I had read "The Ultimate Question" in 2006 and read this updated edition to see how Fred Reichheld updated the approach in a business environment that has become more social. In addition, I've been tracking his website and conference announcements over the past 6 months and have a friend who has made presentations about how his company has implemented the Net Promoter program. It seems this approach is gathering momentum, and why not -- it's much more practical than taking mind-numbing surveys about every aspect of the company's business model and customer experience.The focus on only one key question with follow-up is something every employee can conceptually understand and relate to each customer with whom s/he interacts. So the straightfowardness and elegance of the approach solves a major problem many organizations have with implementing such programs. As another reviewer commented, it seems a little bit of overkill to have a whole book to explain that.The bigger issue in my opinion is whether the organization's culture will empower employees to do something to improve a customer experience on the spot to rescue a 0-6 detractor to make that interaction successful. And bigger picture, are the employees able to recognize how current practices could be improved so as to make improvements in best practices and customer experiences that would elevate more customer responses to '9's' and 10's' across the whole organization? To me, this is the bigger challenge and one the book doesn't get into as much. Perhaps that's to be expected because each culture is different and there may not be one best way for that to be done.My friend's company was a great candidate for implementing Net Promoter because much had been done to put their employees into positions where they were empowered to delight the customer, to suggest best practice improvements to their supervisors, and to lobby for their acceptance. Once they've been enabled to do those things, then Net Promoter would be easily implemented.

I recently completed reading The Ultimate Question 2.0[i] by Fred Reichheld. This is the second version of his book explaining and extolling the virtues of the Net Promoter Score or NPS. I was already quite familiar with the NPS methodology having pioneered its use in IT outsourcing. However, I found that the book still had much to commend it.I took a number of key lessons from the book:First, and foremost, the real power of NPS is as part of long-term strategy that places the customer at the heart of business. Reichheld contrasts "good profits" - earned from delighted repeat customers who promote the product to others - with "bad profits" where customers are "misled, mistreated, ignored or coerced". If, other factors cause companies to pursue "bad profits", NPS results will inevitably be poor and cosmetic improvement programs will achieve little.A good NPS score (absolutely or relative to competitors) is NOT an end in itself. The end is sustained competitive advantage and profitable growth.The NPS question and zero-to-ten scale is a straightforward, highly effective approach. It is easy to calculate, understand and compare with others. It does not need to be tailored.Contextual factors are critical to success. These include:Executive commitment and sponsorship. All of the successful case studies featured a direct personal involvement from the CEO;Pervasiveness of NPS-focus. NPS results must gain equal currency and importance within an organization as other management information including financial targets and performance;A closed loop feedback system. The process must embrace timely follow up to the survey respondents from those who have the ability to act upon their comments.Employee Net Promoter Scores (eNPS) have a strong correlation with customer results as engaged employees play a vital role in building customer loyalty.The lessons learned from the many companies cited in the book (e.g. Charles Schwab, Intuit, Phillips, Allianz, Virgin Media) parallel my own experience in implementing the methodology. Despite (or perhaps because of) its simplicity we encountered serious resistance to its introduction. Those responsible for existing customer satisfaction surveys doubted the validity of the NPS methodology, wanted to customize the question, and include it in a much large survey. In the book Reichheld quotes a dictum from Upton Sinclair "it is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon not doing so". My version would "it is difficult to get a man to explain things simply, when his profession requires them to be complicated". We also encountered sample bias, with the exclusion of probable detractors. Ironically, one major customer opted out of the survey completely as our use of their feedback would provide an unfair advantage over other suppliers. A preserve rationale if ever there was. As with the examples of the book, patient persistence was necessary to implement a global approach.The one area where the methodology remains incomplete is in the "cost benefit analysis" of implementation of the methodology and improvement of the score. Whilst intuitively, a higher NPS would suggest better financial results "remarkably few firms can confidently quantify the value if improving loyalty (more promoters, fewer detractors) for specific customers or segments". The book provides examples of microeconomic analyses for the impact of NPS on business-to-consumer (b2c) companies. However, the business-to-business (b2b) market is more complex. Here the average NPS for all consumers of the service should, in theory, suggest the overall "loyalty" of the customer organization. However, in practice, many other factors - such as governance, contract duration, and switching costs - come into the equation.So, back to the ultimate question" about "The Ultimate Question 2.0". My answer is 10. I do recommend it and furthermore recommend that you go on to implement the methodology. As Reichheld evangelizes, "The knowledge you can gain from implementing the Net Promoter System is in fact priceless. It will help you run a better business, do more satisfying work, and build relationships that yield a more fulfilling life". Now who would not recommend that?

Rating a book about people rating things. It's like Amazon Inception. Its not the most thrilling read, and it looks at NPS through rose colored glasses. This second version should really do something to address criticism of NPS, instead of just saying critics are wrong. But I think it's part of a plan to get you to hire Bain for your company.But it's also been really helpful for me. I took a job in my company where we are implementing the system and this has helped fill in the gaps with terminology and certain plans we are looking to act on. So if your company or organization is an NPS org, or moving towards it, a recommended read for sure.

I have been in the field of marketing and market research for more than 8 years. As one of the people involved in managing Brand Trackers, Customer Sat and NPS at the companies I work in, I have always been intrigued by this concept. I have to say, this book is an absolute winner. Loads of amazing examples, description of NPS in practice and adequate explanation of concepts makes it a perfect reading. Moreover, it makes you think about other things you can do around NPS. The book talks about all things that can be impacted by NPS and things that can impact NPS. Makes your mind move. One downside - some things do get repetitive in the book. You think - did I just read this earlier? The book can be cut down by 5% I think. But overall, I love the book and recommend to anyone who is in marketing, research, customer experience teams OR in general to anyone who is interested in learning about how to create a customer focused company and measure such success. So many books waste your time and money. Worth every penny and a keeper for the rest of my professional career. I am a promoter for this book - 10 on 10. I also will wait for the 3.0 version - which will of course bring the next set of learnings on this amazing topic. Or - will simply try and join the NPS Loyalty Forum. :)

The unadulterated stuff straight from your camera usually looks best. In fact, if your footage needs any help at all, it’s probably in the cameraman department. Don’t take this personally. Handheld shots, the most common kind of home video, are notoriously unstable, and that’s an instant giveaway that you’re an amateur. You can have the hands of a surgeon and still end up with shaky footage. This is true even with all the newfangled image stabilization technology that comes in the latest cameras. Don’t give up (and don’t resort to carrying a tripod everywhere). iMovie ’09 can stabilize your video after the fact, using one of its most amazing new features. Video Stabilization iMovie has powers that leave other “beginner” video-editing programs panting with envy. It’s filled with tools that have historically been found only in professional editing programs. iMovie’s stabilization feature, for example, is inherited from Apple’s $1,000 Final Cut Pro software. It works by analyzing every single frame in a clip, recognizing the changes in both camera position (movement up, down, left, or right) and camera rotation. Once it figures that bit out, it knows how to slide and rotate your clips to iron out the shakes. Unfortunately, this sort of analysis takes a very long time—roughly ten minutes for every minute of video (more or less depending on your Mac’s speed). The results, however, are worth it. The stabilization feature works absolute magic on most jerky, bumpy handheld footage. It works so well, in fact, that it can look positively creepy, as though you were floating along on a magic carpet. Fortunately, there’s a slider that lets you control how much stabilizing goes on. Four Ways to Trigger Stabilization Analysis Before iMovie can stabilize your video, it has to perform the above-mentioned analysis, which takes a long time. Fortunately, you have a lot of control over when the program does this processing: 1) Stabilize during import. You’re offered the opportunity to perform the analysis when you bring the footage into your Mac, as described in Chapter 1. 2) Stabilize selected clips. You can analyze certain clips at any time. Select one, or a group of them, and then choose File-->Analyze for Stabilization. 3) Stabilize an entire Event. In the list, click an Event’s name and then choose File-->Analyze for Stabilization. This option is great if the Event in question is someone jumping on a trampoline during an earthquake. 4) Stabilize a clip in the Event Browser. Double-click the clip to open the Inspector panel. Click Analyze Entire Clip as shown in Figure 7-1. 5) Stabilize a clip that’s already in the storyboard. Point to the clip, and then from the gear-icon menu, choose Clip Adjustments. On the panel that appears, turn on “Smooth clip motion.” This is a great trick when you’re looking over a project in progress and discover that one particular jerky shot is ruining the flow. It can also save you a lot of time, because iMovie stabilizes only the 20 seconds of a clip that you’ve actually used—plus an additional second on either side—rather than processing the 15-minute original (see Figure 7-2). If you later decide to lengthen the clip you stabilized (by more than a second), you’ll need to do more analyzing. The once-checked checkbox in the Inspector will require rechecking. Fortunately, iMovie analyzes only the new part you added that wasn’t already analyzed. Then go knit a sweater while you wait for your Mac to analyze your footage. Be prepared for a wait when you decide to analyze a clip. Depending on the speed of your computer, it can take between five and twelve minutes (or longer for older Macs) for every minute of footage stabilized. If you have a lot to analyze, let the Mac do its job overnight while you get some beauty sleep. A stabilized clip in your project displays a checkmark in the Stabilization box, plus the Maximum Zoom slider. Turn Stabilization on and off all you like; iMovie never has to analyze a clip but once.

"Grateful" is the only word I can think of when I read books like this. I can appreciate one reviewer's comment when they said they were "late for the Video party." I'm so late for the party, I thought everyone would have gone home, the food put away and the lights out. I'm 80 years old and setting forth on an exhileratingly new adventure. Although I've danced (and taught dancing) for over 60 years, it has become obvious that it's almost impossible to pursue my passion without a certain amount of digital and electronic knowledge. I had absolutely none. Not only is this gorgeous Macbook becoming my best friend, this wonderful "iMovie 09" book has transported our dance classes into magical musical productions.I am so grateful to David Pogue that it brings tears to my eyes. I've spent the last 4 months studying this book. That may sound like an extremely long time to many of you but I'd challenge you to learn dancing in 4 months. :) I started without a clue of how to make a movie, let alone even run a digital camera. My first DVD was absolutely terrific. We started with our Rumba class and then went on to Colombianas. My students are so thrilled, we have started our own little fun video production company.I'm not Pollyanna saying everything always went "zippity do dah" well. When I made boo boo's it was not the book's fault. Not at all. It was always my lack of basic knowledge. I would like to interject here, that I began my computer knowledge (I use that word lightly) with Pogue's Mac OS X Leopard. But that would be another review.So all you people who are able to buzz through this book because you already have a background of basic computer and digital, I applaud you and want to remind you how lucky you are to have found this path so much earlier than I have. But Whoopee, I did find it and I found this book as my daily guide. My next challenge is learning to send to YouTube and and Mobileme. Thank you David Pogue. Manzanita

This is an excellent readable book. Pogue does his usual great job of combining the necessary everyday material and the offbeat with clarity and humor. Since the chapters are pretty much independent it allowed me to check out the chapters on subjects like Safari and Mail that had many changes and that I use a lot. He almost always comes up with some neat trick I'm not aware of that saves time or allows operations I was not aware of.

"The Missing Manual" is a perfect title, as this publication doesn't cover the most basic of problems that 90-100% of iMovie users will encounter. - There is no procedure, technique, setting or Inspector correction that will reduce/eliminate the "fuzzy" end product. Rather than point out to customers that iMovie is a computer-generated software, with it's own capability limitations, (different from a camera, which has it's own limitations), this manual covers all the functions of the various buttons and switches, but neglects to say: "So, after you spend countless hours saving your labor-intensive, edited images/tracks to iMovie or desktop, you will end up with a "fuzzy" end product that you will be embarrassed to show to anyone.

Not sure this helped much. I think the whole imac system is better now as far as intuitive goes......i hope so.

Great job on this new Missing Manual. It's a huge help for anyone moving from iMovie 6 to iMovie 9 with it's very new, much more mainstream approach to video editing. As usual with the Missing Manual series, this book saved me hours of trial and error learning and let me start editing footage right away.

This is an excellent resource to learn iMovie 09. I have gone through it a couple of times and found so many tricks for making great home movies. I was blown away by what iMovie 09 can do. Perhaps my expectations were too low, but for much less than $100 (for iLife 09) you are able to make some really nice home movies and distribute them in many different ways. This book has a nice flow and introduces various movie and iMovie concepts easily and comfortably. I suggest it.

Mainly because I ended up with a non-Mac PC.

This book was fantastic! It explained Passover very well to my 8 year old niece in a way that was engaging, fun, and bright. My partner is Jewish and I am not however, we do honor particular holidays and find it important not to lose his heritage. Last Christmas she was asking many questions about why we were 'lighting all those candles' and her Uncle explained to her the story of Hanukah. While they were visiting this past Easter, we did a mini sedar and gave her this book so she would better understand what was going on. She loved it!The author does a great job putting a lot of information out there in a way that is understandable and acceptable to an 8 year old. I'll be honest in saying, that even at 35 I learned a thing or two that I didn't know. The illustrations are great. Nice colors and layout make this a fantastic book.This is a great introduction for children that want to know why something is the way it is or why some people do things a certain way.

Sarah was excited because Passover was coming up. She was helping pick up her toys as her Mom was cheerfully dusting a mirror. While they worked she learned about why the Jewish people, who were once called Israelites, celebrated the holiday. Long ago in ancient Egypt they had been slaves. They struggled to do things like move stones for their slave drivers. Her Mom told her that during Passover it was a time to remember that the Jews had once been slaves and it was a time to "celebrate our freedom." Moses had gone as a messenger of God to the Egyptian king to ask that he set the Israelites free, but he refused. As a result, "God sent many troubles to Egypt" until he relented and set them free.The house had to be cleaned from top to bottom and then Sarah had "to clean out the regular bread and cookies." After that she'd even "brush a feather across the shelves" so she wouldn't "miss even one crumb." She learned all about the reason that the Israelites had to eat matzah, a bread that they ate during Passover. There were a lot of things for Sarah to do to prepare for Passover. She shopped at the store for "special Passover foods," helped her Mom prepare the seder plate, and was ready for her part in the Haggadah. Grandfather broke "the middle matzah" and carefully hid it somewhere in the house. Would Sarah be the one to find the afikomen this year before this big kids did?This is a wonderful story about how young Sarah prepares for one of her favorite holidays, Passover. Throughout the book young Sarah is learning about her Jewish heritage by listening to and helping family members prepare for the holiday. As she helps prepare, she learns about Jewish history. Throughout this book are numerous informative sidebars that can be referred to or directly read to pass on historical information. For example, one of them discusses what is put on the seder plate and its significance. For example, "The bitter foods help people remember how hard it is to be a slave." In 1576, the people of Nabune, a prosperous village on the Noto Hanto peninsula in Japan, hear that the warlord Kenshin is coming with several shiploads of samurai to attack them. Having few weapons, they decide to try and trick their enemy. They gather all of the drums in the village, from the smallest to the giant Taiko, which takes eight men to play it. They build bonfires and make monster masks from bark and seaweed. When the ships approach the shore, the villagers don their masks, light their fires, beat their drums, and dance in a frenzy until at last the samurai sail away, never to return. The suspense that builds as the drums crescendo will have young listeners riveted. Tsukushi's cut-paper illustrations capture the time, place, and mood of the story. If you teach music, drumming, or multi-cultural lessons at an elementary level, you will adore this book. I borrowed it from the library because it was a story from Japan and found that I could use it as a music lesson. And the story is a good one with lots of teaching moments. Then of course I had to buy it because I'll use it every year. Loved it!

This book BEGS to be read aloud. If you love to make loud, interesting noises while you read to your child, you will love this book - if not, you won't like it. It's the story of an ancient village that was to be attacked by an army of samurai warriors, and how they worked together to ward off the threat. The loud noises come about because the villagers have quite a love of drums - drums of many kinds, and the noises of each drum are woven throughout the book. "Don kada-ka, Don kada-ka, don-da, Don-Da, Don-Da, DON!" Very exciting! The book is also illustrated with cut paper designs - the incredible detail is inspiring to those of us who use die-cuts in our scrapbooks.

Thorfinn the nicest Viking and the raging raiders is a really silly book. Thorfinn is the youngest boy in his family and his father is chief of their village Indgar !This book was super fun to read ! It was a quick read, but I really enjoyed it ! I thought the silly mix up between old and modern times was hilarious. The little cartoon drawings were a great addition and I really love the silly Viking information at the end of the book together with the cool trading cards !I bet boys and girls ages 6 and up would rally have fun reading this book !
