroughly enjoyed. Tango: A History Of Obsession is for those who are looking for an assiduously researched historical account of from whence this most unique and ever evolving social dance has come and, thanks to the book's inclusion of an essay by Tango's foremost innovator, Gustavo Naveira, where the world-wide pandemic of tango fever may be headed.

I was strongly disappointed in this work. From the promising title I expected a well-researched, well-written, chronicle of the history and development of tango. What I found instead was a very breezy assemblage of responses from a questionnaire that the author submitted to a number of prominent figures in the tango world and a "history" that seemed yet another rehashing of common (and mostly discredited) tango myths and folklore. Aside from the content, or lack of, the work struck me as poorly-written and in need of editing.Typographical errors were frequent. The book is, by the way, self-published.

This highly informative and rich description of tango history and culture was a great read. The author clearly has a lot of experiential as well as historical knowledge of the topic. Anyone interested in dance and Argentina should read this book!

The insight I got from this book was amazing. The author must have been a fly on the wall of my childhood. While my mother is a covert, vulnerable narcissist, and that type is not covered at all in this book, there were still plenty of sections that pertained to her behavior and how that damaged my sister and I. The chapters explaining that daughters of narcissists will go in either one of two directions blew me away as that's exactly what my sister and I did. I have answers now to questions I've had for decades, all because of this book.

Holy crap! I am 31 years old, and only now have I come to terms with the limitations of my mother during my childhood, brought to light by this book. I went into therapy last year after realizing I was seriously underachieving, yet remained passive like a leaf in the wind( this was due to the fact that I was always on other people's agendas and unable to act individually.) I realized I was codependent, stemming from being a peacemaker/emotional caretaker at a very young age... and that my "value" to my mom was and is 100% based on actions. She would verbatim say phrases for years such as "I wish you were never born" to "you are a burden" pointblank over and over and over. I was naturally a smart kid and excelled easily in school, but very early on I learned how to shrink myself. In my mid-20s, after having much less contact with my mom (she does not initiate contact 99% of the time) yet still not dealing with any issues I nearly lost my voice. It was so strange and I just knew it was psychosomatic. It has strengthened since the codependent work and after I've read this book and understand where this whole thing developed from I know it will be strong. I would read the codependent books that talk about valuing oneself intrinsically rather than on what one does... I literally could not get this concept into my brain at all. There was a massive block, and only now do I realize WHY: I have been trained since birth to believe this, and actually live and experience an exclusively conditional environment. If you withhold love from a child you may as well withhold air.Please read this book if you even suspect you have a diminishing, overly self-centered mother. It is such a taboo in our society. It is a very hard concept to accept, which Dr. McBride reiterates over and over. We have been trained to be "good girls" and we all want that ideal family in our heads. Outwardly, my parents are still married, their three daughters grew up and flew the coup and they got a dog. Behind the curtain is a nightmare. Now when people ask me if I'm close to my mom I say "nope". I'm done carrying on the torch of pain, delusion and BS. This doesn't mean I will stop talking to her or retaliate in any way, it just brings me out of a deluded, painful and ineffective way of living my life, which is not at all the real me. I wish the best for both of us.

For so long I never understood why I felt like I wasn't good enough. Barely minutes after picking up this book after yet another Thanksgiving/Christmas ruined by my mother, I do. I skimmed it in B&N and I'm reading it again in detail and it's changing my life. At 30 I'm finally able to figure out why I feel like I'm underserving of anything whether it being a relationship or career success despite being a consistent over achiever for my entire life. I felt guilty for even thinking my mother is a maternal narcissist because she's done so much for me. But now I know that she's an engulfing maternal narcissist.I like that punishing narcissistic mothers isn't a theme in this book. If readers don't want to, or don't feel that they can have a relationship with their mother then that's their prerogative but that isn't the objective. It's to identify, come to terms with things and heal so you can live a better life and break the cycle.

This passed February at 91, my loving but now I've discovered highly narsacistic mother past away. At 54, and her only child, I was the only target she had. Though I'm only halfway through, I've already gained so much knowledge into why she was the way she was. One great thing as well, though it doesn't label any as such, I've learned valuable lessons in parenting my own, now grown children.

This book is great. As a mental health professional I would also recommend this book to those who are dealing with CPTSD as a result of having a narcissistic mother. Before I bought the book, I was concerned because of some of the negative reviews. However, this book is very comprehensive and feel that maybe those who gave the book a negative review may have not wanted to do the hard work.I knew the book was right for me when I read the beginning. The book is to help you on your healing journey, not bash your family of origin. The book comes from a place of compassion. The book covers empirical evidence of the results of narcissistic mothers on their daughters. It gives a variety of clinical examples, as well as ways that you can see where your mother is on the narcism spectrum. It does into detail about some of the symptoms, feelings, and thoughts you may be experiencing as a result of childhood stresses/trauma.The final part of the book is a guide for your healing journey. The work is incredibly difficult, but also incredibly rewarding! The only thing I wish McBride added was self-soothing techniques. I love the way she discusses taking alone time to think, journal, and process past experiences, but it does not provide any ways for calming down anxiety. I think many who read this might have PTSD, and there was not much information in this book about how those with trauma should approach exercises.If you don't have any self-soothing techniques, you might want to develop one for working through this book--such as meditation and mindfulness. The writing exercises and steps she gives you are what a good therapist would recommend to process a stressful childhood. Like I said previous, it is NOT easy work, but it is REWARDING work. Very worth while. I have already bought this book for others.

Since I turned two years old at the time the atomic bomb was dropped on Japan I thought it would be interesting to read about what was taking place in the world at the time of my birth and in the years immediately following. Harry Truman came into the presidency with an extremely humble attitude and his wife dreaded the thought of this taking place. So much happened during the following four years and President Truman was up to the challenge and the American public viewed him as one just like they were. It was his wife Bess who first used the term "accidental president" stating he could no longer be thought this way because he was later elected on his own merit. Pilot Paul Tibbets used the name Enola Gay after his mother for the plane that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. Such tidbits of information and others are found throughout the book. This book isn't a full length biography of President Truman's life. After a general introduction to Truman's early life the main part of the book is limited to his first four years in office.What I especially liked about the book is that it held my interest because I found it to be very readable for someone with a general interest in history. You need not be a scholar by any means to enjoy this book.

This is my third book I have read by this author and one thing its for sure, is he knows how to make his subject matter come alive. His previous books on Willow Run and the La Mans battle between Ferrari and Ford were just tremendous. This book is outstanding.Taking what Baime claims is four of perhaps the four most consequential months of any presidency, a point of which is probably correct, this book starts off with FDR's surprising death in Warm Springs, Georgia as World War II reaches its penultimate moments with the collapse of Germany and the beginning of the end of the Empire of Japan. Though the book claims only 4 months, you still get a portrait of Truman the man, his beginnings and his rise to the presidency.A humble man put in extraordinary circumstances, Truman somehow navigated the tough course. While not college educated, Truman was still shown to be a man of history and of music. Though I have read the mammoth McCullough biography, this book is just as outstanding. These four months were pretty momentous, and yet Truman had to navigate the end of the war, the Chinese civil war, and the domestic economy as well (though not the subject of this book). Amazing sense of the man and his predilections.This book is so effortless to read and a pleasure. Highly recommended,

We have all read good books and great books from a historical perspective. This book is one, if you please, that is an absolute must read. The story of HST and the burdens he had to bear after the death of FDR (and having served only 82 days as VP) are profound.As the book indicates, his first four months after taking the oath of office were four months that changed the world. No other president in history faced the critical challenges that Truman faced (much less the constant comparisons to FDR). Fighting many things such as "who the hell is Harry Truman?" was just one of the hurdles. Crisis after crisis and Harry got it done.Applause to the author, A.J. Baime for telling this gripping narrative of HST when the world was still in flames.

I enjoyed this book very much. The author writes well and keeps you turning the pages.I suspect that we will never see the likes of a Harry Truman in American presidential politics. While I did read McCollough's complete biography years ago, it was refreshing to revisit one of my favorite presidents. I was born while he was in office.All the more unusual was that Truman was never a success. He had a farm that failed, as well as a business that went under and never had the money to buy a house. After the White House, they lived in his mother-in -laws house in Independence. Add to this that his wife's mother did not like him and thought he would never amount to much.He worked hard and was humble, but he was tough on the Russians and they could not believe that FDR was gone and this Missouri rooster was crowing loudly against their ambitions in Europe. He was the kind of man you did not want to trifle with and I respect that about him.He made the decision to use atomic weapons on the Japanese in order to quickly conclude the war and likely save a quarter of a million of young soldiers that would have to invade Japan and fight an ugly battle.He took all these responsibilities on himself, working a grueling schedule and trying to read everything he could to prepare himself for the heavy work of international diplomacy. He pulled it off and we will never see the likes of this again.It struck that the author made the statement toward the end of the book that America peaked with the surrender of the Japanese and will never see those lofty heights again. I have to agree with him. America has seen her best days. All the rest is polite conversation.I highly recommend this book.
