I thoroughly enjoyed Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance of Chris Paolini's The Inheritance Cycle series. Originally intended as a trilogy, their bestselling success spawned a fourth book, which was a very welcome addition. I have since handed them down to my nephew where they are enjoying a new life with a new generation.Though they've been out for quite awhile now, I have to be honest and say I bought them years ago, and only got them off the shelf a few months ago. Having been grown up as an avid fan of Dungeons and Dragons, Lord of the Rings, and the usual fantasy fare, I was pretty excited to re-enter that universe. These have been reviewed ad infinitum; so I think I can really only add to the discussion my own experience with the four book as a 47-year-old reader. I was a bit concerned that they might be written a bit too much for kids, as I'd heard they were. But, I have to say, I was definitely misinformed. These are as applicable to adults as the Harry Potter or Hunger Games books or any other well-written fantasy tales that were initially marketed to the teen reader market, but obviously found runaway success with readers from all age brackets. In short, each of the four books was a very fun read, and I would absolutely recommend the series to anyone with an interest in the fantasy genre.

My favorite dragon series is Paolini's. Why do I like it? Of course, Saphira, the Blue Dragon , is a wonderful character. She is a wise and wise-cracking creature with a tremendous sense of humor. Eragon is a believable hero who grows in complexity as he ages and meets the many challenges in his life. We meet elves, dwarves, sorcerers, monsters, witches , a werecat and humans , some good, some evil. What sets this series above the typical dragon fantasy is its very practical understanding of politics. I am amazed at the astuteness of the young author of these works. He understands the impact politics has on our morality and presents numerous examples of the dangers all of us face when presented with political decision making.

A very engaging read. Don't be deterred by criticism. I did not read this series for a long time after hearing much criticism of the young author and now regret that I did not read it sooner. There is a review on here stating that the book is only decent for a 17 year old to have written but not an adult, and that is nonsense. You would not know it was written by a 17 year old unless you were told and it is criticized unfairly because of his age. He does not "borrow" fantasy elements from more widely known authors any more than those widely known authors borrowed from ancient fairy tails. Tolkien and Le Guinn were not any more creative, many fantasy elements in their stories go back to before their stories as well. But this author is judged much more harshly and unjustly because he is young by people who are unable to form their own opinions and blindly judge the worth of a book by its acclaim. And the fact that this book is not a cult classic such as Tolkein's should not affect its merit. It is a very good book and is only insulted by those jealous of the young author's success.

Can’t say it’s the best written book ever if you’re an adult. Much of the book is written a little vanilla plain. However, it is a very good story and well written considering Pasolini was fifteen years old when he started to write this novel. This entire series is worth reading a few times. Don’t waste your time on the movie as it’s nothing like the book and the only thing used from the book in the movie is the character names.

I thoroughly enjoyed Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance of Chris Paolini's The Inheritance Cycle series. On pages: 237-244 and 261-268 there is a black strip at the top, the margins are screwed up, the page numbers are at different heights. I'm assuming that this is a printing issue, so I'm doing a return. There is also a lot of adhesive residue on the back cover.Edit 1: this is ridiculous. This replacement is also damaged, and mismade. The dust cover is bunched and slightly torn. The printing on the dust cover is off center, to the point that the spine text looks fully right aligned, not centered. Dropping to one star, because this is unacceptable.

I liked reading this book so that I could discuss it with my grandson who'd read it. He let me know he'd read the series, but warned me the movie wasn't so hot. I suppose for a fantasy novel (of which genre I rarely read), it was fine. The best part was enjoying with someone else. I think it's pretty impressive that the author wrote it at such a young age too. There's a lot of imagination here, but at times, I felt like Paolini was trying to be a Tolkein, and just adding a dragon into the mix.

In the early 90s, after being introduced to the health benefits of polyphenols (anti-aging compounds found in grapes and grapevines) by a scientist while visiting her parents Boudeaux vineyard, Mathilde Thomas and her husband, Bertrand, started their skin care company, Caudalie. In The French Beauty Solution, Ms. Thomas generously shares what she's learned since then about skincare and much more.Right at the beginning of the book, Mathilde introduces us to the "Pleasure Principle", which simply means that your beauty routine should not just make you look good - it should also make you feel good. Basic, yet important. Starting here will ensure that everything you do from that point will naturally fall into place. Far too many women think it's necessary to spend a small fortune or undergo expensive, painful procedures to look good. Mathilde shares that this just isn't necessary. Holistic and preventative measures are much more cost-effective, simple and painless. The French Beauty Solution is thorough, organized and engaging. There is a wealth of information contained for treating the outside, as well as the inside, of our bodies. It's clear that Ms. Thomas knows her stuff. I love that it's obvious that she has not written this book merely as a way to promote her skin care company - she shares far too much valuable information. In fact, there's an entire section of recipes that use ingredients that most of us probably have in our kitchen cupboards right now. In addition to skin care, there's also a great deal of practical advice on healthy eating, hair care, the safe way to detox with a natural grape cleanse, make-up tips and much more.I would recommend The French Beauty Solution to anyone, of any age, looking for a comprehensive guide for achieving their ultimate health and beauty goals.eBook Review Gal received a complimentary ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Beauty ReviewAn entertaining read which provides a basic understanding of skin, how to care for it, which ingredients to use, and a dash of French beauty philosophy. Recommended for people wishing to learn the basics of skin care and beauty from the French perspective.I bought this book because I've recently been having problems with my skin after many years of neglect - I was a Buddhist Monk and pretty thoroughly abused my body in my pursuit of liberating my mind. I'm now approaching my thirties and that abuse has begun to surface on my skin - red, splotchy, and uncomfortable at times. It was time, I decided, to try and learn more about it and give it some more care and love. And, in addition to technical knowledge and useful tips, I was also looking for something entertaining and philosophical. This fit the bill. The book is an entertaining mixture of biography, history, cultural commentary, beauty philosophy, psychology, and how-to with a generous splash of science and a touch of self-promotion.Mathilde Thomas, the author of this book and founder of Claudelie, a hugely successful beauty products company, covers a wide-range of topics using her life-long experience and knowledge in the field of skin-care and fashion. She covers nutrition, how to eat, the importance of confidence and authenticity in discovering one's on personal beauty, the how-to and why of skin care, including sections on the body and the hands (these were, admittedly rather short, but they felt just right for the scope of the book), a long list of suggested ingredients, a wise choice given the fast-paced nature of the industry, all of which is woven within sweet little stories from her life, vignettes of classic French beauties, or a few sharp remarks about beauty philosophy. After reading the book, I felt I had a good foundation in skin care, both in terms of how the skin works and how to take care of it, and can now do so fairly independently. I'm also philosophical by nature, so I quite enjoyed her jaunts discussing the French aesthetic and French culture - I did not agree with everything that she said nor will I do everything that she suggested, but it was helpful in clarifying my own views on this subject which I'd neglected for so long. To her credit, she never came across as preachy - she was just sharing her views in an honest, straightforward way. It was great. There were, however, some problems with the book. First, she spoke in very broad stroked about two vastly diverse people and cultures - French and American. The foil of American culture was a great device for the book - contrast helps see things more clearly, but she could have been a little more careful in her writing to acknowledge the diversity in these two cultures rather than presenting them as one-dimensional monoliths. What about black Americans and French? What about Jewish Americans and French? Gays? Outsiders? And other French or American sub-cultures? All of these groups have their own unique philosophy, standards of beauty, and practices. The account she gave was impoverished by her silence.I would like to reply to some of the gripes that people have made about her supposed cultural arrogance. I didn't share this feeling at all - I'm an American, and I felt like she tried her best to give a fair appraisal of each culture. That all cultures are created equal is something I don't believe in, and I felt it fair for her to praise and share the virtues of a culture and people which she takes a healthy degree of pride in. She wasn't accusatory or lambasting Americans at all. I find such criticism to be unwarranted.Second, a tad bit of the science was bad. Her writings about the tremendous health benefits of wine have been largely debunked. Her intrinsic fear of "unnatural" products and her confidence in "natural" products was too sweeping and ungrounded in fact. There's a more nuanced middle-ground that she failed to find. Fortunately for her though, there are many people in her camp so for readers who agree with her views will find her a welcomed ally and useful resource. But, to be fair, a lot of what she said was true and backed up by numerous studies.Third, the writing was good but not great. The feeling of the book was similar to sitting down and having a glass of wine with the author on some late evening in France - sophisticated, learned, but casual. But while it was good conversation, it was not beautiful conversation and would be well served to have a make-over.Other than these minor issues, the book was great and I now feel ready to start taking steps to heal my skin and protect it in the future.

I really enjoyed this book. I learned a lot about skin care and products to try and products to avoid. Yes, there is some shameless plugs for this particular brand of cosmetics, but really, what do you expect? The author owns her own company and mentions some of her products. You know what that tells me? It tells me that she produces skin care products that she really believes in and does the job they are supposed to do. You don't have to use her brand, if you don't want to - I'm sure there are other products out there with the same components that would produce a similar effect. But this book is written in a way that me, a non-scientist, can understand why certain ingredients are used and understand what they actually do to your skin. I truly enjoyed the read and will probably refer back to this book when I purchase any cosmetics in the future. If anything, the book has made me more aware of what I put on my skin. And that's a good thing.

I use Caudalie products and was interested in what the founder had to say about her brand. I didn't realize it would be a how-to on all French beauty secrets. It's definitely an ad for Caudalie products, which shouldn't be surprising considering the source, but it has many other tips and recommended brands not tied to Caudalie. Did I buy more of the products at the end -- yes. Do I regret it -- no. I especially liked the step by step on how to make your own serums, and can go to a Natural Grocers or Sprouts for the oils and make my own. But her overall tone is a good example of why Americans find the French a bit pretentious :)

The information was good and while the author was enthusiastic about her topics, she was also weirdly condescending in describing the differences between the French and Americans. Even her compliments seemed backhanded. I suppose that may be a French thing to do, but I found it distracting. I do love Caudalie products, so I was looking forward to reading her book. Overall I still enjoyed it.

I recently lost my dog, Little Dude, in a hit and run accident. He died in front of the Animal Hospital. We were too late. We were walkers and for three weeks I couldn't go near the park or where he was killed. My therapist recommended this book which covers all types of grieving. For me the Chapter on Lose of a Pet, got me through some really sad times.

I absolutely loved this book. It was written with compassion and feeling for those who have lost loved ones. It helps you to think about how you want to continue on with your life after a death and provides daily affirmations to help you do this.

I especially enjoyed the first two chapters. If for some reason, I did not have time to read the entire book, I could have benefited from just the first two chapters which set the tone and provided important tools which the reader gets to use and reuse throughout the rest of the book and become proficient using. BUT READ the entire book. These two awesome folks give us many new ways of looking at, thinking about, and talking about the ending of relationships and marriages. So so so important to most of us.For many years, I did not understand my friends' attachment to their pets. One day, I remembered why. When I was eleven, my dog was given away rather abruptly, and no one walked me through that grief process, and on some levels, I "hated" pets for a long time after that. There is a wonderful chapter in this book about pets and the importance of grieving their loss."You Can Heal Your Heart...." is a very easy and fast read, which is always HELPFUL in a self-help book. Buy it NOW. I will reread this "work" over and over again, and so will you.Thank You, David and Louise.

I purchased this book because I lost my husband several years ago. I was looking for something to help me navigate through my grief and loss. Though the authors do cover other aspects of loss, I was disappointed that they didn’t spend more time on the death of a spouse.

This is a beautiful book. I read it while grieving the death of my partner to cancer. It offers bits of wisdom not readily found in run of the mill grief texts. Highly recommended.

I am going through the aftermath of a breakup and was having a hard time. I have been a fan of Louise Hay for a long time. Something guided me to this book and it has done wonders already and I am only on the second chapter. I would recommend this book to anyone who has grief, heartache, or any feelings of loss.

This book came to me in a time of desperate need. Losing 3 people that I loved deeply and going through a terrible divorce after 30 years of marriage. It helped me to heal my heart!

Good book, but still lots of questions. But it opened some thoughts to make it clearer. I'M not the first and for sure not the last.

Review

"An accomplished and engaging biography of a remarkably resourceful and determined woman, whose story shed considerable light on the role of southern Unionism in undermining the Confederate war effort, military and otherwise, and on the women who embodied and actively sustained that cause."--Civil War History"A thrilling detective story filled with clandestine meetings, cloak-and-dagger intrigue, disguises, surveillance and undercover work. While such well-known Civil War women spies as Belle Boyd and Rose O'Neal Greenhow remain shrouded in partisan mythology, Varon has unearthed hard evidence that establishes Van Lew as a genuine heroine of the Civil War era."--Raleigh News & Observer"A rich account of a complex and important figure in wartime Richmond...Highly readable."--Civil War Book Review"Groundbreaking and altogether remarkable...A classic 'forgotten woman' study...as accessible to the lay reader as a novel."--Publishers Weekly (starred review)"This is a wonderfully readable and engaging book. Varon brings Van Lew out of the realm of myth and into the much more interesting domain of history, offering us a woman who as spy, abolitionist and woman's rights advocate was at once larger than life and at the center of her time."--Drew Gilpin Faust, Director of the Radcliffe Institute, author of Mothers of Invention: Women of the Slaveholding South in the American Civil War"Detailed, astute and convincing."--Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post"A solid job of ferreting out facts and discarding fiction...What is presented here is the fullest scholarly treatment we are likely to have, and if Varon finds her subject to be one who loved and served her country to the end, the fascinating record speaks for itself."--Roanoke Times"A thoughtful, meticulously researched biography."--Washington Times"Popular Civil War literature is filled with romantic and sensational stories of female spies, many of them made up out of whole cloth. But the story told in Southern Lady, Yankee Spy, is eminently true. A member of the social elite in Richmond, Elizabeth Van Lew nevertheless loved the Union and disliked slavery. She built a Unionist underground in the Confederate capital that helped escaping prisoners of war and provided General Grant with valuable intelligence. Based on thorough research and written with grace and style, this account of Van Lew's contribution to Northern victory is a valuable addition to Civil War scholarship."--James M. McPherson, author of Battle Cry of Freedom and Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam"This is a wonderfully readable and engaging book. Varon brings Van Lew out of the realm of myth and into the much more interesting domain of history, offering us a woman who as spy, abolitionist and woman's rights advocate was at once larger than life and at the center of her time."--Drew Gilpin Faust, Director of the Radcliffe Institute, author of Mothers of Invention: Women of the Slaveholding South in the American Civil War"Elizabeth Varon's Southern Lady, Yankee Spy is a well-researched, well-written tale that illuminates a fascinating southern dissenter and forges a sensible path toward bringing women into the military narrative of the Civil War."--William W. Freehling, author of The Road to Disunion and The South vs. The South"Few women risked as much to assist the Union effort during the Civil War as Elizabeth Van Lew. A member of Richmond's elite, Van Lew orchestrated an effort in the Confederate capital that conveyed useful information to United States military forces, embraced emancipation, and supported Radical Republican policies during Reconstruction. Elizabeth Varon's biography draws on substantial research to offer a long-overdue, and compelling, portrait of a complex and important figure."--Gary W. Gallagher, University of Virginia, author of The Confederate War

This is a terrific book on a figure in American history who deserves more attention. As far as I know, at this point it's the leading, authoritative bio on Elizabeth Van Lew at this point, particularly because it effectively and convincingly dispels myths that have surrounded her for so long--most notably the inaccuracy about Bet being "crazy" or feigning mental illness in order to spy.The book also provides a great picture of Civil War and post-Civil War Richmond as well as rapidly evolving times after the war, with all the factions, political dynamics, and cultural change bubbling at the time. Given Van Lew's life arc, the story is a classically tragic one--a hero who struggles and is met with disappointment after disappointment in the years following her moment of greatness, the moment of her great contribution to a nation. One question I would have for author Veron is why she didn't tackle the question of whether Van Lew was abused by her caregiver/relative during her later years.Even if the author disputes that supposition, it would seem to be something to be addressed, given that Van Lew's journal seems to suggest it.That does not detract from the book's overall effect and importance. It's a must-read for those interested in Richmond history, unsung Civil War heroes (such as women and African Americans), and the complexities of a city and state that--to the surprise of many, I'm sure--were home to a strong pro-Union faction (loyalists). Thanks to Veron for a big contribution.

A wonderful story!

A fascinating, true story...well told and written...

This book was purchased for a class. It provides a nice narrative on both gender and Civil War history.

Interesting. She was a very brave and dedicated woman. She did not get enough recognition and thanks. I Han never even heard of her or woman like her before from history books. She risked her life and gave up so much.

Living in Richmond, I have heard lots of stories about this lady. I was born 3 blooks from her house, but I never ever realized the extent that she was involved with my two families on my Grandmothers side. If you like historical facts this is an eye opener.

Excellent. Lots of research and very we'll written.

Exciting author. Couldn't wait to read the next chapter. So much history that we don't know about--quite a story.

Review

"Brilliant and original. . . . The Sacred Fire of Liberty is a challenging book, bristling with ideas and filled with fine shades of emphasis and meaning. Yet there is . . . no jargon or academic obfuscation, and the attentive reader should have no trouble following the argument."―Evan Cornog, New York Times Book Review"No one who has followed Banning's account of Madison's development . . . will read The Federalist or plot the trajectory of his career in quite the same way again. This is no small achievement."―Edmund S. Morgan, The New Republic"Well researched and eloquently rendered. . . . An essential addition to the scholarship on the New Republic."―Library Journal"The Sacred Fire of Liberty is a work of tremendous erudition; an intellectual biography of James Madison that changes and enriches our understanding of the man, his thought, and the part he played in the Founding. . . . It is safe to say that any future study of Madison will begin with this insightful and well-argued reinterpretation."―Virginia Quarterly Review"This is quite possibly the best political biography of Madison you will every see, and a wonderful analysis of Madison as both framer and one of the authors of The Federalist."―Byte"Banning's treatment of James Madison is original and brilliant. His book is a landmark to the scholarship of the American republic and to an essential Founder. The Sacred Fire of Liberty will remain the authority on Madison for years to come."―Rob Edmonds, McCormick Messenger

From the Back Cover

James Madison was the finest democratic theorist that the United States has ever produced. His was the pivotal philosophical role in framing the Constitution and establishing the principles on which a wholly new form of government was to be based. Yet this widely informed and profoundly original thinker has been considered by most scholars to be an intellectual pragmatist who reacted variably and inconsistently to the changing circumstances of the Revolution and the Confederation. Lance Banning's powerful and persuasive reexamination of Madison's thought at the critical early and central stages of his career now changes that presumption, and provides a new base from which thinking about Madison and the Founding must start. The Sacred Fire of Liberty follows Madison from his appearance on the national stage (in Congress in 1780) through the end of 1792. By the end of this period, he had achieved his mature understanding of the Constitution, and his collision with many of the other Federalists of 1788 had made him a leader of the opposition to the administration of George Washington. Banning convinces the reader, through his meticulous research and deeply contextualized presentation of the shifting issues of the period, that Madison indeed held to consistent principles: he was at once a more committed democrat and a less eager nationalist than usually has been thought. The thinking that had underpinned his actions at the great convention, his numbers of The Federalist, and the supposed reversal of positions represented by his joining with Thomas Jefferson to form the first Republican party had firmed by 1792 into the understandings that would guide the rest of his career.

Lance Banning passed away on Jan. 31 of this year. When I learned this I decided to change the focus of my review a little.First, what do I mean by the hermeneutics of generosity? By hermeneutics I mean a scheme or method of interpretation. An intellectual biographer who uses a hermeneutics of generosity starts off with certain assumptions. Everything people do they do for reasons. From the point of view of the biographical subject they are always good reasons. If you believe your subject to be a person of exacting moral standards and exceptional intelligence, then you assume that everything they have done can be back up by compelling arguments that have been long considered. This style of hermeneutics is obvious in two ways in Banning's work. Obviously, in the way he approaches Madison. But the first thing I want to talk about is the way Banning reacts to other scholars. His notes are extraordinary. Banning read everyone who had written on Madison and located his interpretations in relation to that of others. He not only carefully explains the differences between his interpretations and those of others (e.g., Martin Diamond, Gordon Woods, Paul Rahe and Jennifer Nedelsky among others) but he also points out the strengths of their alternatives. This was a man who knew how to listen to his sources and not just to one up them. But it is really in regard to James Madison that Banning's approach shines through in all its humanity. Banning believes that there is a standard version of Madion's intellectual biography that is largely wrong. That standard version is based on the biographies of Irving Brant and Ralph Ketcham and the intellectual histories of Gordon Woods and Martin Diamond. In the standard version, James Madison (JM) started off as a strong nationalist in the early 1780s. He was part of the movement at that time to modify the Articles or to change them completely. JM's method of constitutional interpretation at that time is usually considered to have been expansive or willing to loosely construe the document so as to justify non-explicit central government powers (e.g., Morris' national bank).JM's nationalistic period continued all the way through his work at the Constitutional Convention, the writing of The Federalist and his first year in the new Congress. However, when Hamilton's economic programs began to unfold during the second and third terms of Congress, JM began to backpedal on his nationalism and his expansive constructionism. By the mid-1790s, JM is usually seen as a strict constructionist and a states rights theorist who would remain so all his life. Thus the standard version gives us two Madisons, who can only be connected by various versions of the Madison as practical or conniving politician who changed his stripes due to the political winds of the moment.Banning will have none of this. He believes the standard version misrepresents all aspects of JM's career. Banning believes that if we take JM's writings throughout his life seriously, then he clearly see a very consistent thinker whose whole career is centered around the dynamic problem of how to ground government on the people without being exposed to the inconveniences or "excesses" of democratic rule. I will limit my discussion of Banning's revisionism (his term) to his interpretation of two aspects of JM's career that are essential to his argument. The first is JM's career in the Continental Congress of the early 1780s. The democratic excesses were showing up in the Confederation period in the behavior of the states.Banning shows that in the early 1780s that JM was indeed a nationalist but a qualified one. JM read the national scene from the point of view of Virginia and from his understanding of revolutionary politics. Any national measure that wasn't good for Virginia was unlikely to be favored by JM. As for the Conferderation, the problem was the weakness of the federal Union. If the structural flaws of the Articles could be amended, the misbehavior of the states could be controlled. Thus, at this point in his career, Madison was not part of the movement that wanted to jettison the Articles. He merely wanted to amend them to make implicit powers explicit. That point is very important. Banning argues forcefully from JM's writings that even at this point, JM was a strict constructionist. So the standard version is wrong in two ways about the early Madison. The other central moment in Banning's revision is the aftermath of the Constitutional Convention, especially, the writing of The Federalist. This is usually seen as one of the strongest arguments for the standard view. It is well known that Madison expressed dismay after the Convention about the prospects for the longevity of the new government should it be ratified. He was upset that his suggestion for a national veto of the laws of the individual states had not been written into the finished document. He also was dismayed that the representation in the Senate was equal for each state. He thought this repeated a fundamental flaw in the Articles. And yet, within two months, JM was well into writing The Federalist where he explicitly agreed with both of these decisions by the Convention. Most readers, including myself, find this to be a little disingenuous on Madison's part. But for Banning, this was indicative of JM having changed his mind. According to Banning, during the course of reflecting on the work of the Convention and of writing The Federalist, JM must have realized that his opponents in the Convention had compelling reasons for doing what they did and he therefore changed his mind. Banning states that anyone who has written out a long argument is familiar with changing their mind during the course of the writing. Fair enough. But this brings me to the two main issues that I had with Banning's whole thesis. As proof that JM accepted the counterarguments against his idea of a national government veto, Banning claims that JM never tried to push that idea again after his writing of The Federalist. In this, I think he can be shown to be, at least, partially wrong. When JM first introduced his Bill of Rights proposal to the first Congress, his fifth Amendment stated "No state shall violate the equal rights of conscious, or the freedom of the press, or the trial by jury in criminal cases." It seems to me to be arguable that JM was trying to get through as much of a national veto as he thought possible. The theoretician was trimming his sails to the political winds. This is not a bad thing. Most any reasonable reformer will take what they can get.But it speaks to one of the central tensions in JM's thought and Banning's revisionism. JM obviously believed that any government, to be legitimate, had to be founded on the people. But he did not trust the people to behave, to not become a "factious" majority willing to strip the rightsof some minority. As far as I can read, JM or Banning's version thereof never gives us a definition of what sets off a "factious" majority from a majority pursuing the true interests of the country. This is where Madison the politician enters. I often feel that JM, like Jefferson, was willing to take advantage of political changes and that they were more than willing to alter or bend their philosophies to do so. When they were out of power, it was easy to be consistent theorists. Once in power, it turned out that there were more things to deal with than dreamed of in their philosophies. Unlike Prof. Banning, I am okay with that. I do not feel that Banning succeeds in explaining away this tendency of JM's. I suggest that when you read this book that you keep a copy of the Library of America's edition of Madison's Writings near to hand. It contains most of the papers that JM wrote which Banning uses. Read each one before you read the corresponding section of Banning and see if you always agree with what Banning makes of that particular writing. I did not.Have I learned from the reading of this book? Yes, yes, O my yes. This is an extraordinarily learned book written with a generous and respectful scholastic spirit. Banning has changed much of how I read Madison if not as much as he might have wished. But the real pleasures of this book have to do as much with spending time with Lance Banning's intellect and spirit as those of JM.In fact, perhaps the highest compliment I can pay the author is that I think that James Madison would have found him a kindred spirit. One final note: the Liberty Fund is publishing a volume this summer edited by David Womersley entitled Liberty and American Experience in the Eighteenth Century. It will contain what is probably Banning's last publication- an article entitle, "Federalism, Constitutionalism, and Republican Liberty: The First Constructions of the Constitution". I plan to be among the first to read it. Do I have my geek on or what?

It's on the syllabus for a Masters Government class that I'm taking this summer, so It's fine for that purpose.

Lance Bannings book is excellent, and long ovedue. History has left us a view of Madison that suggested he was Jefferson's lieutenant, an apostate to his nationilistic views in the 1790's, one view even diminished him to a 'trimmer' of ideas. The average person knows little of the Father of the Constituion, and as Jack Rakove stated at Princeton this February passed, we are learning what Madison always knew. Most views of Madison are not the result of individual study and research, many opinions of Madison arise from previous treatments. Banning began with the exchanges of Madison and found the consistency Madison always claimed. The actual history of Madison reveals an enormously capacious, hard working force behind the Constituion, Bill of Rights,The Federalist Papers, 41 years of public service, and the workings and definition of goverment. Viewed by friend and political foes as, brilliant and ' one adept at committee work and reasoned argument, one who could be depended on to speak and write with precision and force what others could express but vauely and in part.' Banning has surpassed those before him in Madisonian scholarship, by ardously discovering The Real Madison. The attention to detail is excellent, and the scholarship is not self defending just revealing. As Madison's true nature unfolds the consistency is revealed, from lieutenant to an independent thinker, and finally to the proper position of one the key thinkers behind American government. Being one dependent on scholars for my view of history, and granting then occaisonally the keepers of arcanum a merit they do not deserve, it is refreshing to have Lance Bannings contribution not only to Madisonian scholarship, but also to American History. The ongoing efforts by Dave Mattern and the Papers of James Madison have brought enormous information to light in the last few years, and it appears the work of Banning may be the beginning of Madison taking his deserved place in our history and common parlance, a parlance altered by the independent and ardous study this book represents.

The Yoga-Sutra of Patanjali: A New Translation with Commentary (Shambhala Classics), by Chip Hartranft

From Booklist

The Yoga-Sutra of Patanjali is a classic Sanskrit treatise consisting of 195 "threads" or aphorisms describing a process of liberation through yoga. Little is known about Patanjali, although most scholars estimate that he lived in India circa 200-300 B.C., possibly as early as 500 B.C. Patanjali organized the sutras into four parts: Samadhi (absorption), Sadhana (practice), Vibhuti (supernatural powers), and Kaivalya (liberation), and it adds up to a dense, difficult text describing the workings of consciousness and explaining how, through yoga, one can obtain liberation from the suffering caused by fluctuations in the mind. Attempting a new translation and commentary is an ambitious project for a layman like Hartranft, founder of a center dedicated to integrating yoga and Buddhist traditions, and his translation is notable for his attempts to interpret the sutras from a modern American Buddhist perspective. Hartranft occasionally oversimplifies and takes some questionable liberties in his zeal to link Patanjali to the Buddha, but his translation certainly succeeds in making Patanjali's esoteric theories comprehensible to today's readers. Review

"Extraordinarily clear. . . . Hartranft makes Patañjali's complications seem somehow obvious."—Shambhala Sun "A Yoga Sutra for the twenty-first century . . . translated into plain (but not boring) accessible language. . . . If there's a more succinct explanation of the enduring value of Patañjali's work, I'd sure like to hear it."—Yoga Journal "Chip Hartranft has given us a fresh, authoritative, and brilliant new translation of and commentary on the Yoga-Sutra, and an entire generation of American yogis should be deeply grateful. His work successfully combines intellectual precision with emotional accessibility—a powerful marriage seldom even attempted with this notoriously difficult text. Hartranft is careful always to leave Patañjali's own genius in the foreground, and as a result the astounding intellectual architecture of the Yoga-Sutra shines through. Bravo!"—Stephen Cope, author of Yoga and the Quest for the True Self "Much of contemporary yoga in the West has emphasized breathing and the body. These invaluable practices have been separated from the comprehensive ethical and meditative approach of the great teacher Patañjali. Recently there has been an increased interest in correcting this limitation. Chip Hartranft's brilliant new translation of and commentary on Patañjali's masterpiece moves interested yogis decisively in this direction. It is a clear and inspiring work of immense value for all serious practitioners."—Larry Rosenberg, author of Breath by Breath and Living in the Light of Death

This is the translation of the sutras I've been looking for! I've been reading Swami Satchidananda's translation The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali for years. It has peasant, flowery commentaries on SOME of the sutras (and zero an many others). But while reading Satchidananda, I always got the impression that this all must make some sense, but I'm surely not getting it out of this book. Contrary to other reviewers, I found Hartranft's commentaries wonderfully understandable. Any reviewer who found Hartranft difficult hasn't read anything by Iyengar, whom I find impenetrable. Hartranft explains in the Introduction what the sutras are all about (something no other translation I've ever come across has done), and then reinforces those fundamentals as her translates and comments, finding logical groupings of sutras. Spoiler alert: There IS an overarching meaning to the sutras!

This needs to be reconsidered in light of "The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali: A Biography" by David Gordon White. White has many surprising findings that contradict many of the assumptions that have been made of this text since Swami Vivekananda revived the Yoga Sutras and brought it to the West. One of the most important revelations is that the book might actually originally have had a Buddhist orientation. A significant number of modern scholars think commentator Vyasa revised it specifically to make it more palatable to Hindus, and may even have written the fourth and last section himself. Especially noteworthy is that the Isvara of Patanjali is not a Creator God or a god of divine intervention, but closely resembles "Buddha nature" of Mayahana Buddhism. That suggests that the critics here complaining of the author's Buddhist interpretations are quite wrong. If you are a serious student, pick up D.G.White's book, which is better in Kindle format, then read or reread Hartranft.

Very insightful. I found it somewhat difficult to read as I am new to the terminology but the inserted English references were helpful.

I bought this book because it is one of my reads for my 200 hr yoga teacher training. It was very interesting and philosophical.

Highly recommended. Easy to understand. The translation is well documented.

For any Yogi this is a definite must read book.

The book is written well and is very easy to understand for beginners. It is an excellent source of information.

A wonderful translation and commentary which I reference often in my study and yoga teaching! Excellent insight and thought provoking.

I have been coding CFML since Coldfusion 5, and I have long used the Cold Fusion MX book as a reference in my daily work, so I was happy to get the new books to help with using some of the newer features. So this is a large jump from my book for version 6, there is a lot more in the book, but also a lot less. I went ahead and got all three books in the series, and one of the things that I found was missing was the CFML tag reference at the end of the book. I know that sometimes I do work while on the road, and so do not have internet access, but they seem to only want to have that information on-line.In my review of Volume 3, I did complain about half the book being on-line only and not actually in the print book. When you buy a book, it is nice to actually get the book.I am far from a new user of Coldfusion so I can not speak of how well it teaches the language, but as a long time user, I do find this series as a nice reference. One things that does seem to be missing is talking about which of the features are new to 8, which were added in 7, and so on. I know that in my development, I need to constantly support customers who are on old version of Coldfusion, so that would be a great thing to have with the Tag reference.Hope this helps people out there...

I've been around the CF community for over 12 years. In the early days, there were numerous authors and there was competion so I think folks were more customer oriented. Forta, et. al., have become the gurus so they just keep curning out their brand of book, which are less than stellar. I think they know the subject matter so well that they can't bring it down to the mortal level.Another complaint is that you have to work really hard to find all the info about a give subject and there is no guarantee that you may ever find that piece one bit that you really need. Finally, the 3 volume set has no overall index so you are forced to look in every book for whatever you are trying to find. More often than not, it is the overflow chapters that are offline, so to speak. They used to include a CD with these chapters.I finally download all of their online stuff so I can quickly reference it off of my harddrive, but it is less than satisifying.

no one puts it better then Ben. touches on all basic parts of coldfusion and sql. you would be crippled if you did not pick this book up! i used online tutorials for a while. and after reading some of this book. i know i get alot more out of this book then any video tutorial. you buy this book you can sell it in a year and not lose any money, if you would even want to !

For years, the Web Application Construction Kit has been the gold standard by which ColdFusion books are judged. This new edition, updated for the latest version of ColdFusion, continues in that tradition.Previous editions have been a bit daunting, so the authors this time wisely decided to split into three volumes instead of the normal two. Volume 1 introduces readers to the basic concepts behind setting up ColdFusion and beginning to write their first applications. Once the basics are covered, it moves on to show how to connect to databases and display that information, create and use forms and their data, make printable content, and set up a basic application framework - pretty much, everything a newcomer to the language would need to know. The thing that struck me, an advanced ColdFusion developer, about this edition was that many books claim to preach accepted best practices but then sacrifice them in the name of simplicity. These authors, on the other hand, practice what they preach. For years, ColdFusion developers have been stressing the need to create multi-tier applications using ColdFusion Components, and yet most introductory materials on the language have relegated CFCs to advanced courses. This book introduces them as soon as it reasonably can - about half way through - and then follows the "proper" format of using multi-tier applications from then on. So this is not another book that just shows how to create ColdFusion applications, but is rather a book that shows how to build them correctly. The ColdFusion Web Application Construction Kit: Volume 1 is a book that no beginning ColdFusion developer should be without, and even the most experienced developers are bound to learn a few things along the way. It is quite simply the book that no ColdFusion developer at any level can do without.

Like the book says "Getting Started". I would say that this book it's good for beginners who wants to know the ColdFusion 8 technology and get a bit deep into it. You will learn about the configuration, dreamweaver wizard, database fundamentals, datasource, basic ColdFusion tags, basic forms and search, basic validations, understanding components, some ajax examples, generating reports, how to configure your Application.cfm/cfc, a bit of how to plan an Application, and will know the basics of Session. The book has an project that you can follow if you want or just use it to learn what chapter do you really need. It's incredible the Power of ColdFusion 8 for Web Applications. Instead of learning other languages such php/asp, go and learn ColdFusion and get your application finished sooner than ever before, you won't regret about CF8.I would recommend this book if you are starting this ColdFusion World, and the others (volume 2, 3) as well.

I was one of many reviewers that write on amazon reviews that Forta is the most respected and skillful technical writer ever borned. His writing style is not only a joy of reading but also an effective educational style. So far so good. But in the last 8 series books I'm almost sure that Forta hasn't write more than 2-3 chapters and he just marketing these books by his name in the front cover. No more the funny style of writing, no more logical sequence in the chapters and many many others. Sorry Ben but the old quality has been lost. I wouldn't suggest the 8th edition books because they are not from Ben or Ben has lost his style, or maybe his name name has to be written in the same size as the other writers.
