I have shopped in the grocery store of parenting books since our first was born 7 years ago. We now have 3, and I was really looking forward to reading this book. The format of the book does not appeal to me. The book is based on a series of group sessions the authors had with some parents over a period of time. It's verbose, and not terribly compelling. I think it could be summarized in about 10 pages, but then their wouldn't be a book. While I find some of the "techniques" and "observations" to have merit, I don't feel they are grounded in anything but the authors experience. This is not a Carol Dweck, or an Angela Duckworth. Faber does not have a PhD in Psychology, and Mazlish did not either, at the time of her passing in 2017. I would also say much of the book is too simplistic, not realistic, and I think part of the reason is that the authors simply do not have the grounding that trained psychologists do. They spend about 2% of the book on what to do when children are physical with one another. I felt their coverage of the subject to be completely lacking. I'll keep up the search for a better book on siblings.

Arrived on time. Great book. Easy read. Practical advice. I immediatly implemented a couple of the suggestions and tantrums (from our spectum child) eased tremendously.All kids want to be heard and understood; not shut down when they show an emotion.While you can't act with out consequences this book teaches acknowledgement.

This book is truly phenomenal. I was riveted. It has helped me tremendously not only with my two children (3 and 1), but with my other family members as well. Problem solving, conflict resolution, listening, and love are all covered in this essential guide to living happily with others.

Was familiar with the authors from a previous book, this one is an absolute gold mine of information! Very well written, easy to read, sums up everything you need to know and how to apply everything and MOSTLY, IT WORKS!!!! No matter the age of the siblings - up to late adulthood - this is truly amazing information to make siblings relationship work. I loved all the many examples. I think it really cheers everything about that subject.

Amazing insights. I was terrified when I found out our upcoming child would create the same older bro younger sis dynamic I had with my brother that has been pretty traumatic. I blamed birth order but I’m reading this book I see so many ways to improve sibling relations, things I would never have thought of. It made me look at my sibling relationship very differently and realize that it’s not birth order or how many kids or rich or poor - it’s just how you raise them. Amazing book. Devoured it in 24 hrs

Beat money I have ever spent. My 3.5 y.o and 1.5 y.o daughters went from not being able to be in the same room without supervision to loving each other and playing together in a healthy way. There is still conflict between them but we deal with it in a way that doesn't create resentment. This all happened within a few days after I implemented the practices described in this book. I am reading the book again ti make sure it all stinks in!

wow, super helpful. My kids are 4 and 1 and it is useful even to me! And it's interesting looking back on having two siblings. Wish my parents would have read this book. I liked it so much I bought another book by these women.

This really changed the way I parent. If you had sibling issues as a kid, this is a must read so you don't pass that on. Things changed with the way my kids interact as well. I highly recommend it.

I really liked this travelogue. The author starts north in Torino and moves south geographically instead of her actual chronology. She is very descriptive and tells some stories about their travels in many cases but in some instance just lists restaurant and places to go. I would have like more detail in those spots. I like that she has added recipes and plan on trying a few. This book makes me want to get online and book a trip right now. I also like that she included links to reading material related to the place so that I can get further information on interesting topics. However, I have two major gripes with this book. The first is a lack of a map of any kind. I know, I can go to google maps and look something up but it is tedious, time consuming and breaks the flow of the book. The second is a lack of photos. I wanted photos of some of the specific places or foods she talked about but I also wanted pictures of the finished product in the recipes. When she described an egg stall at a market, I wanted to see the multishaped, multicolored eggs. When she described a carved, green marble ambo in a church, I wanted to see it. This book would have been much more powerful and interesting with photos. I think these are major flaws that hopefully will be fixed by publication. I’ll give it three stars now but would give it four of five if maps and photos are added. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. 4.5 starsMayes brings her delectable writing style to the pages of this travelogue/memoir/guide for all of us who wish we could take two weeks to walk in her shoes. Italy isn't just a place but an attitude and way of living, something Mayes makes clear through gently describing the distinctions between one little town and another.This is not a book you pick up with your map in hand to help you plan your trip to Italy so much as it is like a first date (or first date in a long time) with the Italian way to spend your day. Yes, she has the book organized in such a way that you could look up the province and town you want to visit to see her recommendations. However, she doesn't cover every little town (nor should she, as this isn't Frommer's) and she presents them in a well-organized tapestry of anecdotes of her experiences there. Mayes implies so much about what it means to be Italian and live like one without having to hold your hand to communicate it.Read it because I have a feeling you'll learn how to appreciate Italy after you travel through it with her. Perhaps you'll even find a way to sit in a cafe around your own corner and ponder with peaceful quiet the way she can in Italy. You'll get both story and guide in this book. Thank you, Frances Mayes! Now I'm saving up for another trip to Italy!

It’s a wonderful book for anyone who has visited Italy or contemplates a trip in the future. And, be sure to have a map handy so you can visual the areas and plan your own adventures. newbie author to me, France Mayes ... i look forward to reading more from her soon enough!! love the cover!! now i have seen the movie " Under The Tuscan Sun" with Diane Lane a billion times, love that movie, i am curious if it follows the authors read to the tee or what? I was super lucky to get an ARC ...not sure if this was a Goodreads giveaway or? no literature was in the book when i got it shipped to me??! love that when that happens but wish i knew who to thank??! thanks!! i love cooking, recipes ... i would love to see Italy and Australia ...yet to get to travel overseas. we have many locations in the US and Canada. so it was like this book was meant for me ... to tide me over a bit ..while i wait to see Italy ... i know i am part Italian ... i just gotta be ...not that i have been told so but i feel it. lol! no clue. just wish i was. i am not the only one to feel it was really a great trip to Italy ... like u were there ... will they make it a movie?

Frances Mayes is a marvelous writer. She brings the essence of Italy to armchair travelers. I enjoyed reading her prose.However, this is mostly a reference book for travelers wanting to get off the beaten trail in Italy. If you were to go to these places, this book would be invaluable in finding terrific places to eat and unusual but wonderful places to visit. She takes her husband and grandson along for her trip to give a couple of other perspectives and cover other interests than her own.Five stars for the prose, three stars for lack of a story that Mayes usually does so well, splitting the middle with four stars.

Frances Mayes' writing transports me. It's impossible to read her work without realizing she's a poet. It's also impossible to read her work and not want to start planning your trip to Italy ASAP. I loved this book as much as I''ve loved ever other thing written by the amazing Ms. Mayes, and I've read every word. Thank You!

As a homeschooling family of 7, we've traveled all over the United States and I was very excited to get this book. While many of the destinations are solid, family friendly "life changers"...I was honestly shocked they had Birmingham Alabama listed. Do. Not. Go. Here. I recognize the historical significance this city holds for the Civil Rights era, but this is not a place for children. This city is congested, filthy, crime ridden, dreary and depressing---and it's suggested you go out walking around! Not only would most children not understand the significance of walking the bridge, it isn't safe to do so. Birmingham's addition to this book makes me question all the other destinations. Do additional research! (Also, this book has no pictures!)

Some destinations were well laid out...where to stay , interesting but little known things to see or do. However, so many lacked any valuable info and sort of pointless to include.

Great for getting destination ideas for family trips. In addition to map at the start of each chapter, wld be helpful to have an inset map on the destination’s page.

You'd think that a NatGeo publication would come with gorgeous pictures. Not so. Here is a book about 100 places to take your kids to and there is not one single photograph. It provides interesting but brief narratives on discrete places across the globe. Really discrete - like Gion in Kyoto. The text does provide adequate description of these places but an actual snapshot to go along with the text snapshots would have been ideal.

The author nearly lost me in the first paragraph when she wrote "She hurdled toward the table, ...". Unless the gymnast was jumping over obstacles in her way, I'm pretty sure she "hurtled" not "hurdled".I have some gripes with this book (it could have used better editing - to cut out some of the unnecessary wordiness and fix errors like the one mentioned above), but overall it's a pretty good book with lots of interesting information. Despite the title, It's not just about the evolution of scoring in gymnastics, The second half of the book is about training (US-focused) and the final chapter is about college gymnastics. I would recommend for any gymastics parent. So, I give it a 9.5 for content, maybe an 8.2 for presentation.My one other complaint was that the author sprinkled in a number of pop-culture references, presumably to seem "hip" and to make the reading less dry. But these won't age well, and for readers like me who are not up on the latest TV shows or whatever, they were mostly an annoyance.

Particularly the chapter about how the US has taken over not because the D+E code somehow innately favors their athletes or style of gymnastics, but because they put in years of hard work training and conditioning, and take care to develop their younger gymnasts so they don't have to rely on a few star athletes who have been around for eight years or more.More seriously, this is an interesting, well-written book that far outdoes the ghostwritten memoirs and children's how-tos forming the lion's share of the "nonfiction gymnastics book" genre these days. It reminds me in ways of some of the very detailed pre-Internet reference books printed in the 80s and early 90s that I found in my school library as a child, but updated to reflect the modern state of affairs. Even as a seasoned gymfan with a deep and detailed knowledge of the sport, I came across many facts and stories I did not know. It's incredibly well researched.There are some minor editing oversights (that's not what begging the question means) and the occasional esoteric vocabulary choice (naif? emend? reeeally?), and the author for some reason chooses to provide a voice to the embarrassingly biased and contemptuous views of insufferable artistry snob Elizabeth Booth, but these minor flaws are more than made up for by the strength of the remainder of the book. It's the best nonfiction gymnastics book that's come out in recent memory, and it's accessible to casual fans while still being useful to the die-hards (a trait I wish NBC coverage could share). Hopefully the timing of its release will help it and its author to gain the publicity and audience they very much deserve.

Great book for any gymnastics fan. Meyers went to great lengths to cover all sides of the story and her footnotes at the end show how well-researched the book is. While her pop-culture allusions might not stand the test of time, the story of the sport and the end of the era of the "10" definitely will. Any fan of gymnastics, Olympics, or sports will enjoy this book.

As another reviewer pointed out, this is the rare gymnastics book that isn't aimed at young kids, a memoir, or a sensationalized story. It's a book that treats gymnastics as a real sport.I'm mainly a men's gymnastics fan, but I learned a lot from this book about the women's system and the role the male gymnasts played in the end of the 10 (it's not what many people think).A very readable and entertaining book - buy it.

Great book. I've always liked gymnastics, but I'd only consider myself a casual fan. This book explained the history and current state of the scoring and the culture around the sport in just the right amount of detail.

As a gymnastics fan I've been reading Dvora Meyers' work on her blog and in various newspapers and online media outlets for a number of years. I consider myself very knowledgeable about the sport. When I ordered this book I had high hopes, but wasn't sure there'd be much new information for me. I was so pleasantly surprised. This is not just a book about the transition from the 10.0 to open-ended scoring. Rather, Meyers digs into the history of the sport to fully contextualize what both scoring systems mean and why the change became inevitable. She makes a convincing argument for why the new code serves the sport despite the popular refrain to 'bring back the 10' and tv commentators' inability to explain the new scoring to their every four year audiences.Ultimately this is an impeccably researched book that doesn't fall under the weight of its detail. Meyers has interviewed almost all the major players in the modern era of the sport, especially those in the US (the Karolyis are the notable expections who did not speak to her). What she leaned from those interviews and her visits to gyms is woven in a first-person narrative along with research from a variety of gymnastics and popular sport publications. The book moves quickly and technical detail is balanced with allusions to popular culture. Meyers manages to keep the book interesting to gymnerds and accessible to those with casual interest in the sport alike. Easily the best book I've read on the sport. Bravo!

Nowhere else have I been able to find a rigorous, complete and fully motivated development of the definition of a determinant (not online, not in other linear algebra textbooks of which i have 4 including the excellent text by David Lay et al as well as numerous other books). This book has equipped me to teach not only how to DO determinants and how to prove that determinants correlate with area, volume and hypervolume, but rather develops the determinant as the geometric concept of area/volume/hypervolume of a parallelepiped in n dimensions -- which also determines whether or not a nxn matrix can be inverted -- and from this all the basic properties of determinants become clear. Elsewhere the approach seems to be, "motivate" the determinant by discussing a 2x2 matrix and then define the matrix as the row or column expansion of minor submatrices -- proving from this seemingly arbitrary definition various matrix aspects which are much more naturally discussed by this book. SOME other books even point out that all the additive terms can be formed by permutations of columns to determine which factor is selected from each row of the matrix to calculate the determinant, but not really demonstrating WHY in a general sense. Although it is not easy in the sense that some of the proofs are subtle still they are quite well done, so I recommend the book for any math major, math professor, or (in my case) former math major teaching a precocious 7th grader who has already blown through algebra, trig and calculus.

I am not a math person. I bought the book to spark some math on a higher level. I had no idea what matrices etc are. The math is on such a high abstract level that it is way beyond my ability to grab any basics for understanding it. But I am keeping the book for now. I will go over it now and then. Something may garner meanings from checking it out.

In past semesters, the course required text had always been a ridiculously expensive book with many pictures and long, tedious explanations. This book is excellent at explaining with minimal detail yet still getting the point across. The only con I can think of is the small number of problems, leaving only the conceptual and harder problems. But even this could be a pro, helping the student to think around the concepts rather than repetition of busy work exercises. I would suggest practicing from another source the topics you find more difficult.

Trying to teach myself matrix algebra. Will have to take an on-line course. These math books are difficult to follow. Others who are smarter than me would appreciate it more.

Not a bad Math book. It sure doesn't weigh alot. Not taking this math before, it doesn't seem to hard to follow. The teacher recommends this book and states its better than the other books that he has used before. Answers to questions are in the back and the proofs are not really hard to follow. The price of the book was outstanding.

On my desk right now, books by: David C. Lay, Terry Lawson, Sheldon Axler, Klaus Jänich, Robert Valenza, and this one by Schneider and Barker. I tend to go back again and again here.I'm using this book as a supplement for the textbook in my class. Some of the books cited above don't quite fit the bill because they're so different from the linear algebra for engineering you so often see in classes. But this one is excellent for a matrix-heavy approach.This book is "bare bones", indeed, but it is very well written. Some might not be used to definitions, propositions, theorems and lemmas but in this case this makes it a whole lot easier for finding (and referencing) the important results. The notation is careful and formal, but the explanations are crystal clear. On the back cover it says it's geared towards students "outside the field of mathematics" but I think they say that because it avoids a purely algebraic approach (like in Valenza where e.g. Ker is defined in the context of group homomorphism). The approach is the one of matrixes, matrixes everywhere (row echelon algorithm, etc.) There are, however, no "modern" applications (such as networks, or ecology) as examples.Another reviewer complained about the difficulty in exercises. While you have "drill" ones, you do have more conceptual ones, but I think they're on par with the text. There are no pretty illustrations here, and you will see that you don't need them.In some other books, material might be presented in a wordy manner, but in this book, you just say "ah, so what so-and-so is saying is just Theorem number X.X.X in S&B."On the whole, this is an excellent acquisition for your undergraduate library. It is cheap and good. What more do you want?
